Here's a Christmas surprise for you all. Sony has sneakily added a message onto PlayStation 5 that should help quell confusion around whether you're playing the PS4 or PS5 version of a game. Up to now, the new console hasn't done a great job of letting you know whether you have the last-gen or new-gen version of a title installed, and it's all been a bit messy. However, a newly discovered pop-up message seems to address this.
Tidux shared the following on Twitter, showing the new message when he selects the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed Valhalla:
It would seem that, if you go to play a PS4 game on your new machine that also has a PS5 version available, you'll get the above prompt. It's an alert that encourages you to swap to the new-gen version of a game so you get the best experience. Not bad.
We've not seen this ourselves yet, but with lots of other people confirming its existence, it seems this is legit. Have you had this message pop up on your PS5? Tell us in the comments section below.

That's good! It wasn't too clear about the PS5 version upgrade of Borderlands 3 when i installed it the other week.
I had this maybe 3 weeks ago maybe longer when I had both cold wars installed, I guess not everyone knew
That's a great addition, although the first week had already taught me how to be careful about choosing the game version!
Seems like they are trying to do some damage control. Good start. Still gonna wait for a slimmer version. That damn console is massive, and buggy (like every new console) nevermind expensive and oh yeah, non existent for buyers haha.
@NYJetsfan123
You can't hate on a product you don't have 🤨
@NYJetsfan123 ?
Now if they can stop the console installing the PS4 version from the disc when you already have the PS5 game installed and also stop the hourly spinning of the drive, that'd be great!
And if it needs to be paid for does it take you to the ps store, or just not show the message?
@KPraj I would wager he has tried to get one thats why he is crying like a 5 year old. That or he is just a troll. Praise the ignore button.
@get2sammyb
Why the ? Everything I mentioned you guys put an article on. This article specifically refers to (or how I perceived it) the confusion when it comes to the purchasing of ps4 or ps5 version of games.
Are you just mad because the jets got a win and the giants lost to the browns?? Haha, only kidding!
@KPraj
Im not hating! I love PlayStation. Been gaming with PlayStation since the ps1 in the 90s. The only other console I own is a switch lite. Can't wait to get my PS5. Just don't think it's worth the price tag and "bugginess" to invest now.
Good, now put a big warning if people accidentally try to download ps4 version from psn.
@NYJetsfan123 damage control is making exuses for a problem in order to make it look less bad.
what sony did here is FIXING the problem not damage controling it.
@Panic_Attache THIS! BIG TIME
Good my and my boys were trash talking Ubisoft pretty bad the first weekend. I didn’t know until after reading on here I was playing the PS4 Version 🤦🏻♂️
@NYJetsfan123 What's buggy about it? Mine is perfectly fine.
Of course price is subjective, but I find it fair too though. One could even argue that the digital version is underpriced (since you have to spend money in PS store).
@NYJetsfan123 Ummm how is fixing a problem players had "damage control"? I Don't think you know how to use those words properly lol.
@NYJetsfan123 @NYJetsfan123 Ignore the fanboys . What you said is right . Hope you get your ps5 in the near future and enjoy it 😊
@skxnkwxlkr there’s been multiple report of bugs . My mate’s ps5 bricked because he put in rest mode . I’m pretty sure that can be considered a bug . Just because you personally haven’t encountered the bugs doesn’t mean they don’t exist lol
@NYJetsfan123 What damage control the only damage control i have seen this year is CP2077.
@Flaming_Kaiser This. PS5's OS is far from perfect but definitely doesn't need "damage control" (just a couple more patches )
Almost like Smart Delivery... 🤣
Nice update. What I cannot find are game demos from the store🤷
We now need some funky name for the storage solution because "I/O complex" it's not OK!! Spiderman loads a save game in 2 seconds but without a PR name we are doomed.
@TheLightSpirit funny how you complain about the store deals not loading up properly and then say you’ve not experienced any bugs lmao
the general UI on PS5 has been pretty stable for me, but downloading/updating games on PS5 has been massively buggy. the last destiny 2 update didn't download - just got stuck "calculating time remaining" for several hours, despite it being only 100mb or so. the only way to fix it was to delete the entire game, and re-download the latest full version from the store, which is 62gb — that's double digits hours for me on my connection - or would be, if it didn't randomly stop with a non-descript error, requiring a manual restart — but i usually download stuff that big when i'm asleep, so i wake up to find that instead of being almost finished, it stopped at 8% or something.. if i wasn't constantly monitoring it, it would probably take days to download. the same for spiderman remastered, the download kept stopping for no apparent reason. i had to re-install miles morales (from disk) 3 times, due to an update error - 1.03 just wouldn't not apply, even after downloading - i played the game for about 25 hours with pretty much no issues at all, other than the trying to get the damn thing installed.. no way in hell am i going to be paying money for digital games at present.
@Voltan I dont own a PS5 yet so i cant say my biggest thing i want too see is being able too backup my saves offline i find it such a cheap shot putting that behind a paywall..... ☹️
I still dont know why it lets you play the ps4 version really.
@JapaneseSonic I think you sent me your PSN id earlier but somehow that thread seems to be gone (the notifications take me to another one) so I can't find it
Anyway - mine's "theVoltan", feel free to add
@TheLightSpirit you are defo a fan boy for getting so defensive so that’s probably why you despise the term. https://www.thesixthaxis.com/2020/11/14/ps5-playstation-5-rest-mode-crash-bug-error-ce-108255-1/

@KPraj Of course you can if you don't like the look of it or don't fancy dealing with bug ridden launch hardware.
