Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered sounds like a pretty significant upgrade on the original PS4 release, boasting 60 frames-per-second and numerous graphical enhancements. However, developer Insomniac Games has confirmed that you won't be able to carry your save data from the PS4 game over to the PS5 remaster.
This is probably because Marvel's Spider-Man: Remastered is being treated as a new title, complete with a new set of Trophies.

Guess this settles the Upgrade not being free for PS4 Users debate then.
Hopefully they announce it for a standalone reasonable price around January time.
Yay! More drone challenges!!
I've very forgiving of Sony, but this is unacceptable. It doesn't affect me, I've got the Plat, but how can they not figure this out? Microsoft is running circles around them with backwards compatibility. I can't wait to swing around as Miles.
@DonJorginho
All cross gen games get free upgrade according to Jim Ryan
“ The PS5 versions of those games are built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set, and we have an upgrade path for PS4 users to get the PS5 versions for free.”
So, if you get the remastered version and MM game on PS4 you can upgrade to the PS5 version free of charge.
Of course, if you get the old Spider-man game, which is a completely different SKU and can be picked up for peanuts secondhand, you won’t get the new SKU (remaster) free on PS5.
Honestly bummed Spider-Man isn't getting the PS4-PS5 upgrade treatment
It's largely going to be the same game graphical enhancements and added trophies be damned
@thefourfoldroot I find it hard to believe anything Jim Ryan says. The guys been a disaster since he took over.
This really needs to be released at a reasonable price. If you think I’m paying £60-70 for a game I’ve already finished on PS4 then you’re out of your mind!
I'm not buying the game again, it's only a couple of years old. The PS4 original should work just fine on PS5. Then Miles Morale will be more than enough to tide me over until the next full game.
This is all a bit silly. Why couldn’t they have just had this as the PS5 upgrade of the original? Sony really have been talking in circles.
@Bdbrady this is NOT backwards compatibility. This is a remaster. Developers had to do a lot of work to change assets out and engine work to take advantage of the ps5. Not the same thing at all.
I’m so sick of the entitled attitude of gamers these days.
Edit: I hope you put the same energy into disparaging cinematic remasters 🤦♂️🙄
Hol' up a minute!
So it's only your save that cannot carry over?
But am I right in thinking it doesn't rule out getting the upgrade for free in general..?
If the upgrade is free, but my save is gone, annoying yes, but as I 100% platinumed it already, i'm fine playing again from scratch.
@Fenbops
Yet ignoring the only facts we have and presuming the opposite get us nowhere. That is Sony’s stated position and it would be suicidal to break that commitment (whatever we might think about Jim Ryan).
Anyway, I was just happy to see anyone take over from John Kodera, who was in charge during Sony’s disastrous and immoral censorship policy regression. Still holding out vague hope something might change.
@Perryg92 Don't get your hopes up. You probably have to buy it again if you want the upgrade.
@Perryg92
Upgrade from one remastered edition to the other is confirmed free. I read this as meaning that old Spider-man saves from the original SKU ;not the remaster) wouldn’t carry over but, perhaps the way saves are on the PS4 and ps5 is different and they won’t work. This article isn’t clear.
@Bdbrady It doesn't really matter. The Wii U and XB1 had BC, the PS4 and Switch didn't. The PS4 doubled the sales of the XB1 and sold like 9 times what the Wii U did. The Switch came out about 3 years after the XB1 and has already outsold it by millions. BC is a kind of political thing where you appear to score PR points online but it doesn't really matter in reality. We could've had the same discussion in 2013 in how XB1 and Wii U are running rings around Sony in terms of BC and I've just described how that turned out.
Would I like to be able to play PS1-3 games on PS5? Sure. But it makes no different to almost everyone, as this gen shows. Even to me, I'd maybe play one PS3 game for every 50 PS5 games - and I still have a PS3 anyway. That said, it would've been nice to at least have PS1 and 2 BC, not because many would ever use it but just to stop the console wars posturing.
Should be cross save. This is another miss step
I lost my Spider-Man completion save file anyways, so if I ever return to the game, I'd have to start over regardless.
