It’s not much of a secret anymore that Ellie can play guitar in The Last of Us: Part II. The best thing is that this mechanic is fully interactive, allowing you to toggle between a number of keys and use the analogue stick to select chords. You can strum with the touchpad, and you can actually come up with some pretty compelling performances overall.
VG247 has recorded some insane covers using the mechanic, however, and we’d be remiss not to share this with the rest of you. It plays songs such as Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. The results do, quite naturally, vary but we’re still seriously impressed with the kind of tunes it’s able to kick out of this thing. Bravo!

We don't have any guitar tutorials in our The Last of Us 2 guide, but we have tons of other tips you may find useful. And if you haven't bought the game yet, maybe consider why you should through here.

I really liked the Pink Floyd,Chris Issac and Cranberries ones. It helps that I absolutely love those songs
TLOU2: A game about a single minded quest for revenge.
Gamers: The Guitar Hero's pretty good.
Sorry, this is unrelated to the article but I can’t find help anywhere. Why is the picture quality so bad?? I’m on an LG b9 oled and the image is atrocious. I thought it may be the tv so I put red dead on and it was crystal clear, is it just me or is it the game??
Sorry for bombing the article, but you’re an understanding bunch!
Urgh, I hate it when they say Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. It’s a good cover but it’s still a Leonard Cohen song.
@CFDennett
I have a B9 as well, game looks amazing, its the film grain, I'm not a fan of, would turn it of if possible
I wasn't super keen on her New Order cover... but this is pretty good!
Was looking forward to seeing what people would do with this. Such a cool little mini game with depth
Thats awesome, if I had any ideas what those letters meant I'd give it a go myself 😆
@carlos82 Chords. You could actually google your favourite song chords and see what they consist of (for example :
https://www.guitarchords247.com/popular-guitar-chord-songs/jeff-buckley-hallelujah/ the intro consists of C, Am, C, Am chords, which you can see on the wheel in the video) , and be able to play them on this without having to learn the actual chord finger placements (ie the hard bit) of a guitar. Not a bad tool looking at it.
@nookie_egg I was kind of joking I just have virtually no musical talent, however thanks for the link as my stepson has a guitar so I might just give it a go and who knows
@carlos82 Wasn't trying to sound patronising or anything, but might be useful for those who don't know 🤷♂️
Ok, this is impressive.
@nookie_egg I didn't think you were and before my stepson got one I genuinely wouldn't have known what the paired letters meant. I'll definitely give it a go though 👍
@carlos82 That's got "youtube video" written all over it
Where's the push Square article regarding the user's scores for this game?
Ok so why did we HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE CONSOLE GENERATION FOR NAUGHTY DOG TO PROVE THE PS4 TOUCHPAD COULD BE SO ACCURATE AND INTRICATE??
The guitar stuff on last of us 2 is better than any game Nintendo or ms will put out this year on it's own!!!!!
She won't be able to play it very well...
Loving this game so far, played the whole day. I wasnt spoiled by the leaks, and finally seeing what people were mad about. I understand.. and it sucks what happened, but it just makes me more invested in the story and i wanna kick some ass now. Its what the developers wanted. Holy moly
@nessisonett Honestly, though, in terms of exposure (via Shrek, of all things) and how it influenced later covers, I think I could live with it being attributed to John Cale. He might not have originally conceived the song, but the way he performed it is generally the way it is remembered. Cohen's version suffers from his raspy vocals, and, honestly, is little more than a historical curiosity for most people.
Although I think my favorite song of Cohen's will always be First We Take Manhattan. Cohen's harsh voice is a perfect match for the apocalyptic, fanatical lyrics. And the juxtaposition with the song's peppy female backing vocals actually works really well.
@Ralizah Yeah that’s true, Cale’s cover version included the same choice of verses as Buckley’s for instance. I just have an irrational hatred towards original songs being forgotten about because covers get way more famous. It’s worse when the original isn’t even obscure, like when One Direction did a mashup of Teenage Kicks and One Way or Another, already sacrilege, but then Directioners were extremely flippant about the original songs. Truly maddening and entirely inconsequential, I know.
I actually am not a big fan of Cohen’s more critically acclaimed stuff like Songs of Love and Hate to be honest, although First We Take Manhattan is an absolute bop considering his other work. My favourite song of his is probably You Want It Darker, from his last album. The levels of rasp are at almost Louis Armstrong levels by that point 😂😂
I can't believe critics thought that this game was ND's best work.
I wonder of it's intentional or not that these are exactly the songs every teen who thinks they're deep and uniquely misunderstood plays when they learn guitar? Talking from experience here, me and my friends and countless people at parties we went to as teens. Though we'd throw in the odd other thing like the Pulp Fiction theme because it sounds impressive but is deceptively easy to do.
@nessisonett I am with you. Buckley's version was beautiful, but give Cohen his credit, plus I love Cohen's original.
