As usual, racing games will play a big role in showcasing next generation hardware. With titles like Gran Turismo Sport or DriveClub, the genre is often home to some of the best looking games around, and that will continue as we head towards PlayStation 5. Case in point: DIRT 5 from Codemasters.
It was stated a while back that the Xbox Series X version of the off-road racer would be able to run at an ultra-smooth 120 frames per second. It's an impressive figure, considering the majority of console games still don't offer 60 fps. It's now been confirmed that the PS5 version will also be capable of running at this enhanced frame rate.
Speaking as part of a big PS5 feature in Official PlayStation Magazine, DIRT 5's development director Rob Karp reveals the stat: "The power of the PS5 also means that we will have an option for 120fps, which is very exciting for the racers who know that every frame counts," he says.
That it will be an option perhaps suggests we'll be able to choose between resolution or performance. This is becoming more commonplace these days; would you prefer more detail onscreen or a smoother experience? For the PS5 version of DIRT 5, we could see the game offering a 120 fps mode with reduced resolution or a 60 fps mode at full 4K.
We'll have to wait and see what the final game is like, of course, but do you like the sound of that? Are you fussed about enhanced frame rates on PS5? Race down to the comments section below.

My TV is 60hz so anything above that is meaningless to me but its nice to have options for those with the equipment necessary
Like above, I believe my tv is also the same. I would upgrade, but my tv is only a year old, and I still think most devs will struggle with 60fps, so ehh. Good feature to have though.
All of us: Can we have all games at 60fps please?
Codemasters: We've gone one better at 120FPS!!!!
All of us: Can we just have 60fps?
Sony: Here's 8k without checkerboarding.
All of us: Can we please just have 60fps?
EA: We got gold card packs and always connected social circumcision.
All of us: Arrrrrrghhhhh
Ubisoft: Will 28fps do?
All of us:
@carlos82
Nearly all TVs as only 60hz my old plasma claim 600refresh rate but it was a 60hz screen with smoothing unless you’re spending above 4 figures chances are you have a native 60hz screen.
Just Googled this, our 4 year old Samsung is 120hz, will only buy another TV when really needed... but PS5 is nailed on
I have a 4K TV that has a 120hz refresh rate, but like I said to the Xbox fans, they said the game would be 4K 60fps OR a 120fps performance mode. I really doubt there'll be a 4K 120fps mode, that's just pushing way too many pixels.
@themcnoisy Lol
Upvoted for bringing a smile to my face.
A lot of TV's won't accept more than HD at 120Hz - and some will say they offer 120hz (or more) but that's just their image processing and interpolating to create a 'smoother' look - but cannot accept more than 60fps so it can be confusing. Its worth checking to see what your TV can actually receive (resolution and frame rate) and accurately display.
You will need a HDMI2.1 enabled TV to receive a 4k/120 image. Whether the game runs at 1080p or native 4k is not necessarily important - its what the console outputs. You may also need to go to the settings to reduce the resolution output and then let your 4k TV handle the upscaling rather than the console upscale to 4k and then send that to your TV. If you have a HDMI2.0 TV, you may have to drop the output resolution down to 1440p or even 1080p to get 120fps (if your TV can accept it).
It maybe possible to run the game at 120fps and get the benefits that offers - even if the TV can only display 60 frames per second - just drop the frames it can't display. The advantages of higher frame rates are not 'just' visual, but because the game is running at 120fps, its more responsive, has lower input lag because its processing your inputs much faster and more often.
There are several games that offer 4k/60 on a PS4 Pro so its not a 'stretch' to offer 120fps on a PS5. They don't also have to offer a choice of lower Resolution - they could use CB rendering and construct a 4k image - technically the game is running at a lower resolution but using some pixels from the previous frame to construct a 4k image. Of course they could also reduce some settings - maybe don't use Ray Traced reflections for example to boost frame rates...
Anyway, it will be interesting.
Sony are releasing TV's that'll full advantage of next generation consoles, so I look at getting one of them at the beginning of next year. I've put off getting a new 4K TV until the PS5/XSX release's. Looking forwards to this game, definitely picking up the PS5 version.
I picked up a Samsung q95t month ago
My body is ready
@gingerfrog Most TVs have been 60hz for 4 decades. Outside of the PAL50 standard. Which is why 30fps has been a technical failure for 4 decades.
I don't think the PS5 can run 120fps. Series X will.
@Lionheart5 they've literally stated it you can play their game at 120fps. I'm lost how you can say the ps5 can't run supported titles at that framerate? Most won't.. But that's the same for the series x.
more hyped for split screen support but the same optimizations should help both right?
I’m defo getting this on PS5, can’t wait!
@solocapers it’s just a sad, jealous xbox troll
@Arugula don't worry I'm right there with you. Unless I'm looking at a side by side I honestly can't tell. Im sure I've played and loved hundreds of games that are only 30fps. If a game is awesome I don't think it would be made "better" by framerate alone, much like the whole 720/900/1080P stuff at the beginning of the current gen. It's really just online bragging rights lol.
4K @60fps and I’m happy.
And I mean 4K - not dynamic resolution and locked 60fps.
60Hz will do just fine. Bring back Driveclub, best weather effects of any game 😎
LG C9 ticks most of the next gen boxes, HDMI 2.1 120Hz if you have a spares £1000+
Most people don't have a 120hrz TV panel...? Full 2.1 HDM, I so this option will be a waste to alot of potential buyers of Dirt 5.
Now this is what I brought my TV for, I hope more games on ps5 support 120hrtz 👍😉
@Mezzer well I do 😉😉😜
I only brought myself an LG B9 to go with ps5 early this year, only though recently started enjoying it because true motion was on and all my games had a terrible ghosting effect I had no idea what it was till I googled it but I’m ready for 120FPS however I will probably go for an in between mode with 4K 60fps with high visuals when available I’m not one for noticing the difference between 30-60 FPS never mind 120 being a console gamer, let’s face it you want the highest FPS and visuals you used to get yourself a decent monitor and pc which I’ve never had.
I’m surprised the fact dirt 5 on ps5 supporting 120fps same as Xbox SX is only being talked about I receive my PlayStation uk magazine around the 20th so I already seen this two weeks ago I wonder if there will be anything new this month I will see ahead of some of these news outlets.
I would take graphics over 120Hz every time. I'm getting older and fast pace games like PVP shooters is not something I still enjoy. I bought a 4k HDR TV and PS4 Pro because i love the visuals it provides.
@huyi so do I. LG C9 and a dolby atmos home surround set up... But many many people don't have this.
Also bare in mind. 120 only really has an advantage in fast shooters and racing games.... but remember ALLM helps also... not all Tvs have this.
I still believe most PS5 games will still be 30fps with native 4K with more games hitting 4K with 60fps...people getting too carried away with 120...which to most eyes can't be seen.
Xbox one x allows 1440p 120... Not sure if any games support it though?
Don't be too fooled by all the buzz words. Means nothing if the games are average or are not your kind of games... As a gamer from the 70s I can safely say buzz words around new systems are generally exaggerated.... Even the One X only hits native 4K on a select few games.... yet it was hailed to hit 4K on most games...