Really, I would probably only return if I got a free upgrade to a PS5 version - or I am in a lull, if not. Nothing against the game, but having to redo the entire game plus all the extras to get back to where I was just doesn't sound appealing right now.
I won't buy the Remastered.
It is a shame Insomniac couldn't (won't?) get cross-saving to work; especially since Microsoft has had this figure out for a while - I guess that's one benefit to Microsoft having it's game on PC's and sharing progress/achievements.
@MarcG420 Normally I'd be fine with this but I'd vastly prefer if either they waited a few years until Spider-Man was actually in desperate need of a proper remaster, or they gave the remaster its own seperate release physically and digitally like a lot of other remasters and re-releases do.
Locking it behind a more expensive edition of another game does increase incentive but it also feels like such a cheap attempt to drive the sales of another edition of an existing title since it doesn't look like there are plans for a standalone release for the remaster yet. Especially since the OG game is also already backwards compatible and isn't even that old.
I long for the days of cross saving across systems as industry standard just like cross play is becoming.
I can play Final Fantasy 14 on PS4 then move to PC and play the exact same game, just depending on if I want to sit on the sofa or at the desk.
If I could do this between my FF15 saves or my Horizon Zero Dawn save it would make me purchase the games twice.
I discovered this week Destiny 2 doesn’t support that. So I’ve got to stick on PC or transfer one character over or something and it’s a hassle so I haven’t bothered and stuck at the desk, which, when working from home at that same desk all day is much less desirable.
@Kienda I started Destiny 2 late, but it does have cross-progression, but it if you have multiple plays going before you link services together, you have to pick one as the main and it overwrites the rest when you link your accounts.
I didn't have any characters, so it didn't matter - I just linked all my accounts together and I share the same character across platforms.
Good news for me. I'm happy i get to plat this game again. Expecting a free remaster on a 2 year old game is pretty unrealistic.
I'd have started it again anyway so thats no problem, I'll probably pick up the special edition to get both games on PS5 as it was a lot of fun and I want to see how good it looks on next gen
@GamingFan4Lyf oh really? Thanks for letting me know.
I think I read it as just allowing me to use the same character on both but that my progression wouldn’t be carried over from one to the other when I switched platforms. If it does, then that is awesome.
@Matroska I agree with you that BC isn't as big of a deal. It isn't for me, and it isn't for most gamers. However, I see the saves carrying over as part of the same technology. And, while I personally don't care, them not being able to figure out saves carrying over is unbelievable. Have a good day.
@Kienda You have to go to the website, log-in and link your various accounts in your profile.
Well the PS5 version has a separate trophy list with new trophies, so it makes sense.
I have a feeling if Sony start doing next gen remasters (GoW, TLoU2, GoT, etc) they won't ve giving free upgrades....
@MarcG420 you missed my point. Making the saves compatible with the PS4 version is similar to (and should be easier than) BC. Placing your character at the same point in the story, with the same abilities unlocked, in this remastered, but structurally the same, world shouldn't be a heavy lift. Yeah frame rate, loads, assets, are all changed. I don't think it should be free (your assumption), but I do think bringing a save forward should be a feature for a launch game. It's another negative news beat for them, which feels unnecessary.
I love remakes and remasters--I'm all for them. No need to make assumptions and get aggressively defensive. Have a good day.
I already platinum the first game, I'm fine with replaying it with visuals upgrade and getting the platinum again. This time I won't spend my coins for more costume, I'll upgrade peter powers first for platinum it on the first try 😃
@Stevethejedi Drone challenge are annoying, but the taskmaster challange is more stressful for me because the amount of coins that we get depends on our performance.
Huh, I was honestly hoping to pick up where I left off at the end and play the DLC on PS5. No big deal, but I'm not sure I'll platinum it again. We'll see.
Nope. I've been through it twice, not starting from scratch for visual upgrades.
My question is, if I play my Spider-man game or any of my ps4 games for that matter, will I at least get the ps4 pro upgrade? Because I would be satisfied with that having not played any of my games in 4k on my new 4k tv. Anyone know the answer here?
