Cyberpunk 2077 running on a base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is what everyone wanted to see in the lead up to the gigantic RPG's release, and now that the day is here, boy have the floodgates opened. While we did encounter some of these issues in our own analysis of CD Projekt Red's latest title on a PS4, social media has been documenting some truly nightmarish clips of terrible performance on last-gen systems as well as lots and lots of bugs and glitches. It's a sorry sight for one of the year's most anticipated games, but be sure to check out the results of our own investigation into the base PS4 version. We didn't find it to be quite so bad.
Over on Eurogamer, screenshots from what we presume is an upcoming Digital Foundry analysis have been shared showing the PS4 version running at 30 frames-per-second, but then also at 22, 17, and even 15. There is absolutely no denying it — that's pretty atrocious. You can start to get an idea of what that looks like in the following Twitter clips.
And then there are the memes, which were always going to happen. This is the internet, so these will obviously be run into the ground before too long. Still, they're pretty funny as Cyberpunk 2077 hits store shelves.

Have you encountered these issues yourself or suffering from generally poor performance on a base PS4, or maybe even PS4 Pro? Please post your findings in the comments below.

Top user is a well known troll, don't see why we're seeing his tweets here.
This is a next gen game running on proper ancient tech that was outdated before it came out, people should be thankful it works! If you don't like it just wait till you get a PS5.
Besides CDPR are great at bug fixes, in a few months this should be much better.
@DonJorginho 100% agree. Should not be given the time of day.
@DonJorginho Are they? I can't say I've ever heard of them before.
This is why not providing console review code and crazy embargo rules should be a red flag.
Precisely why I'm waiting for the PS5 upgrade.. I have plenty to keep me going until they've ironed it all out!
The GTA mod tweets gave me a good chuckle.
I was watching a streamer play a little bit of the PC version last night. Saw a small handful of comical glitches i.e. weapon pickup animation playing while holding a character, NPCs glitching through lockers destroying everything in their path, no lip syncing during conversations.
Nothing game breaking but stuff that makes you laugh at how goofy it is.
I don’t agree with people who say, you want a good version, buy a pc or next-gen system.
This game was marketed as a PS4 and Xboxone game all these years leading up to this point, bare minimum, it should be a decent experience on these systems.
FYI, I own a PS5.
Maybe they wanted to delay it again but couldn't handle any more death threats.
I got 5 crash on ps5. So far 15 hours playtime. But the auto save helps a lot! Didn't lose progress.. So far
@DonJorginho it was never a next gen game. This has been in development for ps4 and xboxone before ps5 and series x were even announced. The problem here is that the game was to ambitious from the start. As you said the tech it was made for is old and isn't fully up to what they want it to do.
Wait could you preorder this game from 2016? I hadn't even heard of this game until this year.
People were saying we would never see a miracle switch port of this like Switcher.
Well it looks like we can play something that looks like one in the end!
This is the game, THE game, were Sony and MS must have been having discussions of splitting their install base between base and "Enhanced" last gen systems.
From everything I'm reading it seems like these games are good enough, for all you day 1 pay to be beta testers anyway, on the enhanced consoles and it's just the old base consoles where things become obviously screwy. Which is why Nintendo made a couple of games "New 3DS" exclusives. Hyrule Warriors probably should have been as well.
But Sony and MS are keeping their word, so this is what you get.

Like I said yesterday in the forums regarding this
"It's still not the best look and a poor showing that the disc version of it that had gone "gold" was really not in the best of states."
There was a digital foundry video yesterday and with a proper beefy pc rig it seems to be doing some absolutely fantastic stuff (To them CDPR have undersold how good it looks!)
Here's hoping it's fixed up for the base PS4/Xbox one consoles for the many people on here who've been itching to play it as it's something I look forward to giving a go myself.
Eventually.
The proper PS5 version that is... It won't be the top of the line PC experience but I'll have as little compromise as I can thanks!
Oh, and I don't know why people are surprised about this. I'm currently about 130 hours into TW3 Complete edition and there are similar issues. Not as bad as any of these, but my horse got wonky at times for sure, and you can't blame power for that on a 3 year old game.

