2K Sports has signed an agreement with the National Football League Players Association to ensure that the NFL’s biggest stars will appear in “multiple” American football projects it has in the pipeline, the first of which is scheduled to release next year. According to a press release, the “partnership will grant 2K the right to feature the names, numbers, images, and likenesses for over 2,000 current NFL players”.
For those of you who missed the previous announcement, EA Sports has retained exclusive rights to create simulation games based on the NFL, meaning you shouldn’t expect a spiritual successor to the legendary NFL 2K5. More likely is an arcade-themed alternative, similar to NBA 2K Playgrounds 2. The press release does mention that multiple projects are in development, with the first set to debut in 2021. We’re excited to see what’s in store.

Arcade? Oh nooo, I was hoping for college football.
Don't think they have the license for college football.
This could be interesting, I can get down on an arcade type football game.
Excited to see what they come up with. I do still enjoy madden but it's way past time we got a worthy alternative, arcade or otherwise. Looking forward to it next year!
Is that Sticky Icky Ricky Williams?
@nessisonett The title of the article said NFL not NCAA.
@redd214 There is always Mutant Football League.
Don’t tease us with that NFL Street picture! There’s no way 2k will produce anything near the caliber of that series.
I remember when we had so many companies making sports titles...Sega (what happened to their classics?). Sega had World Series Baseball, College Football, NFL, NHL and NBA. Nintendo used to have some and then we went on to other companies. I honestly wish Sony would create more sports franchise...their MLB The Show titles are amazing, and I could only imagine what they could do with some others...Football, Hockey, Tennis, Basketball and even others like Volleyball and more.
@JLPick spot on MLB the show is amazing and I wish Madden was like that!
Would love a fully licensed College Football game, surely it can't be that hard to do now?
@JLPick Yep, and Sony via 989 Studios made great sports games during the PS1 days.
Would love them to do a footie game. Fifa and Pes need the competition.
I just want a new Blitz. Is that too much to ask?
@nessisonett I'd pay big money for a 2k sports / visual concepts College football game!
@Tasuki Key word: "worthy" lol
I didnt even understand the arcade version last time i played it. 😆
I would love an NFL Street style game
@redd214 Mutant Football League is pretty "worthy" as you put it. There's even an option where you can turn off the field hazards and dirty plays and then it plays like a regular football game.
@Tasuki glad you enjoy it
I just wish EA wouldn't be allowed to monopolise the professional sports gaming market. The only one that benefits is the EA shareholders
