Following on from its announcement last weekend at DC FanDome, IGN has been lucky enough to interview Warner Bros Montreal about all things Gotham Knights. The developer shared some pretty interesting details relating to combat, story, special abilities, and the open world that could change your perspective on things -- that is if the trailer and gameplay footage didn't already do it for you, of course.
As far as the narrative goes, senior producer Fleur Marty states that this is an entirely self-contained story that doesn't force you to play online with other people. "If you're playing single player, you can be offline if you want to. We think that teaming up and living that dynamic duo fantasy can be also a really great experience for players, but we won't force it on them." Co-op will only ever be for a maximum of two players and you can play the entire game as a single superhero -- that's our Batgirl playthrough sorted then.
Rather interestingly, you and a buddy can both play as the same superhero during co-operative play. "Now, if you happen to have two Batgirls, you can also do that. Obviously, the potential of having different Batgirl builds, and how they look different and play differently is really cool too."
And as far as combat goes, this is something more akin to a traditional third-person action game rather than the freeform action of the Batman: Arkham franchise. "The way you're accessing some of your special moves and things like that can vary I'm sure, but in terms of having both attack and defensive choices, having a range of combo choices, having variations in strike types and attack types, being able to combo in your ranged attacks as well as your melee attacks - all of that is there, and I think will be comfortable for people who have played modern, contemporary third-person action-adventure style brawlers."
You'll be able to explore the entire open world of Gotham right from the very beginning of the game, and there won't be able level-gating to block you off from certain areas. Nice! Are you excited about Gotham Knights? Sneak into the comments below.

So glad it's not like Avengers
I’m slightly disappointed it’s not in the Arkham universe but I still this looks great. I’m ready for another batman game (although without him 😉)
The only thing that put me off was seeing all the enemies levels above their heads, I'd like to see the back of such nonsense now.
That said it does sound really good how its setup and even better now that I know that I don't have to play as Robin or Jason Todd especially, definitely one I'm looking forward to now
Sounding better but need more vids and more Info but a lot better than the rumours
@carlos82 I heard you can turn of UI so hopefully that's part of it cause I had the same issue. Honestly looking forward to this more than the Rocksteady game tbh.
I wonder how they will balance the single player experience.
Just for curiosity's sake, who here does really play long (more than a 5 hours let's say) narrative driven co-op games? Which ones?
RPG elements are ruining my games
I was personally pretty bummed when I found out what it was and nothing has changed on that front. At least you can play it offline, which is good. I mean, I'm not exactly the target demographic anyway since when it comes to superheroes I know who Batman is and then that's about it.
But then I guess that's why I lost interest when I found out it was the B Team.
@carlos82 What with the hate towards robin(most likely tim drake) and Red hood?they both seem cool.
@daveofduncan
Turning off bars/health meters/numbers as an option has now been confirmed by the developer.
I actually feel that the slightly more colourful, larger-than-life, superhero-y take on Gotham of this game could be a nice change of pace. And as long as it is available as a single-player experience, yeah, I'm up for this.
This does sound better now. Being a single player or co-op game with a self contained storyline is much more appealing to me than a live service game.
The combat is my main concern right now, but I'll hold off judgement on that until closer to the release.
Is there a difference between Batgirl and Batwoman?
Love what I'm hearing of this one. Hoping they hit the 2021 target.
@Orange_Man_Bad Yep, different people entirely.
This makes it sounds a bit more promising but will need to know more, a lot more, before truly getting excited about this game.
It's not a sp focused title though regardless of the spin and that isn't what I was personally hoping for. Same goes for Suicide Squad.
@JapaneseSonic I think I was about 6 when that happened but I definitely would have done
@rachetmarvel just most of my favourite Batman stories and movies have been when he's not around and Jason Todd is just a whiny little so and so. I don't mind Dick Graysson to be fair
I know this is technically down as a GaaS, which I hate. But I do love Gotham and this series, so I do hope they don't follow the same trends as the others and establish's itself. Still a way to go, but it definitely has potential.
@EquiinoxGII This is not a GaaS.
I love games in the BatMan Universe. So super happy this is coming.
Online co-operative play is a seller for me. I rarely see my cousins or brother that do not live in NY. Gaming at night after all the kids are sleeping is our catch-up time.
Hopefully turns out good.
Avengers, Suicide Squad, Arkham Knights, Miles Morales... this is like a golden age of comic book games. Sign me up for all of them!
Awesomenesssssssssssssssssssss!
@LiamCroft You kind of left out the most important part of that interview for a lot of people who had concerns after it was announced:
Is this a game-as-service?
Fleur Marty: "This is very much not designed as a game-as-service. There is an ability tree, which is different for each of the characters, and then there's gear that you craft - and so choices that you're going to be making - but that does not mean that this is a game-as-service.
I hope they do keep the metroidvania elements of the Arkham series.
Looking forward to this badboy. But I really hope you can turn off the damage counters. And mute the conversations 😂 It's also nice that it seems that each character has their draws, I was expecting it just to be Nightwing (he's the one for me tbf) or Batgirl, but there's lots of people who are liking Red Hood and Robin too.
It sounds OK… Although, I hardly find this to be one of "most exiting PS5 projects yet". That's just stretching it.
Anyhow, I need to see more. Not sold on it just yet.
Are you excited about Gotham Knights?
Nope
@captainsandman I think the whole thing was a little confusing, but someone posted a quote on the subject. That's good news though.
I have mixed feeling after watched the playthrough...
I think there is too much fantasy elements for my likely for a Batman title...
@Orange_Man_Bad Yes. Batgirl is a cool character that fits into the DC universe from the early days and makes sense. Batwoman is an annoying and shoehorned-in rather recent character created to cater to a certain crowd demanding inclusivity.
Looking forward to this. If they add more characters later like Azrael, Spoiler, Orphan, Signal, Batwoman, and Damien, then I’d be really happy.
But as it’s unlikely to happen bringing any or most of those above...Catwoman with all of the above would exist in my ideal version of the game.
@doctommaso yes because gays in comics are a new thing lol
also the first Batwoman showed up in like 1956 so....
@zupertramp Talking about the modern Batwoman, as you know — introduced in 2006. The 1956 one is completely irrelevant to the new character, who was clearly created merely to cater to diversity.