It's a little hard to tell from the angle in that last pic but Geralt is basically horizontal to the ground. He got on the vertical horse in the first 2 pics and just sat straight out horizontal to the ground. 😂
I’ve seen a fair amount of pop-in, noticeable shifts in LOD assets on buildings and some frame rates dips whilst driving on fairly empty roads. I’ve also come across a few bugs and glitches such as weapons floating in mid-air, tutorial windows not disappearing and NPCs with half their backside inside a sofa.
I’m playing on PS5 and still enjoying it.
Looks like a Ubisoft game judging by the second clip
I think they need to give a decent estimate on when the PS5 version comes out
Not had any bugs yet on pc but what I've played its a 7 for me,has too be one of the most lifeless and empty open world games I've played. The story and characters aren't really doing anything for me as well
Glad i cancelled my Xbox 1 pre-order. I'll wait for a sale before i pick this up
'No you're breathtaking'.
Haha fair play the jurassic park one got me. Im sure when fully patched the game will be a true delight. I will definitely pick it up. I just want that PS5 release date!
The thing is that if this were ANY other company not named CDPR the backlash would be insane.
This is not a good look at all. CDPR has been talking out of both sides of their mouths with all of the hype up to this game. From crunch culture, to the game "going gold" only to need another 43 gb patch, to the review codes and embargos being insane. I saw a reviewer say that they were not allowed to use their own footage for the review and was required to use CDPR "b-roll" they loved the game apparently but couldn't put out a review because they were prevented from using their own footage.
This is not a good look at all. I WANT the game, and I have a PS5 so I am not worried about the hitches shown here, but given everything that has happened ill wait for a used copy and get the free ps5 upgrade.
I'm not going to actively support cdpr here.
That Jurassic park one is good 🤣
I love this. Everyone praising CDPR and this game day after day after day...and I knew the hype was too big...now this is hilarious!
Honestly the hype was too much. Cyberpunk was never going to match all of the hype. At the end of day devs are human beings and AI, affordable compute power, etc still has a long way to go to enable fully immersive games imo. I think Cyberpunk marketing team should have done something to keep hype under moderation if they wanted to maintain their golden boy status among gamers (I'm no marketing guru though). I think it will be a great game but not head and shoulders above the rest this gen. And that is fine. Well at least on ps5.
Not surprised. That's why I'm waiting till I can find a PS5.
My biggest issues is the constant blurry screen what feels like low resolution and the constant pop in. Gameplay wise its fantastic but visually its a mess on base PS4 and CDPR really deserve the backlash because they knew it was bad hence why they refused to show base versions off. I'm enjoying because the gameplay is good but i really hope they can improve things. Honestly The Witcher 3 looks and performs better as does many of the other big hitters this year.
Yeah a lot of this footage is from version 1.00, people playing before upfldating, what do they expect, always install latest updates before trying a game, yeah there is still a few issues but 100% guranteed that CDPRvwill keep updating it until it's better.
@torne terrible attitude to have, I'm sorry but it is, used copies are a plague on gaming and a big part of why there is so many toxic practices like micro transactions these days. CDPR will polish this game on every system they just need time and patience, expecting a game this ambitious, to be perfect day one is just unrealistic, huge games like this are virtually impossible to be problem free across multiple systems, a game like this which will receive constant support for a long time, deserves to be paid for, used games give developers nothing, every time anyone buys a used game, they are helping publishers to decide to include monetisation in future games.
@WallyWest I wouldn't have any judgments against them for creating this as a next gen game, but I have some because of their choice to release something like this on base last gen consoles.
@MisterWhen There’s leaps and then there’s your comment. You’re on a hiding to nothing trying to convince PS players to abandon used games considering the PS4 supported them day 1 and Xbox One didn’t, leading to a massive outcry.
It's better to buy the game maybe 1-2 months later I think. Also this game should not have ps4 version at launch, cdp should focus on pc and next-gen only at first, and then downport it for old-gen a few month later.
Edit: Yeah, I think I'll wait for the ps5 version a couple of months later, I heard it's really buggy on console.
@MisterWhen to be clear you are welcome to not like my stance on this.
However that being said i am also entitled to my own opinion and choices.
I do not like how two faces cdpr were regarding crunch culture. The publicly came out and stood against it and then FORMALLY enforced it on their employees. That's strike one
Strike 2 was when the game was deemed ready enough to go gold and then a week later they needed to delay it to prepare for their 43 gb patch. If the game needs to be delayed after going gold then it isn't gold
Strike 3 was their review practices. Telling reviewers and members of the community that they could only use b roll.footage from their trailers and only review on pc is ridiculous. The console versions were hidden until launch. This shows that cdpr knew the game wasn't ready. B roll footage is polished footage from a controlled environment that just wasn't used in a trailer. This is not indicative of being honest.
