Assassin's Creed Odyssey allowed you to play as either a male or female character for the first time in the series when it launched a couple of years ago, and thankfully, the next instalment will be bringing that widely-requested feature back. Confirmed via a Ubisoft press release, Assassin's Creed Valhalla will allow you to play as either a male or a female Viking.
No matter which gender you choose, you will take up the name of Eivor. You'll be able to customise their hair, tattoos, war paint, and gear as well as influence political and combat decisions. Dialogue choices will also make a comeback -- choosing between protecting your clan's home and the future. Unfortunately, Ubisoft hasn't shared what the female protagonist looks like just yet, but we're happy in the fact that we will be able to play as a woman once more with Assassin's Creed Valhalla. In the meantime, check out the male Viking character model below.

“But there were no female Vikings”
@kyleforrester87
But yes it was. When the man was sick the wife had to follow on pillage or they lose their spot in the raiding parties. Don't believe the "american/hollywood"-view of vikings.
Cool. I actually posted not long ago in another article that I wanted a female option and customisation.
@Zeke68 you’ll be telling me they rode T-rex’s next, a likely story!
@kyleforrester87 If she's half as hot as Kassandra who cares
@Zeke68 Note the quote marks; he's predicting the stupid complaints that people are gonna make, I'd say.
And yeah, of course they rode tyrannosaurs - how else could they have conquered us Brits?
cool I play woman vikings more fun
@Icey664 😂
no non-binary genders, wtf is this?? its time to get on resettera and twitter to get these developers to do the right thing!
Great news, I will be playing as a female character.
It's crazy when people get made at having options.
@kyleforrester87
No T-rex but noone wanted to lose the familyprivilige (spelling?) to join the raid so the wife had to follow. They mostly had to stand guard at the boats and so on, but still, they had to take their mans place or their family would lose out for the next in line. Believe it or not, but that was how they lived. And 90% of the vikings was actually farmers.. Who could believe that?
@Zeke68 where did we go wrong eh? Where did we go wrong...
@kyleforrester87
Probably me, tired after having some guys fixing my roof and hammering away all day. Heads spinning lol..
/Stay safe man
Excellent. As always when given the choice, I'll be playing as a female.
Fair enough. The trailer does make it seem like the male character is canon but they did such a great job with Kassandra I have faith it will work.
Good idea to improve the customisation of your character, more options are never a bad thing.
I'm looking forward to this.
I think they may of teased her in the boat scene in the background - looks similar to the replica in collectors edition . Definitely playing female as always
Haven't bought a single AC game, yet but this reminds me of History Channel's Viking tv series which I liked. I'm actually looking forward to seeing some gameplay.
@get2sammyb i'm gonna be playing as that guy in the picture, he looks awesome
besides i played Kassandra in Odyssey and i like to switch it up when given the option, keeps things fresher that way
I will be playing as the male character.like in every game that gives you a choice.word up son
Protagonist looks like Ragnar and his name sounds like Ivar.
@thefirst Malaka!
Since when is more choice a bad thing? Play as the male character if you want but Kassandra was awesome and was definitely the better character to play as in Odyssey.
I just want to know which character is canon. If it's the man I'll be buying this game, if it's the woman I likely won't be. Playing as a non canon character bothered me last time and playing as a woman warrior in a game series that was supposed to be based in history bothers me far more.
For people saying female Vikings are not a thing. The females were call shield maidens. The women were widely known as fearsome fighters because there speed was unmatched.
Shieldmaidens are not what shows like Vikings portray them to be, scientific evidence suggests that they were unlikely to exist or very rare at most. They are exaggerated by modern feminists and the film industry (same thing). There's also the fact that any shieldmaidens wouldn't of been the best or even close to the best on the field of battle, this I know from common sense as men are physically stronger and more mentally suitable for combat.
Zero interest in it unless it's a documentary and they consulted all the leading scholars in the field. Video games are supposed to be accurate.
Yes, definitely playing as the woman. It's nice to see a change of non-bearded and bearded bloke in video games. Kass was the highlight of Odyssey.
