Forget your hall-of-fame puzzle games like The Witness, because telling the difference between PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 titles may very well be next-gen’s greatest conundrum. First, we’ve got to sympathise with Sony a little bit here: this was never going to be an easy problem to solve. There are tons of titles on the PlayStation Store, and some of them now have PS5 and PS4 versions. All of these are handled differently: many have free upgrades, some don’t – it’s complicated. To make matters worse, you may own some releases on a physical disc.
Okay, with that caveat out of the way, clearly the Japanese giant has a bit of work to do here. It’s not a disaster by any stretch of the imagination, but it does take a bit of grey matter to figure out how it all works. So, allow us to explain: cross-buy titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which are available on both consoles, have a unified PS Store profile with the same key art and information. However, there’s a page for the PS5 version and a page for the PS4 version.
You can actually toggle between these. If you click on the ellipsis next to the Play button, you’ll see a link to the game page for the opposite version. So, in this example, we’ve selected the PS5 version of Planet Coaster: Console Edition, but we can jump to the PS4 version if we want to:
Another way of doing this, as demonstrated by Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, is to hover over the game’s icon and press Options > Game Version. In this case, we’ve clicked on the PS5 version, so we can switch to the hub area for the PS4 edition if we want to. You can have two copies of the same game installed on your console, which is obviously going to be massive for Trophy hunters:
The problem is that it’s taken us almost two weeks to figure all of this out, and we don’t think the device does a good job of denoting when you’re looking at a PS5 game and when you’re looking at a PS4 game. To be fair, the system does include additional text to identify PS4 software, but we reckon more prominent platform logos would make it clearer what you’re actually browsing.
All of this becomes a level more complicated when you insert a PS4 disc. Sony’s made the process mostly seamless, but we still reckon it could be better. So, when you pop in a Blu-ray for an upgradable game, its icon will appear on your main menu. You can copy that game and play it through backwards compatibility, or you can claim and download the free upgrade from the PS Store. The problem is, in our case with No Man’s Sky, it ended up downloading the PS5 version and then installing the PS4 copy anyway.
This isn’t end of the world stuff, it’s just a little less streamlined than we hoped it would be. It’s manageable, and we’ve mostly wrapped our head around the quirks, but we think some clearer visual identification could clean this up. Most notably, we’d add more prominent PS5 and PS4 logos to every game, just so it’s always abundantly clear what you’re looking at. Presumably, future firmware updates will help.

@AJDarkstar I honestly think they should put a PS5 or PS4 logo on all software. I understand why they haven't, but this console is going to be straddling two gens for much of its lifespan.
But yeah if they don't want to do that, I think a PS4 logo for BC games would do the job.
Is there any way of telling which version you have installed other than playing it? I'm not sure if you're referring to the store 100% or you mean installed games too. Sorry, it's late.
Sounds like a bit of a nightmare for those of us with OCD. But even in the absence of an update to resolve some, er, ambiguities I figure I'd still manage to adjust to the quirks.
surprise mechanics
This confused the hell out of me until I saw where to check the PS5 version on AC Valhalla but the game info still says PS4. Makes you second guess if you’re really playing the PS5 version
Glad I'm not the only one befuddled by the subtlety of the presentation. In no mans sky's case I think they want you to be able to still play in vr and hence include both versions. Took my tiny mind a while to figure that one out.
I think of it as an extension of the old store where searching for trails of Cold steel 3 returned no results, and searching for trails of Cold steel iii returned 3 pages of costume packs then tcs2 then the psp games, then the demo, then the actual game.
aaaannnd this is why I was in no hurry to buy this gen. Sonys hoping the gimmicks from the controller will make up gor the lack of visual improvements this gen.
@PossibLeigh The way to tell which version you have installed is to press "options" when you have highlighted the games icon, then select and enter "Game Version" just like the last image of this article (with Call of Duty). It will have the two versions available and the one installed will be ticked.
@get2sammyb @AJDarkstar I think they could just put "PlayStation 5" or "PlayStation 4" under the title of game. And I just looked, it turns out that they have put a "PS4" next to the PS4 game titles at the top of the screen.
For instance:
[Game icon] Dreams™ | PS4
But would be good if it was more obvious for all, before and after you buy and download.
Why not have a store filter for PS4 and PS5 titles as well?
@Ken_Kaniff from what I’ve heard the dualsense is anything but “gimmicks”
@Octane The store on the app has a section dedicated to PS5 game. I don't know if the store on the PS5 itself has the same.
@Octane They do have that, but cross-gen games still display oddly once you click into them.
I installed Miles Morales from a PS5 disc, then freaked out because it was displaying in my library as a PS4 game...with a weird lock symbol (presumably because I only own the PS5 version). It's super clunky, I really hope they fix it.
I think MS does a decent job with their X/S logo on games especially as most games are the same SKU and you get the 'version' for your platform.
I haven't really looked at the PS store - other than the PS+ games and Bugsnax was the only game that I really looked at that was on PS5.
I think that maybe the fact that Sony's logo this gen is very much like last gen adds to the confusion. You have clear logo's with MS that are clearly different from last gen and that helps. Call of Duty - which charges you more for cross gen has a clear banner stating cross gen version but the others are 'Xbox One' with 'Series X/S' logos or in the case of The Medium, Scorn etc just Series X/S logo so makes it really easy.
