As part of its latest livestream, Bungie has confirmed its plans for the next-gen version of Destiny 2. Those who own the game on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade for free on PlayStation 5, and the studio promises 60 frames-per-second on Sony's upcoming console. Nice.
What's more, PS4 and PS5 players will be able to play together thanks to cross-play support. In short, it sounds like the developer wants this transition to be as smooth as possible.
Previously, Bungie announced that Destiny 2 would be coming to PS5, but said that we'd have to wait a little longer for the details. It's good to know that existing Guardians can make the jump at no extra cost.
Are you still playing Destiny 2? If not, are you tempted to dive back in on PS5? Lock and load in the comments section below.

Thank the lord that this confirms the Sony version of Smart delivery. I was worried they were making a real blunder with the Bloodborne rumours suggesting a PS5 remaster.
So the free to play game is free to play?
@piggyhero How is this a confirmation?
Destiny 2 is not a SIE game.
And it's also F2P, you don't need cross-buy for a free game...
Hmmm. Are people still playing Destiny 2? If so, good for them. I hope this trend carries over to other games as well.
Got to keep those base players...
And this is how you do UBISOFT. Cross gen with 60 fps!
I haven’t played destiny 2 since the first day on the first annual pass and vowed never to go back but this does look good
@piggyhero I don't think it necessarily confirms "Smart delivery for PS5". Bungie did the same thing with Destiny 1 PS3/PS4 so I wouldn't take this as a confirmation of a broad initiative until Sony themselves say so.
@redd214 @Makina But I would guess DLC carries over. Also they suggested before that there would be a PS5 version but couldn't confirm how it would work. Now they are confirming a free upgrade which sounds like they have confirmation from Sony that this will be possible.
I also don't think this means Bloodborne will be free or any other SIE game I'm just glad that it likely means other 3rd party games like Valhalla and CP2077 will be upgradeable.
It's curious that on the Xbox site says 4k 60fps, while here says only 60fps.
2k on PS5?
As a free to play game it's a shame d2 requires ps+ and a lot of add ons to be any fun. Was hoping a f2p ps5 destiny would avoid the plus requirement but I doubt that'll happen with cross gen+cross play. Also removing content is never good
Already played 60 fps version on pc a couple of months ago with my 8 year old video card (geforce 570 gtx), it's embarassing destiny 2 can't play 60 fps on ps4..
@piggyhero Yes, they said that DLC and purchases carry over. While it does strongly make a case that Sony will have something similar, I once again wouldn't say its a definite confirmation until Sony reveals its plans, thats all.
@Makina They said 4k/60 on both during the stream so likely they just missed it in the article here
@redd214 I see. Thanks for the answer.
@wiiware The PS4 is roughly a GTX660, so your PC is better than a PS4, assuming you have at least any type of Intel i series chip in there. Or a high end Core 2 Duo/Quad
Wouldn’t mind giving it another go tbh. Put thousands of hours into D1 and played a bit of D2 but got bored and packed it in. There’s been so many seasons, dlcs and add ons that I’ve no idea what I’d have to buy and what’s free. Fancy it on ps5 tho.
@redd214 It confirms publishers are able to do The equivalent of Smart delivery if they want to regardless of what SIE do with their own games.
@Makina The DLC is not free so not having to re-buy it it’s a benefit.
@Ryall We've known that they are able to this entire generation, hardly a revelation. Example: Destiny 1
I'm not liking the way specific publishers are announcing this. It should be a platform wide feature, not a favor benevolent publishers and developers do to us.
Used to love destiny but destiny 2 really took advantage of their players, haven't been back and will not bother on PS5.
Not on my PS5 it won't. Get that crap outta here!
Ah. This confirms my guess. Was hoping for cross play. Thought I'd missed the boat on Destiny 2 (Only played the first), so will pick this up soon.
@Menchi I have 8 years old cpu too, a quad core i7 2600 3.4ghz, but doom 2016 on normal setting play way better on ps4 rather than on my pc, I think destiny 2 is just not optimized enough for ps4, I rather have destiny 3 with new engine optimized for ps5.
I'm interested in assassin creed performance on new gen, I already upgraded my pc vga to ndivia 1660 ti but assassin creed odyssey performance hover about 45 fps when in the city (1080p or 2k resolutions didn't matter in ac odyssey benchmark), I hope ubisoft optimized new ac engine for ps5.
Man I really can't wait for ps5, the cpu and ssd upgrade is really massive, I prefer playing games on console rather than pc 😃
@gollumb82 daily active players regularly over half a million so yah
@wiiware I don't think it's that embarrassing for a game that's 3 years old on console that's 7 years old and how many games manage 60 FPS that are that old on PS4, not many
@wiiware sorry the point that was made by bungie was its 4k @ 60fps and I highly doubt (infact know) your pc can get to those lofty heights!
I am on a i7 4790s 32gb ram and on my old card (1060 3gb) couldnt get close to 60fps @ 4k now I have a 5700xt and can get 60fps @ 1440p and 45-50fps @ 4k.
The engine was written for ps4 base model as well as xbone base model.
They wont be putting out a d3, the announcements yesterday were pretty plain and clear cut they are finishing this story arc on d2 platform, the idea of putting areas and content into a vault and rotating each season is the only way they can get around the 105gb roof the engine and patch system can support on consoles which I commend them for coming up with an idea thats not a complete deletion of content.
@Ypmud Yeah, I try d2 on pc only at 1080p since I have 1080p monitor at that time, 4k performance is harder on gpu I think.
@mini_piekarnik Yup, ps4 (and xbox) cpu this gen isn't too good so we rarely get 60 fps games on it. I hope we can get more games at 60 fps with ps5 since the console have great cpu, gpu, ram, and fast storage. I don't have problems with 30 fps, but at least for first person shooter and racing games 60 fps is a must.