@TheLightSpirit All launch hardware is buggy. This year in particular has added to that problem. Just because you haven't had any issues doesn't mean that others haven't. And those people yet to buy new hardware are still able to read about the issues others have had.
@TheLightSpirit Yes of course I'm aware that manufacturing faults can occur at any point. Are you aware that these faults are much more likely to happen during a product launch window because the manufacturing process hasn't been tested through to the point of being in someone's home. I worked at a games retailer for many years and oversaw a number of hardware launches. I know for a fact that faulty machines were much more prevalent during the first 6 months of launch than at any other time during that platform's life (outside of hardware revisions). And that applies to all manufacturers by the way. It's for this reason I never buy a console from any platform holder at launch.
Thats better but why doesn't it just only install the PS5 version of a game in the first place? I got tired of removing PS4 discs every time I turned the console off as it would install the PS4 version as soon as it was turned on
@TheLightSpirit I bought one at launch and for the most part it was great, I had a few crashes but nothing too bad. For me there were some poor design choices such as the one above where it always seems to want to install the PS4 version of a game even though I have the PS5 version installed. Then the hard drive space which eats up extra storage with "other", which took up around 100gb for seemingly no reason, the lack of organisation for your games, the new library is a bit rubbish as it shows every game you've ever played and having to manually go and find your save files for download, oh and the Playstation store not showing any PS4 sales.
I got a Series S as well and that had none of those issues and is a much better user experience overall. That said I don't think either the PS5 or Series X/S are worth it at launch simply down to an overall lack of software for them
I haven’t seen this yet. I think it’s odd you can’t access free demos now on the ps5
@TheLightSpirit You're right. It is my choice. It's my choice to buy one when I believe that the manufacturing issues will have been ironed out. I don't know why you're so offended by that. I base my opinions on personal experience during the DS, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 launches. FYI, there aren't any firmware updates for badly made hardware.
Dearie me, first world problem if ever I saw one. lol
@Arugula
Thank you!
Love being attacked by the troglodytes.... How dare one have an opinion.... I got nothing negative to say about Sony, but you'd think I just insulted their mother reading some of these replies haha. Children will be children....
@TheLightSpirit
Nope. If I was talking out of my ass, alot of words would be censored....
@__jamiie so you don’t own a PS5 then? Fail to understand what contribution you could make to this discussion
@jdv95
Opinions vary
@TheLightSpirit I worked for Game.
@2cents Of course. Only PS5 owners can talk about PS5. If I plan to get one at a later date can I comment now or do I need to run my contribution past you first for approval? Cheer up mate.
@NYJetsfan123
I’ve managed to get my son one for Xmas and decided to set it up ready for him and free my Xmas day up a little. Ended up playing it for a couple hours while there were are school 😂
It was fantastic but where are these bugs your speaking of? I didn’t experience one issue it. It is huge though. Defo gonna trade my 4 pro in for a 5 a lot sooner than I expected now. I’ve personally nothing but praise for it after my few hours playing
@__jamiie
But you're taking the bugs out of context. In cost/benefit analysis how much are the bugs affecting your enjoyment of the console?
You don't have a console so you can only see the bad side and not the good that actual owners of the PS5 are experiencing.
How many PS5 do you think have been returned because owners aren't satisfied?
@TheLightSpirit same, been best launch console so far
@crazykcarter "IGN" - Pretty much.
I was going to ask @Quintumply why he used the word "WARN" in the article title rather than something less alarming, like "INFORMS" or "CONFIRMS," like the pop-up box actually says but the comments were already so far gone I decided against it.
But then you gave me an opening so why "warn"? Just seems like an unnecessary word to scare people. This is simply a question - which version do you want to play? - not warning - don't play this game or your system will brick. Oh well, 2020, we're all on edge I suppose. 🤷♀️
Edit: "ASKS" probably works best: "PS5 Now Asks You if You Want to Play the PS4 Version of a Cross-Gen Game"
@KPraj But there aren't any must have titles in my opinion. Any games that may interest me are also on PS4 so I'm not missing out on anything. I really don't know why you're so concerned with my reasons for not buying a PS5 at launch. It doesn't affect your enjoyment in the slightest. I don't buy consoles at launch because of issues that always happen when a new product is manufactured. Again, none of this stops you from loving it so crack on.
@__jamiie
It's not a case of me caring for your reasons but you are influencing others by spreading half truths. Calling it a buggy mess is not a real indication of how the console functions for anyone that has actually has one.
@KPraj I'm not influencing anyone by stating why I don't buy consoles at launch just as you're not influencing me by saying you do buy them at launch. I never called the PS5 a buggy mess so stop putting words in my mouth. I haven't bought an Xbox at launch for the very same reason. Launch consoles are at their most bug ridden for the first 6 months on sale. That's what I've experienced as a store manager at a games retailer throughout 5 hardware launches.
I've just purchased my first PS5 game, amplified version of Dirt 5, as it's in the sale.
When I went to download it, it offered me the choice of either version, PS4 or PS5; isn't this the case with every game? Or is it particular to Dirt 5 you're offered either version to download?
Just curious, if it's the former, who would knowingly download the PS4 version (on the PS5).
@Woogy if you have a PS4 disc that can be upgraded to the PS5 version, it will default to the PS4 version as that's what's on the disc. This was especially the case when the upgrade wasn't available on day 1.
Edit: also, as I've seen elsewhere, some people mention keeping both versions of a game that doesn't feature PS4 to PS5 cross-play online - like some of this year's sports games.
Cheers for that @Voltan.
That hadn't occurred to me as I've gone digital.