I buy 98% of my games new. I believe in supporting developers. I have almost 300 digital games across ps4 and ps5 with maybe 20 physical all of which were purchased new. Forgive me if I decide to take a hard stance against a developer who has shown that they are not prepared for this launch and that they don't actually practice what they preach.
TLDR honestly I don't care if my stance is unpopular its my stance and I am allowed to take it.
For everyone saying that this is a next-gen game. No it isn’t.
It was introduced as a PS4/Xbox One game, developed as a PS4/Xbox One and even in 2018 and since, further confirmed as a PS4/Xbox One first game.
If it was a next-gen game, it would have released as a native PS5/XSS/X title, simple as.
Stop defending them just because it CD Project. You wouldn’t defend Ubisoft, infact you probably slated them for it back with Watch Dogs 1.
The fact is, the game should have been cancelled for PS4/Xbox One. And development proceeded for next-gen. End of discussion
@nessisonett it's up to everybody's morals if they want to buy used, if that's all they can afford that's fine but if they can afford to actually support the gaming industry they should, that's all I mean. Not giving developers a single penny when you buy used, only hurts the Industry it's just fact.
@nessisonett thank you for having a reasonable outlook on this.
@torne ok that's fair enough if I'm honest, just a bit against used games, if a person can afford to support a Dev and the industry they should, again just my opinion, you're welcome to yours.
@MisterWhen no it can also actually make the industry better. Everyone keeps saying vote with your wallet. Thats what I am doing. I want to play the game but I am not willing to support these practices.
In my instance the compromise is to vote with my wallet and buy used. Can I afford to buy it? Yes I am sitting on $150 in psn credit at the moment. Will I buy it new? No for the reasons outlined above.
Edit: posted this before I saw your response.
The people who are lamenting how unfinished this game is are some of the same people who were furious that the game got delayed.
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Yeah, Gamers™ have spent this entire generation hating on Bethesda, EA and Ubisoft for releasing barely complete games riddled with bugs. Then Cyberpunk comes out and it’s all going to be fixed and we should just wait? It’s nonsense for this to have gone gold in this state after multiple delays and horrid working conditions. You know what’s the most ironic part? Today’s World Human Rights Day.
@BalsBigBrother That is how Microsoft is doing it, there is already Demon Souls as a next gen exclusive.
I still don't get as to why is it difficult to release a game without any bugs/glitches?
These companies spend millions in making these games and yet for some unknown reason, they cannot take every bug/glitch out of these games.
You had to go with the headline Cybercrash. But in all seriousness its a mess I gave up playing it after 6 crashes.
Very expected. You always get these big games that saddle a generation shift, where it comes out on current gen but is really, REALLY meant to be next-gen. I expect Elder Scrolls IV to be in this situation next-gen, where you really need the NEXT systems to play it properly.
@LiamCroft He is a troll but still its legitimate footage of PS4 gameplay. But he didn't update the game. From my experience I have had 6 crashes on PS5 and gave up trying to play it.
I hate to say it but i can't see it improving outside a complete overhaul, bugs sure will be fixed and they may even improve frame rate and reduce pop in but i think visually this is what we're stuck with on base PS4. There's no defence here as CDPR knew this and kept quiet as well mislead people about a game changing patch what lets face it hasn't done much. The fact they made sure reviews are PC only and not allow own footage is terrible, between all this and crunch they have gone right down in my books. Again i like the game, the gameplay is great and i bet on PC and PS5 its amazing but it doesn't change the fact the console most will play it on have been screwed over and mislead. If they were more up front i could forgive, Ubi showed off Immortals on Switch prior to release so players knew what it would look like but CDPR the "pro comsumer" didn't bother with base PS4 players.
Never preorder games!
My version says its 1.02 and I looked it up and it says its the latest pre launch patch and its very muddy and textures popping in and out, and npc's look like theyre from a ps2 game. I've been riding the hype train for this game for a long time. I stayed up till midnight just to play soon as its ready. 3 hours in I was standing in V's apartment and opened the window shutters to look outside, and realized the graphics pale in comparison to Deus Ex, Alien Isolation, ect. I can honestly say this isn't just baseless hate because of the direction of a game like the way TLOU2 was received. I'm playing on a ps4 pro, and people keep saying the games suppose to be muddy and look like its a GTA game from 2010. Its not.
