Yesterday, Kotaku broke the news that since publishing its report on the working conditions at Rockstar Games during the development of Red Dead Redemption 2, the situation has gotten a lot better. The studio is said to have a "healthier culture overall" and that it is "moving in the right direction". This was welcome news to hear, but one certain point that the internet latched on to was the mention of Grand Theft Auto 6.
In his report, Jason Schreier said: "But there’s a catch: Rockstar’s next big project is still early in development." This makes sense, of course -- the developer only wrapped up work on the story of Arthur Morgan 18 months ago and continues to support Red Dead Online to this day. However, the news lead to Rockstar's GTA franchise trending across Twitter and appeared to upset a lot of fans who were hoping the sixth entry would be coming sooner rather than later. It meant that tweets such as the one below were shared thousands upon thousands of times.

The frustration can be understood to a point. The PlayStation 4 generation has been completely starved of a new instalment in the blockbuster series, with Grand Theft Auto V being a remaster of the PlayStation 3 game. However, it is common knowledge that the entire studio poured its soul into Red Dead Redemption 2, to detrimental effect.
GTA 6 will be a PlayStation 5 game, but it looks like we're going to have to wait a few more years before we see anything of it. Are you hyped for Grand Theft Auto 6? Share your wishlist of features in the comments below.

Gta the g.o.a.t video games.hopefully it takes places in the 1980s or 1990s.i l💖ve retro settings in video games.word up son
You know Rockstar should be more than capable of making more than one game at a time, it's not as if they don't have the funds. On PS3 we got GTAIV and V, alongside Red Dead Redemption, LA Noire and a table tennis game plus some story dlc for a couple of them. Yet PS4 just gets Red Dead Redemption 2 and some online multiplayer as they chase the shark card money
That's fine by me as I've no interest anyway. Vice City was the pinnacle in terms of fun. Hated San Andreas. GTA IV was meh. Had GTA V on PS3 and found it pretty but tedious.
Unless they can come up with an original angle, I'm done with GTA games. Rather have a sequel to L.A. Noire, or something truly original. But I don't think Rockstar can do 'original' any more, which is why we never saw Agent.
I wasn't expecting GTA 6 for a little while anyway. GTAV still sells like hot cakes and the online portion is incredibly popular. Rockstar can take its sweet time.
We, the internet, demand better working conditions and GTA 6 to be a PS5 launch title...
I can understand the frustrations, especially given the release schedules of the past.
2001: GTA III and Max Payne
2002: GTA: Vice City
2003: Midnight Club 2, Manhunt and Max Payne 2
2004: Red Dead Revolver and GTA: San Andreas
2005: Midnight Club 3, The Warriors and GTA: Liberty City Stories
2006: Bully
2007: GTA: Vice City Stories and Manhunt 2
2008: GTA IV and Midnight Club: Los Angeles
2010: Red Dead Redemption
2011: L.A. Noire
2012: Max Payne 3
2013: GTA V and GTA Online
2018: Red Dead Redemption 2
2019: Red Dead Online
I understand a lot more goes into making games today, but outside of a bunch of re-releases and next generation upgrades, the output has massively slowed down.
You can do Bully 2,Red Dead 3,GTA 6, whatever, just give me a "darker" Max Payne and all is well and forgiven of course.
Quality over quantity. Who can blame them? They manage to lay some incredible games and thanks to that I'm currently having a blast on red dead 2.
Also we are bound to have a next gen RTX re-re-release of GTA V that will fly off the shelves.
I wonder what city/period they will choose for GTA6.
@Mergatro1d that comment made me laugh, thanks for saying what I was thinking. I would add that they should have better working conditions AND go back to the office regardless of Covid-19 to work more efficiently AND stop being paid so we can have this as a free launch title.
I stopped reading at the sub header.
@playstation1995 they could do a “retro” title set in 2002 and it would be set further in the past than Vice City was at the time (18 years vs 16). When I realised this recently I’d never felt so old.
I don't know why people thought gta 6 was further along in production. It was only 2 years ago the Houser brothers said they were struggling to come up with a premise for a new gta due to the current political climate and pc culture. So if they hadn't even decided on a direction for the game 2 years ago and have been working on rdr2 and gta online it's not surprising they aren't very far into production of gta 6.
@Glassneedles. Vice city and vice city stories was amazing.the lance dance.man i miss gta vice sity stories on my psp.word up son
I appreciate the amount of content they put into side activities.
I wish more games did that.
@Rhaoulos with their crunch culture it would have made sense to quarantine all their staff in the office to avoid the spread of the virus. They could have then legitimately forced them to finish GTA 6 in time for launch.
Just in case anyone takes me too seriously- virus bad; crunch bad; games good.
@Quintumply Right there with you. GTA6 is not something I think about often cause I'm still not bored with GTA5 or RDR2. Some people would cry R* should release more games and would still cry if R* did, and the games started feeling more of the same with different skins like Ubisoft games. You just can't win with some folk. I'd rather they take their sweet time.
I still think we'll get a RDR remaster in the meantime. A large proportion of the assets are right there in RDR2, and there's been plenty of rumours, so I could see a smallish side team being at work on it right now.
Honestly, I think I'm the only person in the world who didn't like gta 5. I didn't even meet Trevor before giving up and the online didn't draw me in either. Loved 4, 3, Vice City, 2, London and 1 (never played San Andreas though) but 5 just didn't do anything for me 🤷♂️
Why make it soon and interfere with GTAV sales?
It's funny people think it's going to be called GTA6 when it's clearly going to be called GTA Online 2... 😒
I don't mind so much when it releases as I know it will be worth the wait. If I had one wish though it would be gta UK
I believe R* got fat and complacent from the huge success of GTA 5. RDR2 was a massive project but R* has been nothing short of mysteriously lackadaisical in fixing the online play of RDR2.
So what is R* working on? Maybe i do not care as much as i once did. I want a new GTA like game, open world sand box, but maybe some new, not yet fat, talented organization could provide that game.
@carlos82
Its all about the shark cards now. Dont be surprised if gta 6 finds a way to put them in the story mode
You’ll probably find GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas all released in so few years because they used the same engine, albeit modified. This game will use either RDR2 or a new engine, probably leaning towards a new one given the change in gen. It’s still nonsense to take this long though, it’s practically like waiting for The Last Guardian at this point.
I doubt it's in early development when they were doing voice acting for it years ago
Guess I will be buying a PS5 to play the new GTA just as I did when I got my PS4
Rockstar has become the kind of company that would be perfect for one of their own in game jokes. No single player DLC for either GTA V nor RedDead2. This is all about the money now
@nookie_egg you are not alone. I think they have started to fall into the trap of bigger map = more fun. But i dont think the story was as interesting as previous releases. And i miss being able to learn - and love - condensed maps like liberty city (gta3 not 4), and vice city
@Rob_230 yeah I agree with you. Don't get me wrong it was technically impressive and having 3 mains is no mean feat. But yeah cruising around in early gta's was just awesome, finding that one stretch of road you could almost endlessly accelerate.
GTA fans have never waited for that long for a new version of GTA and their reaction is very obvious. I personally expected GTA 6 to be released maximum by 2018 but it is still 2 years more than what I expected and with this latest statement I am not seeing GTA 6 coming in at least next couple of years. Hopefully I will be wrong this time as well But GTA 5 after all these years in the business is still enjoying a huge popularity among gamers from all over the world. The game has been one of the most financially successful entertainment products of all time, with about $6 billion in worldwide revenue and there are more than 120 million copies shipped worldwide since its release in 2013 and there would be many players who are playing the game using pirated copies of the game so the actually number of GTA V players in the world should be much more than 120 million. With Sony and Microsoft set to release their new consoles PlayStation5 and Xbox Series X by the end of this year, a lot of GTA 5 players are worried, whether they would be able to play GTA 5 on these new consoles. Following is an excellent guide on what to expect with PS5 and Xbox Series X regarding the compatibility and support for GTA V.

