Ubisoft has decided to release a statement on Beyond Good & Evil 2, following the news that Michel Ancel — one of the game's original creative leads — is retiring from the industry. It's been a long time since we've seen anything of the project, and it's been in development for years now.
But, according to Ubisoft, that development is progressing well. It says: "Beyond Good and Evil 2 is well underway and we are currently concentrating on core development and production milestones."
The statement goes into a little more detail: "As Michel noted, he hasn’t been directly involved in BG&E2 for some time now, as the team have been hard at work building on top of the solid creative foundation he helped shape. The team’s collective strength has us well on our way to developing a flagship next-generation action-adventure game. We recently passed an important internal milestone, delivering a build that proves our Space Pirate Fantasy and offers hours of gameplay and an incredible level of freedom in a seamless online sandbox."
The bottom line here is that we should be seeing more of Beyond Good & Evil 2 at some point next year. The team's "aiming" to show us the game "in action" — and that's the project's next milestone. Hopefully it all works out, eh?
In case it wasn't already clear, Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still a long way from being finished. We'll have to wait and see how it looks when it supposedly gets shown off in 2021.

Online?
Once upon a time I was so excited for this game. Now with the new open world online direction they went in, that is all gone. I'm still willing to give this game a chance though.
Michel Angel not having a direct involvement with this makes it more unappealing than ever.
@DonJorginho I thought they said always with BG&E
Imagine if it came to switch lol that would be hilarious
@Flaming_Kaiser Never realised till now, sucks tbh
The statement kind of makes you wonder if he was sidelined shortly after its initial reveal hype & he just had to smile & put a happy spin on the new Live-service/Open world MMO aspect to the games press? Might've just needed to serve out a contract term thereafter?
Yeah, I was there when the first CG trailer came... Eh, now. Will just forget about it until they actually come up with something solid.
PS6 Launch day title confirmed!
I guess this means WiLD is canceled as well. Thanks for getting my hopes up with you lofty dreams of giant tree ladies.
it is in development hell. it will either release as a noble failure of a game — scrapped together and released incomplete just to make a return on the investment — or it will be outright cancelled. ubisoft rarely puts out games that have any "artistic" merit to them anymore. this game would have been an auteur work of ancel but seeing as he is abruptly retring before it is complete... well, you get the point.
This game's very existence makes me sad. It doesn't reflect the feel of the original in any way at all. I would rather have no sequel than one so disconnected from its source material. A bit different is fine, but this is like getting a Mario sequel that has more in common with Duke Nukem. It's unrecognizable.
This has clearly gone throug some shuffles in direction. I was turned off as soon as they mentioned online open world experience but mayne with the new 'retirement' of so many of the creative team at Ubisoft this might have changed direction.
This is fishy.
Michel Ancel's beyond good & evil was his dream project, he wanted to make a trilogy. In 2008 he finally started making it but it got caught in development hell.
Then at e3 2018 it was re-announced as a prequel, and Michel Ancel cried on stage because he could finally make his dream project.
And now suddenly this??
It'll be a bad game, nothing like a charming dark Pixar like story about human trafficing and government propaganda, but a generic create your own character mmorpg.
This is gonna get cancelled or turn out bad. It's not gonna be BG&E most likely too.
An online only Ubi developed game....?
LOL, I'm good, they can keep this soon to be macrotransaction riddled mess.
Aaaarrrrgggggghhhhh not an online game. What’s the bet it’s GAAS?
The trailers looked awesome and really roped me in and got me hyped, I was hoping for an epic single player game. Looks like that is not to be.
At least we'll always have the 2 CGI trailers, those were pretty dope, especially the first one.
@DonJorginho Yeah i know i really was looking forward too that one.
Gameplay next year of a CGI pre render scene most likely
@RBMango Not having a direct involvement? Are you joking? He's only been working on it for like 8 years.
@Thelegend159 I mean, it's your fault for not paying attention. They said day 1 it was online. It isn't some grand MMO with monetization. It's just going to have some sort of online feature. Oh no, end of the world.
Jesus the amount of pessimists in these comments is annoying. Literally unbearable reading so much jaded trash from bitter people.
@CuzzoWuzzo - pay attention to what a couple of trailers? Not that they hinted at an online element. A couple of dev features on YouTube? This game’s been silent for a while.
My main concern with online games is that they become the Anthem, Fallout 76 and the Avengers. You know. The games that suck.
@CuzzoWuzzo - so unbearable that you read and commented? The true horror you must have experienced!
@Thelegend159 Kind of weird seeing that particular list, because at one point destiny 2 would have been on it. I guess that means it'll hopefully be like that or ovwrwatch minus the over nerfing each season brought.