I haven't really spent much time with the PS store as I don't buy Digital by choice but I really don't find the 'new' store as easy to use. It seems odd to me that a game like AC: Valhalla has 2 pages for the same game. It would make much more sense to keep it to one page but a link in both PS4 and PS5 searches to take you to the 'SAME' page with information to say the game runs on both - enhanced on PS5 - much like an Enhanced for PS4 Pro. Maybe have a '4/5' logo to indicate its enhanced for PS5 as well. PS4 BC games only need a PS4 logo - much like XB360 games still have a 360 logo - even if they run on XB1 or Series consoles.
You only need 3 logo's really - PS4 (for just PS4 games), PS5 (for just PS5 games) and PS4/PS5 (for those games that get 'enhanced' on PS5 but also play on PS4). If it doesn't have both, then it means the game is specific to that console - whether the PS4 version runs via BC on PS5 or not - It only needs PS5 if it gets a 'free' update with that version.
It doesn't need to be more complicated than that. If it only says PS4, then its only going to be the PS4 version - no PS5 enhanced update (but may play on PS5 via BC). If it says just PS5, then its just PS5 - won't run on PS4 - If it has PS4/PS5 (or some combined new logo), it runs on PS4 but you get an enhanced PS5 version as well - Simple....
Games like CoD:BO does make things complicated by having a PS4 version and a PS4/PS5 version but maybe keep the PS4/5 version in the PS5 games with a banner on the PS4 page linking to the PS4/5 version with a clear statement to say this game is PS4 only or for the PS4/PS5 upgrade version, click this link...
@get2sammyb
Partially related question, maybe you can answer: is it possible to opt out or delete certain patches for games? I’m thinking especially of The Last Guardian, which runs at a locked 60fps from disc on PS5, but received a patch which then set a 30fps cap. If I could delete this patch, and similar ones in other games, that would be great.
@get2sammyb this is what a lot of people on Reddit been asking two of the same file to download different file sizes but one says ps4 and the other says nothing next to the title now obviously you assume its ps5 but to some people they aren't sure what to do so I agree with including the format next to each title to make it more simplistic.
I assume it's the PS5 version by default? And therefore a non-issue
@Gravity_Bear Thanks for that. Totally agree that's ridiculous!
@jmac1686 Waiting on my ps5 to arrive 19th. Currently playing Valhalla on my base ps4. You mind elaborating on upgrading to the ps5 version of valhalla and the issues you had?
@Ken_Kaniff If you play on a moderate to high end PC, then I agree with your sentiment. For console-only gamers, the graphical improvements are pretty huge.
@get2sammyb so I have disc versions with the ps5 logo on them ,is it just a case of putting them in or will I have to select an option or will it download both versions ?
@vapidwolf You can just put those in and you'll be good to go!
This really made for the worst day one experience. The games I was looking forward to the most have been delayed to 2021, but I was fortunate enough to have Borderlands 3 and No Mans Sky get free upgrades. Then all of a sudden Borderlands 3 (Super Deluxe) is installing the PS4 version, plus updates. And trying to queue the DLC for the PS5 version queued both platforms' DLC. Deleting the PS4 data just means the console wants to install every time it gets turned on, and the disc drive ain't all that quiet. At all.
Sony really needs to update a version of their own Smart Delivery. The PlayStation UI is beautiful, and it even sounds great, but these issues have cause a chain reaction of additional frustrations around the UI, and the store front, and how the console handles things.
At one point yesterday I visited the home screen while playing the game (Bl3), and then when I tried to go back to the game, it started the other version of the game. Not to mention that the reason that happened was because you can't just use the PS button to quickly return, and have to navigate your way back to it. It's very ***** right now, like the most beautiful turd.
To make things simple why not put on the case it loads quicker and looks shiner job done 👌
If you can create folder in ps5 as same as in ps4, than make bunch of folders and sort all your icons into them. Then, when something you newly install will pop all new icons, check them and move to appropriate folders. ☺️
This is the only way how I managed to live with PS4 system menu. Never seen bigger UI chaos since PS4 and still fight with it sometimes. ... golden PS3 xbm...
@thefourfoldroot No, but on disk you can reinstall the game without internet on to play 1.00 unpatched. You can try this method to get 1.00 digital titles but I can't guarantee it'll work although it did work for me last month. https://forum.psnprofiles.com/topic/67810-guide-how-to-get-100-digital-games/
And when the download stops with an error code, quickly start it then pause it. And reset your wifi connection on ps4 without the proxy.
My Fred Meyer accidentally ordered about five dozen copies of Call of Duty for PS4 and none for PS5. The manager was floored when she realized. Oh well it happens 🤷
@djlard Just like when the PS4 first came out, there are no folders on the PS5. So they're making the same mistake all over again.
It's frustrating, at least initially, that the PS5 versions of game don't SAY they're the PS5 version in the menu or anywhere - is just that they don't say they're the PS4 version, so that means they're the PS5 version. I find that awkward right now, where so much of my content is still PS4 games, and for a few (Borderlands 3) where I have both installed and need to keep both installed (until they figure out how to properly convert saves so you get all your characters instead of only one). I expect that will get better, but some clearer iconography would help.
I've always wondered if putting a ps4 game(upgradeable, ac:valhalla) into a ps5, would give you the "nextgen" or BC version w/upgrades. But if it's downloading both copies, ps4/5, that could be an issue with data caps and ssd space.
@NEStalgia I know what you mean sometimes its horrible too find something.
Gotta say, it makes you wonder if the graphical improvements with PS5 are as significant as we think. How much is placebo and how much is a substantial change? If you can feasibly play through a PS4 game on PS5 and think all along that it's PS5, what does that say?
