It's fair to say that this article has been a long time coming. Final Fantasy VII Remake is less than a week away from launch, and reviews are starting to hit the web. All in all, it's looking very, very good for Cloud and co., with the majority of reviewers dishing out high scores and a lot of praise. We imagine that Square Enix is breathing a heavy sigh of relief right about now.
Push Square - 8/10
Measured against the immense expectations that surround it, Final Fantasy VII Remake is a great game that will inevitably disappoint some fans. That said, playing through the Midgar storyline 23 years later is giddily surreal, and the game does a fantastic job of expanding the existing plot, while also pushing a surprising amount of fresh ideas. Some frustratingly poor level design hampers the fun at times, and visually the game is all over the place, but when it's at its best, Remake is brilliant, and it's elevated to even greater heights by an excellent combat system. It may not be the perfect remake that we've all been dreaming of these past five years, but it is a thoroughly enjoyable, nostalgia-driven ride that understands the magic of Final Fantasy VII.
GameSpot - 10/10
Regardless of your history with the original game, Final Fantasy VII Remake is an astounding achievement. The wait for its release was a long one, but in gameplay, story, characters, and music, it delivers--the wait was worth it.
Destructoid - 9/10
I kind of agonized over rating Final Fantasy VII Remake. It's going to garner a lot of discussion from people who are both blown away by the new treatment and disappointed by it, and those feelings are not mutually exclusive. In the end — after thinking on it for some time and removing nostalgia from the equation entirely — I came to the conclusion that this world is full of powerful characters and a setting that's worth remembering: remake or not.
Game Informer - 8.75/10
Regardless of what the future holds, Final Fantasy VII Remake finds an impressive equilibrium between its past and its present. Square Enix nods to the original without depending on that familiarity, crafting a distinctive world and exciting combat system that feel modern. The new approach still has rough edges, but that doesn’t stop Final Fantasy VII Remake from carving out its own legacy.
RPG Site - 8/10
Despite some misgivings about some of the liberties taken, Final Fantasy VII Remake is an admirable foundation to build off of for future entries, especially in terms of its standout combat and some wonderful examples of building on the premises of the original game.

Was expecting EuroGamer "No Score"
Sounds like you blokes across the pond have an opportunity to get it (or any new release) on the cheap.

@lacerz Boo, missed that. Could have saved a tenner, with some leg work.
Goot to hear it's a competent remake! Metacritic average right now is sitting on 8.7
You forgot to include the 6s.
It's nice to have well reviewed, new games to play.
@usaislie There are barely any negative reviews about this game.
Don't be salty just because this game hasn't failed like you most likely wanted to.
Square have struck gold with this and you should be happy to see a developer often shrouded with negative press nowadays be given some positive limelight for once with their hard work, determination and passion to bring something that gamers have wanted for years to life.
This is a monumental moment in gaming, and has proven all it's doubters, including you it seems, wrong.
Looks good, plays good, but there's no way this game is 10/10.
Robert, I advise you to not only update your review once the day-1 patch is released and fixes the texture issue, but remove that paragraph altogether in the actual review.
That is, if there is a day-1 patch (which many people claim it will be).
@DonJorginho it's 87 meta relax lol even dreams and the better rpg persona are much higher. FFVII is overhyped game. It's okayish at most it's incomplete too.
@kyleforrester87 I posted on the forum that is what I did about 10 days ago. I thought you taken me off your ignore list? 😂
I've read that some players are upset with what Nomura has done, and that they feel that this isn't a genuine remake anymore, and story-wise is closer to Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children. I'm curious if anyone has an opinion on this?
@usaislie lol at incomplete.
if you bothered to read developer interviews and articles you would know that they always said this is part 1.
it can't be incomplete if the game was never advertised as the full ff7 game. it was always advertised as being the remake of the midgar section with other parts to follow. and for a remake of the midgar section it for sure is not incomplete either since they added stuff. and if you are still bothered that it is only part 1 well please know that if they dicided to do all the other parts in one game,stuff of the OG would have to be cut. so you would not end up with a complete game than either.
it's ok to dislike a game for sure,but don't be the person that always craps on the game just because it is not for you.
@JohnnyShoulder I give your posts a cursory glance (at best)
Good to know. I will buy in 10 years when the complete edition comes out. I still want to finish ffx, x2, xii, iii, iv and v
@kyleforrester87 Apparently so!
@jdv95 i have FFVII didn't say its bad but it's not great either. Just because it's not 10/10 doesn't mean i hate it lol. It's 6 at most. 6 is above average. Some reviews gave it a 6 go argue with them.
Sounds like a good game. The score doesn’t really matter. Most of us know what we are getting. Whether it’s a 7/10 or a 10/10 who cares?
@usaislie metacritic is a joke.
@Arnna that what i thought until some people brought it up so i will use it too.
Just bought the game and preload it, can't wait to play it 😃