Time to play with KASS 2.0! This gets better by the sec 😃
Im not happy with it as I believe it’s make the vocal dialogue uneven.
I’d much rather they pick a person, make or female and build the game around that person.
I like the choice, but Odyssey was clearly meant to be played as Kassandra. I have noticed that as I've been playing as Alexios. I with rather them decide which one they want you to be and stick with it.
Zero desire to play as the female. Same as odyssey. Alexios was excellent, wise cracking and flamboyant. A female viking lol
@M123 2/3 of all odyssey players played as Alexios. This franchise will never be a female only protagonist. Thank God
"Assassin's Creed Odyssey allowed you to play as either a male or female character for the first time in the series when it launched a couple of years ago"
I may be misremembering, but didn't Syndicate do that first?
@Dreman99 Where did you get those numbers from?
And thanking God? Wtf are you on?!
@ApostateMage that because you have never played with a women on real life?
I think it's Funny how many dude will say oh I'm playing with the women.. That's only because you ain't played with a women in real.
Can it be a gender neutral character? That seems to be all the rage these days
Sigh.
Some of the comments on here.
You give gamers a bad name.
History is wrong. All Vikings were female... That's it, I'm stepping out.
@Dreman99 I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I would have restarted as her if I knew she was obviously supposed to be the main character if I wasn't so far into the game when I figured it out. If they want the main character to be a woman then make it a woman. Don't shoehorn a male character into it to appease people who refuse to play as a female characters for some insane reason. Once I beat the game I'm going to replay it as her so I can enjoy it as it was supposed to be.
@kyleforrester87 well according to the collectors addition, the female protagonist looks exactly half as hot as Kassandra 😂
@kyleforrester87
Great... Now I'm hoping we can ride a T-Rex in AC Valhalla. Stop selling us all those dreams!
I'll be playing as a male. Suits the setting better
Im playing as a woman why because i want to. 😆
@Tha_Likely_Lad Ok which game has a genderneutral lead tell i would really like to know. I think the people who complain about are a little upset that people like to have a choice.
@Dreman99 So 1/3 played as a female when they had the choice i think the developer and publisher would disagree with you. There is a big audience who probably would not mind playing as a female character.
With Syndicate Evie was the better option for me i thought she was the better character of the two.
And if a female character is written good and she has a good voice actress why would it even be a problem.
Nariko from Heavenly Sword was brilliant i liked her more then the original Kratos. The character design was great i loved the voice and character also had a great story.
@Thejoker0801 You are sad or insecure im not sure yet.
@Orpheus79V Even longer ago than Syndicate - I remember many years ago playing the AC3 spin off game, Liberation as Aveline (though I'm a big AC fan tbf so many probably missed that one). The author maybe meant Odyssey was the first game that you get to choose a gender to play for an entire mainline entry, but I think a lot of us ended up playing as Evie in Syndicate all the time except for the few Jacob mandatory missions, because he was just such a buffoon! 😉
Loved playing as Kassandra in Odyssey (and trying to get jiggy with anything that moved, including Alkibiades' goats), so if the only difference is physical appearance here then will likely play as the chick in Valhalla too! So exciting to be able to put this on my 2020 list after sadly having to remove TLOU2 recently
@kyleforrester87 Come on mate, you seriously think that LOL.. than please explain to me about Shield Maidens then if female vikings dont exist
@Now-Let-Me-Say01 Shieldmaidens, lol... only the feeble mind fall for the sjw brain washing.
@Dreman99 You know female Vikings were a thing right? You do watch the show. Also Kassandra is the canon lead.
@Shanae91 figment of your imagination.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate did it first?
Hey I love the assassins creed series along with its history but I wish they did a new assassins creed in either Ancient Rome or the future like 2045. I know that there has already been a assassins creed in Ancient Rome but I think it could use a remake with different story line.
@WallyWest yes I know she was, but I enjoyed Alexios much more. And since two-thirds of all players played as alexios, that's more important to Ubisoft then who the Canon character is.
Noone is mad about this. Kotaku is pushing that outrage narrative for clicks.