As I’ve mentioned before, The Witcher 3 at launch was legitimately one of the buggiest gaming experiences I’ve ever had and I can’t deny that it just did not ruin the game for me. Obviously I’m not as bothered by glitches and open world jank as some people here but the consistent hard crashes are not cool at all and need to be addressed ASAP. CDPR furiously worked to ‘fix’ The Witcher 3 and I expect nothing different here. Can’t wait to jump in tonight!
8hr session on PS4. 3 or 4 crashes. Couple of mission bugs. Stealth VR training 2 and finding the cyber psycho lt mower ( she glitched and stuck on stairs) reloaded last save and all good. Gameplay is marvellous. Will look stunning at high resolution.
Maybe they should have developed Cyberpunk as a PC title initially and then worked on the console ports afterwards. These shoddy console ports are going to damage the reputation of the developer and the franchise. I think the new Baldur's Gate game is coming out on PC first and then ported. These companies need to learn their limits.
@Jacko11 I appreciate you saying this. People will never stop kissing ass because these corporations are part of their identities.
god that's bad
@torne Nintendo would be that other company and their games don’t even look or barely look HD, I remember how BotW had frame rate issues and bugs and they also get away selling a Pokémon game that looks like a PS2 game for $90 any other company would get destroyed for that
The physical box experience is great though, I paid 53€ and there’s a little booklet and a map and some stickers...you’d think this would be a 99€ special edition version but nope, you can tell they care when they made this game. It even has two blu-rays so you can play the game without internet connection (ok you’ll need to accept the bugs in that case) but modern warfare didn’t even bother with that!
@DonJorginho well... No... It IS a current gen (ps4) game. Its not a ps5 game.
Its inexcusable.
@GKO900 absolutely.
Nintendo, ubisoft, EA, Sony, Activision, and Microsoft would all crucified for this type of release.
Hell halo infinite was just showing gameplay and look what happened there.
The only reason this is any different is because all of the above listed names are big corporations and because CDPR is just an indy developer that self publishes so they clearly aren't out for people money and have everyone's best interest in mind.
Hey remember that time that the CEO of CDPR came out and said "crunch isn't that bad" and immediately needed to issue an apology? They clearly have everyone's best interest in mind...
I wish I could post my ps4 screenshots on here, literally npcs and cars popping in and out and half the npcs mouths don't even move.
@Gmork___ it's a next gen title running on PS4 and XB1 as if it wasn't there people would cry and have temper tantrums.
This is the most ambitious open world yet.
@Gmork___ They would have known that a new generation of console was not too far out, and probably planned accordingly. I doubt they planned all of this as a PS4 game and then just update it for the PS5. You and all others claiming that it is a PS4 game have no proof to back up what you are saying. It having been in development during the PS4 life cycle is not proof that it was developed for PS4.
I don't doubt that a lot of work was put into the PS4 version because the release date would be at a time where the majority of players are on the old generation, and the next gen versions of the game would take back seat to the market.
@DonJorginho @JoshuaTChandler
What are you guys on? Lol.
How much more proof do you need to realize it is IN FACT a last gen game than the fact it RELEASED on ps4 and NOT ps5, thats just a backwards compatible version on ps5.
It is on ps4 NOT ps5, how dont you get that? Yes its an insanely ambitious game etc but that doesn't make it a next gen game. Should it have solely been a next gen game, ABSOLUTELY, but it was in development for yeeeeaaars as a last gen game and on its release was ONLY released on last gen consoles.
Im sorry i dont mean to offend you guys but holy moly
@Gmork___ Again you are assuming that because it was in development during the last console gen, and because it released on the PS4 without a next gen version ready, means that it was made for the last gen. Instead of understanding what I just told you, and seeing that it would make sense for them to have the PS4 version ready faster because there is something like 90 million PS4 players still. What you are using as the base of your proof is not a solid fact, but an assumption with basic "evidence".
4K was already becoming very popular and the use of the SSD is not a surprise. Development teams could have easily foreseen where the next gen would benchmark, and plan accordingly. Plus the PC version is already ready and our consoles will underperform compared to them, meaning the more powerful version is already formed, and there not being a PS5 version is for other reasons then the game not having been built for next gen.