I expect either GTA Online as a free game but you can just play the online portion on next gen, unless they know no bounds and do a release of 5 again for next gen with 60fps+ guaranteed
@Pete_Stooge I'm right for the whole comment. Because while I'd never even consider hurting people in real life, I enjoy mass murder sprees is Rockstars' games
This is very disappointing news. Last time, GTA V came out after 5 years of GTA IV release. This time, it's already 7 years and the GTA VI is still not out. On top of it, they are saying it's still in early development. Come on man. You got to be kidding. GTA VI should release in 2021. Furthermore is not looking good.
GTA and RDR take your time with it. For me its nothing i really loved Vice City but GTA 4 the last one i was terrible and RDR i just dont care about that one. But if you played one GTA you played them all. Atleast that my opinion i loved the first Manhunt though.
useless, both Rockstar and Bethesda not releasing full Elder Scrolls or GTA games this entire gen, what an absolute waste
RD2 is a game of such epic scale and magnitude that I can see why it absorbed so much time. That being said I'm right there with a few who have mentioned drop from last gen to this, two gtas, la noir, max Payne 3, red dead. Golden time for rockstar games (though San Andrea's is best, fight me if you dont agree)
rubbish the game started when 5 finished! really feeling Disappointed in my Favorite Developer the way story DLC was just ignored on 5. I have 0% interest in GTA Online. I hope GTA 6 Story DLC is part of the development map Rockstar.
It takes too long to show us something, first Bethesda with Elder Scrolls 6 and now the same thing with Rockstar and GTA. Regarding other Rockstar games, GTA online... never played that! And RDR2 is a great game but it's a time-waster and a little bit boring compared to the GTA franchise. So if you ask me Rockstar didn't do anything for me in the last 7 years!
@mini_piekarnik Online gaming, DLC's... In other words money milk machines. That is what killed the classic game production, earlier they would really try to impress and more important to keep their customers. Now, they don't care about the quality of their product, just about money. Diablo 3 is a good example, after Diablo 2 they purposely pushed cartoony and colorful graphics. Then after they milked money from everyone they showed D4, dark and realistic Diablo we expected with D3.
