Update: The official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account has given us a clear-cut explanation with regards to the game on PS5: "We are happy to confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 will be backwards compatible with both next-gen consoles! Your PS4 copy of the game will work on PS5 on launch day."
The account continues: "A later upgrade to Cyberpunk 2077, taking full advantage of the next-gen hardware, will be available for free."
Original story: With Cyberpunk 2077's recent delay from the 17th September to the 19th November, a lot of fans have been wondering whether the game will simply make the jump to next-gen consoles. Both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X are expected to launch around the title's new release date, but according to CD Projekt Red, Cyberpunk 2077 is still a current-gen game.
The company's latest investor call, as summarised by Reddit user Tavarish, details the reasoning behind the delay, and gives us some insight into CD Projekt's plans for PS5. For starters, the developer isn't worried about launching alongside next-gen systems primarily because of backwards compatibility.
Secondly, the firm says that Cyberpunk 2077 will be playable on PS5 from day one, and will apparently look better on PS5 than it will on PS4. It's unclear whether this means that the game will receive some sort of update on next-gen machines, or whether the point simply refers to the jump in hardware power.
In any case, Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting a "more robust update" in 2021, supposedly adding all of the next-gen bells and whistles that you'd expect. This update will be free for everyone who owns the game on current-gen consoles. This specific plan was already partly confirmed by CD Projekt Red earlier this year, when it announced that the game would receive a free upgrade on Xbox Series X.
So there you have it. While it doesn't look like Cyberpunk 2077 will become a cross-gen release, it will be making immediate use of next-gen hardware.
The title's Night City Wire livestream is still scheduled for next week, and it'll be followed by press previews of the game.

Perfect, I wasn't gonna play it on PS4 anyway.
Definitely saving this for Christmas morning on PS5 now.
Yeah, I'm definitely gonna play this game on the ps5 as well. No point in playing it on ps4 anymore.
Interesting. Also feel like I'll probably just wait til next year's proper update and play it on a next gen system.
Honestly right now I don't even need launch games for the PS5. If the system runs all the PS4 big hitters that's plenty to keep me going for a few months.
Probably the first thing I do on the new system is a replay of Horizon or God of War minus the vacuum background noise.
So it'll be something like dynamic resolution which can scale all the way to 4K and hopefully an unlocked framerate mode
I'm buying it as soon as it's released for PS4. Play it to death about 5 times then repeat for the PS5 version.
I will buy it on ps4.when the season pass comes i will get it on ps5.word up son
I wonder how this may affect sales. Just by the comments it seems some people will just wait for the PS5 "version or upgrade"
Maybe the hope is that you start on one console and then move your game to the next
Figured this would be the case but good to have official confirmation.
I mean this is how it should be done with all PS4 games on PS5. You shouldn't have to pay for another version if you can still play the original game on the console.
If the PS5 comes out before I'll definitely play it on that, but if not I'm not waiting. Even if I end up switching mid playthrough I'm starting this game as soon as it launches. It certainly seems like it will have plenty of replay-ability so I can do another run after the meatier upgrade next year.
I just want 60 fps mode on ps5, I'm okay with 30 fps as long as the game isn't first person shooter or fighting games.
@wiiware hopefully it’s 60fps since it is an FPS.
Has CD Projekt said what time the Night City Wire stream is? The only info I can find is the day.
It would lose a lot of money if they release it just for PS5................there are millions and millions of PS4 customers..........New consoles tend to be slow burners to make money will take time ..............where as on PS4 you allready have potential for a lot more sales.
@sawaoyamanaka 😛
I'm eager to play it on my PS4 as soon as it releases, as I probably won't get a PS5 straight away.
Updated.
Does this refer to a physical PS4 disc or a digital PS4 copy or both?
Cool, but too bad it's 2021. I was hoping for a day one patch when the next gen consoles release. Anyway, playing it on a PS5 rather than OG PS4 will already make a difference, because it should at least reach PS4 Pro graphics.
I bought this as a pre-order in February but not going to play it until the full next gen upgrade has been released. I'm also not playing Ghost of Tsushima, Last of us 2 and Assassin's creed Valhalla until next gen but I'm filling in the gaps by going through all the Assassins Creed games from the first game up to Odyssey as well as RDR2 so plenty to hold my attention until the end of November .
Ghosts
Last of us part 2
Cyber 2077
Rdr2
FF7 remake
Will be getting a PS5 version I guarante
I just got last of us part 2 installing it now 95gb and my first game with an install first disc lol. I won't be getting a PS5 not for at least a few years decided to upgrade my 10 year old pc to a modern rig and I'm playing on that more now because my games look amazing. I will get one for Spiderman 2, ratchet and clank but not yet I can wait
I'm so glad they'll still be supporting PS4 users! As for me, will wait for the inevitable PS5 re-release or PS5 upgrade/patch.
@chris730920 it's a great idea. Wanted to do the same but caved for the last of us 2. Just need to play that game 😊
I'll probably play it on low settings on my PC to squeeze as high a framerate out of it as I can. Then, if I get a next gen console, I'll buy the complete edition when it goes on sale.
CDPR once again showing the gaming industry what consumer friendly practices look like. I can't imagine any other company that would give its customers a free version upgrade from PS4 to PS5 instead of simply charging full price twice.
Does anyone know how the upgrade works i know uou need to put the ps5 disc in but how do you go about actually obtaining it for free do you buy it then get your money back for doing so by registering it online a code or do they send you one by going online and putting a code from the ps4 box? Also how does this affect someone buying it second hand on ps4 if it came with a code but cannot use again or gets lost lets say? Intriguing to know.
I'm going to try and wait for the update for next gen. Waited a year for witcher 3 and played like a dream with all dlc. I think this one is going to have a fair bit of jank at launch.
I’ll buy the game once the proper PS5 patch is out. I want to play the best version of the game and I’m worried they’ll screw PS players again, as they did with PS4 Pro support coming well after they hooked up Microsoft.
@Tacktful It looks like a great game to cave in on 😂 I’m looking forward to it, hope you enjoy
Guess a PS4 game will be the hottest ps5 launch title.
Gonna be playing this on PC. I’ll be running this as hard as I can on a Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti and AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
I'll wait for the PS5 version
I'm gonna get it on Steam first, but definitely making this one of my first PS5 game purchases alongside Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Well they have to, I believe every game finished after July 17 has to make both a PS4 and PS5 version. So yes, they'd need to support next gen.
"A later upgrade to Cyberpunk 2077, taking full advantage of the next-gen hardware, will be available for free." - cool story. When? Can we at least have a release window?
@Nomnom
Wrong. They just have to be playable on ps5 through backwards compatibility, meaning they'll not be ps5 versions, they'll just be ps4 games running on ps5.
@hoffa007 it will simply be an update for the game you download to your console, it won't be a different game.
@Mpquikster even if they made a "ps5 labeled" version it would be exactly the same.
hmm, i'll be waiting for the full ps5 upgrade before buying then. the cost will go down and my first experience will be ps5 ready - i don't often run through big games multiple times so i don't want my first time through to be the lesser experience.
@alphadrago5 it's an update most games released in the ps5 window will have and it doesn't require too much work on their part
@megapud ok thanks.
@Lonejester really important question that no one's asked or addressed
@Craigsouthern @Lonejester
I mean, whether it's the disc or the digital version of the console is irrelevant.
The update will be downloaded onto the system and applied to the game just like every other game update.