@Dange if u buy the ultimate edition spiderman miles on ps5 u get spiderman remastered free. Also now miles is on ps4 version ultimate edition might be same as it has free upgrade to ps5 could be same with spiderman ps4 remastered
It doesn't seem to have a consumer backlash, to be honest I'm disappointed as I have the base game unopened that I can play on ps4 but hoped if I bought the season pass, it would trigger an upgrade. Microsoft have definitely done a better job of handling the smart delivery thing.
Why would I want my PS4 save I want a fresh trophy list & to play it again from start to finish
Oh God I can't be bothered to do the plat again, as much as I enjoyed the game
@mvhess any game you have that takes advantage of ps4 pro you will get free.
They are just trying to justify why we won't get the ps5 upgrade for free. Oh well, I played it enough so I don't much care
As much as I may not necessarily agree with the abandonment of a free upgrade, I will be more than happy to replay this again and get that PS5 Platinum
No physical release! That’s a no sale for me then. Was annoyed I couldn’t get a physical complete edition this gen now this!
Ok, what is Sony smoking? I love Insomniac but it feels like they're little more than puppets for corporate at this point.
First you have to pay again for a "remaster" of an already new game you recently bought, and now they broke save games, too?
For everyone defending "new assets and lots of work and etc. etc." Do you realize they are now selling a remaster of a TWO YEAR OLD GAME?! Demons Souls remastered is a remaster of an 11 year old 2 generation old game. That's still ludicrous at $70 but at least it's a game deserving a remaster. Mario 3D All Stars isn't really remaster...it's an up-res and some new sprites, but at least it's a rerelease of a 24 year old, 18 year old, and 13 year old game with modern updates however slim for $60. Spyro remastered was 3 similarly old games remastered into modern games from ancient systems. Heck even Pikmin 3 remastered is at least a remaster of a 2014 game that nobody bought even if it's not remastering much of anything. They at least added content with a new chapter.
This is a remaster of a two freaking year old game already released on a 4k console (PS4 Pro). Did they make this in a vacuum with no idea PS5 was coming? We were already told PS5 was coming before this game even released! These assets were made out of the gates, and if they weren't, customers shouldn't be paying for their poor planning.
So in 2 years do they sell us Ghost of Tsushima Remastered? I'm legitimately not going to buy that game now, even though I've waited years for it, on the expectation they're going to want me to pay for it again just to play it at its best on PS5 in a few years. If I see it $19.99 maybe I'll bite.
Maybe they can sell the up-coming Ratchet in a remaster in 2024, too. Add in some extra shaders and better models and call it a new product? The future of gaming is just buying the same games every few years to get the "real" director's cut? They used to call these feature patches.
Sony has truly lost the marketing war, even if not the console war. This was an easy win. Take the big fancy Spiderman hit, tell people they get the new and improved version if they buy their fancy PS5, and sell them MM, then they're locked in the platform. Big win, Sony looks great, lots of good will, everything is awesome. But no, they want to take the gatekeeper route of very visibly nickel and diming their customers before they even launch their hardware. What are they thinking?
Meanwhile Microsoft just bought freaking DOOM and Skyrim. Someone really needs to send Jimmy packing before the November 12 and wake up sleeping Sony so they can return to the company we remember them being. Unfortunately he reports only to the bean counter CEO Yoshida (not Shu) and until the numbers take a dive nothing will happen. Good will is hard to earn and easy to lose.
@GamingFan4Lyf cross saves work. Put your Spiderman in the ps5 and it will work.
@NEStalgia cross saves work. Your Spiderman game in the ps5 and it works. Demon souls is a remake from ground up.
This is unfortunate news. I won't be playing Spider-Man Remastered then, no interest in having to platinum the game all over again.