The fact that it is running so poorly on the last gen consoles gives more credit to it being for next gen. GTA has trouble running smoothly on old gen, and your thinking is that CDPR designed an open world game with more detail then a game that clearly has issues with performance. I don't get paid to concept games but I can see that as a big problem, and someone who is making money doing so, would have easily known that their game would perform below acceptable standards.
Is there anyone, I mean anyone at all that's surprised by this?
CDPR has had a good name so far, but they've tarnished it so badly. Years of hype. Then t he delays, then they stamped the discs with a product they knew was broken and then delayed after that to rush-fix it in a patch. And this is what they have.
People keep saying "but it's clearly a next gen game running on old hardware." It was a "next gen game" when they revealed it....during the PS3. The entire development was done around the PS4/X1, supposedly, and they were supposed to launch merely on the first day of the new consoles. Originally they were supposed to have launched a while before the new consoles even launched. They haven't even made the next-gen console version yet. That'll be out "sometime" in 2021.
I get it, the reality remains CDPR and Bethesda don't actually make console games at all, they make PC games for bleeding edge hardware and then shoehorn it onto consoles. TotL PCs 6 years ago could run the game so they figured by the time it launched, midrange PCs could run it, and the PS4/X1 port can be glued together to be serviceable. But it really makes you wonder what they've been doing for 7+ years targeting a generation of consoles the release product clearly doesn't actually run on. I'm sure the game design is great - on PC. MAYBE on PS5/XSXS when it finally launches there. But it's really a shame they were working on this game for an entire generation but didn't seem to care that the game they built doesn't properly run on two of the three target platforms of most of it's development.
@Mega-Gazz This. Imagine walking into a store to buy...I don't know, a sewing machine. They have a sign telling you you can buy it and what features it has. You ask if you can see it. "No". Can you watch a video of it? "No." Can you see a picture of what it looks like "No, but you can see a picture of a different sewing machine." You find someone from the stock room who saw it and ask if they can describe it to you. "No, we're not allowed to do that, but we can tell you about a different model of sewing machine." But you can pay up front and they'll deliver it to you outside. No refunds. All sales final.
Now most people would probably think this is sketchy, and not choose to just spend $500 on the sewing machine they can't see and nobody can talk about before buying it as a non-refundable purchase.
But video games? You can't see it, you can't show it, you can't talk about it. Any and all sight of it is forbidden. Take a look at this other version of the game instead. And 8M people fork over the cash.
@torne "because CDPR is just an indy "
Aren't they partly owned by the Polish government?
As the saying goes....good enough for government work....
@DonJorginho watchdogs legions runs great and looks great if u think this garbage is acceptable than ur a moron end of.
@Bobskie77 If you think Watch Dogs Legion compares to Cyberpunk then you're the biggest moron.
Whatever this game is so out of tune and broken. If u think this game is acceptable than jokes on u. Go wait a year until its fixed. Also its not the biggest game ever to release ac valhala is bigger than it and runs ten times better.
@DonJorginho even fallout 4 looks better yet ran like dog *****. Keep ur hype up. Legions ***** all over cyberpunk. And atleast works on day one. And yet I also think legions ain't the best game to play but it looks great runs great and again shows what a bigger studio like ubisoft can do compared to CDPR.
@Bobskie77 you're true when you talk about it running better, but Ubisoft are about 4 times the size of staff compared to CDPR and is a smaller sized project. Night City is the best open world ever seen in terms of pure density and verticality.
Legion as a game is average compared to Cyberpunk, Watch Dogs 2 was much better, I'd say the real gem of this year for Ubisoft was AC Valhalla, now that game was great.
Fallout 4 ran like ***** due to Bethesda being the kings of bugs, and if CDPR keep going this way they'll take the crown.
CDPR shouldn't have released the game this broken, they were shady with their marketing processes and should offer refunds to PS4 and XB1 users, but I think the game is so good and for me personally has ran smoothly on my PS5, only one soft crash and a few minor funny bugs in 7 hours of play.
My guy is bald everytime I look in the mirror😐...... I did not make him look this way.
@Boucho11 totally agree bud, I'm not playing it until they do, it looks like a ps3 game atm (but on the plus side it does run smooth framerate wise on ps5)