@Kefka2589 That's all true, it will run, etc. etc. But what gets under my skin about this release in particular is it's a brand new game. It's not like they are (or shoudl be) retroactively remaking the game as though it's an old game. It was developed in tandem with PS5, and if they weren't building it out with the original game (where we already funded it and were delivered reduced quality assets) then that was their failure. Remakes and remasters have a window that they are valid. Selling remakes of a game 2 years after release is an extremely ugly idea. It's one thing to charge for a "remaster" of an old game. It's another to charge for a "remaster" made 2 years after the game. Or put another way, they were still making the DLC for the base game that you paid for at launch while already preparing to sell you a graphics upgrade separately. It's no ok to sell a graphics upgrade for the game every few years. Again, if this is the direction Sony is going, in what way can they assure me that buying Tsushima now is a good purcase and they won't try to upsell it later? Maybe it's best to wait a few years for all new Sony games to be sure there's not a better version coming later.
Free upgrades may or may not have merits, but with a tentpole game for what's still a new game..... it's an omen of the type of policies we're facing down. They're starting to treat software like hardware. "Oh, that was last year's model."
If this were a game from 4, 5 years ago, it would still be sketchy but you can roll your eyes and kinda approve. But a 2 year old game a year off the DLC......the paint's still wet and the "remaster" moniker doesn't fit well.
Nintendo's another story, and the WiiU ports are indeed gross, but at least one can understand almost nobody had the console and bought those games. I don't feel great about how they treated WiiU owners, but at the same time it was a pretty small group representing a small portion of Switch owners, so it's all new to most owners. And you're not really missing out on much new content or updates if you already played. For PS, we're talking about major sellers to most of the audience, and you're missing out on keystone reasons to buy the new hardware without upgrading. Maybe if they had a bigger tentpole release other than Spiderman and a PS3 remaster beyond Sackboy people would notice less.
This is one of those cases, that image-wise, it may have been better to leave the game as-is (and free in their new Plus service, since it's apparently an old enough game to need remakes, it's old enough to include with Uncharted), rather than have a remake at all, and let MM be the remake. Though I still contend the assets were made before original release and for MM and this update cost them next to nothing, it's a cash grab for launch starved gamers.
@Kefka2589 I suspect there are lots at that point now.
Ummm am I missing something here as to why people are mad? It's a remaster. What other remasters carry your save over from the original game? I sure can't think of any. I don't remember people throwing a fit when Skyrim, Kingdoms of Amalur, Gears Ultimate, and on and on got remastered and didn't let you use your old save.
@Kefka2589 everyone just wants something for nothing don't they. They are quick to forget the fact we're getting an all new online coop for GOT completely free. But quick to moan about this.
really they and every other PS5 dev needs to be sharing like crazy. every day should provide more info. wrap up vids every Friday. It’s weird how little we know about the games and the platform. Microsoft is doing a much better job on this. Maybe because Halo broke, but it’s helping them focus. Jim Ryan’s secrecy approach isn’t working for me. Let me hear from the devs! Free the devs!
I was looking at playing it again anyway, so I might as well get this version. I played on normal, and I was just about to restart a new playthrough on the most difficult setting. Might as well wait for the new improved Spidey.
Really disappointed of what Jim Ryan is doing with Playstation. He really has no direction with anything. Everything what he told us untill now was BS especially about games. For sure they will ask for money for SM because it's a remaster not "PS5 enhanced" version of the game. I think also the updated price for games was a bad ideea at least now at launch; they should have waited to have more adopters. Wich also raises another question, are this prices for games coming to PS4 as well or only for PS5 ?? Sony need a wake up call. I was so excited for PS5 untill the last presentation. I would have preferred honestly for the console to be 600$ but games would still have a normal price and more free PS5 upgrades. But that's just me ☺️
Unless they’ve somehow changed the like P5: Royal (which I highly doubt), there’s no excuse for saves not transferring over. It won’t affect me because I will wait for the remaster and not get Spider-man on PS4, it’s just bad.
@Stevethejedi I'm not looking forward to doing those again. Or those Screwball challenges shudders
@Kienda you can cross save D2 on pc and console. I play on both with the same 3 guardians. All progress is saved across ps4 and pc.
@Neo001001 thanks, I’m gonna try it out.
