Movie distributors are aggressively responding to the coronavirus crisis in ways which could change the face of cinema forever. After the early digital release of films such as Emma and The Invisible Man, now Paramount has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog will be available on digital platforms such as the PlayStation Store from 31st March.
This is an unprecedented move, as the adaptation’s cinematic run hasn’t technically ended yet, but with theatres closed the organisation hopes to capitalise on the free time of people staying at home. A DVD and Blu-ray release will follow on 19th May – assuming all of this madness is behind us by then, of course.
Other films such as Birds of Prey and Onward have also been brought forward, and it’ll be interesting whether this changes movie business models moving forwards. Sonic the Hedgehog, for what it’s worth, was a gigantic hit at the box office, raking in $306 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing video game film of all time in North America.

I’m kinda happy about this as it pertains to movies coming to home platforms. I was gonna see The Invisible Man with my son and it would’ve been at least $60 after tickets/food. Now it’ll be a $20 purchase and the food is already stocked. If we’d not already seen Sonic I’d have purchased it as well.
Brilliant idea, I didn't get chance to see this in the cinema so I'll be looking forward to watching this very soon
I'd be happy with a choice of home/cinema going forward. I shouldnt be forced to sit in a crowded cinema to watch a new movie. Im getting too old for that.
I hear they are doing this with the new Trolls movie as well. Instead of putting it back they are just skipping the cinema completely and releasing it to stream. Its a great idea as i can never be bothered going to the cinema and 60 quid (after beverages) to watch a movie. Id much rather just kick back with the family in comfort and watch a film.
@Loftimus they’re not really forcing you though. 🤷🏾♂️
3 months you’ll be able to see them at home. But, I too, would love for films to release at home and in the theatre at the same time. Though it would kill the movie theatre industry.
@AhmadSumadi well if i want to watch films on release then yes, i am forced to watch it at a cinema as there is no where else to watch it in that time.
@Loftimus No one is forcing you to sit in a crowded cinema. Either wait a few months until the crowd has died down, or wait until it available on digital or blu-ray.
Ive already defined my use of the word forced. I'd have thought people would have bigger things to worry about right now.
I like the idea of spending the money for a movie on a digital release instead of spending it at the cinema, but many movies may not make back their production costs. It's a tough situation, but then again, it could spark huge digital sales that counter it. But I feel like a $250 million dollar movie will less likely be made.
@Gravity_Bear Many a great movie tanked at the box office but when it was released to video back in the day it became a success. I would even go further by saying that most of my favourite films have performed terribly at the box office.
My favourite two films are Leon and there will be blood.
@darksoul77 That's true. I know Firefly's Serenity, was a box office disappointment, but it ranks high on imdb and must have had a much better home release. It's a movie I thoroughly enjoyed.
@Loftimus Definition of forced. 1.compelled by force or necessity ( involuntary) 2. done or produced with effort, exertion or pressure. You're voluntarily seeing movies in theaters do to your inability to have patience ( that's your fault not the theater's). Lets not make up our own definitions to words when they are already documented for you to easily look up..
@Gravity_Bear serenity is very underrated I wonder what the current starwars trilogy would be like if it was half as good as serenity.
The dialogue is so good and funny it puts the majority of comedy's and drama's to shame if it wasn't a Sci Fi it would have won more awards.
Not interested in Sonic but may take advantage of other films that come to home viewing early.
@youreyesonly00 like i said, you really should be worried about bigger things right now.... But here we go.
Compelled by necessity.
necessity
/nɪˈsɛsɪti/
Learn to pronounce
noun
1.
the state or fact of being required.
"the necessity of providing parental guidance"
Similar:
essential requirement

indispensable thing/item

necessary
fundamental
basic
sine qua non
desideratum
indispensability
need
needfulness
2.
an indispensable thing.
"a good book is a necessity when travelling".
I "need" to see a new movie (just like the definition above needs a book on a train ride) that i cannot see anywhere else. Am i compelled by necessity to go to the cinema?
It's going to kill cinemas which I'm not happy about at all. It's fun to watch at home but the cinema was always a cool to go as well especially with some friends. A lot of cool places like cinemas are going to be gone and unfortunately on the human side a lot of jobs gone too.
@AhmadSumadi
I was going to do the same thing (The Invisible Man). It would have been me an my spouse. I have Cinemark's movie pass program, so the tickets would run the cost of my subscription...$9.76 ($8.99, but taxes) x 2 for two "free" passes, plus the large popcorn and coke combo for $12 something with my pass discount. That's almost $12 more...I didn't do the math on our home snacks, but $12 would buy a lot of those.
I like that companies are doing this. We bought Onward last night and had a great night at home watching it. Our son is three so it’s hard to get to the movies at a time where very few people are there, so we aren’t “those” parents. We could have waited for it to drop on Disney+, but we didn’t mind supporting them for the $20 after releasing it early.
Life will change after this. Remember 9/11? Things changed then. They'll change now.
@lacerz you couldn’t be more right. This is going to have severe consequences. Let’s just hope we can find some semblance of normality after all of this is said and done.
@darksoul77 It would have been awesome to see the full vision of what it was meant to be. I think I read Firefly was going to be 7 seasons. Everything worked nicely with the movie and the TV series, the cast and story were so good. Sad that there isn't any more.
I've enjoyed Luc Besson movies, including Leon.
@Loftimus The definition of forced still holds, no matter how much you try to shuffle around it. Good day..
Lol this comment section cracks me up.
@youreyesonly00 Force is a strong word but you can see where @Loftimus is coming from, they are not giving him/her much choice when a new movie is only available to watch in the cinemas.
Anyhow I hope this bucks the trend and that we all have the option to watch new movie releases at home as well as the cinema (for those who still want the cinematic experience/atmosphere) I just think if movies released for home viewing on the same day as cinemas then I can see movies generating a lot more net profit. We live at a time where the whole world evolves around digital technology, I can certainly see a lot of cinemas closing in the future when people can just watch new movies in the comfort of their home at anytime they want. It’s just a lot more convenient for people and makes sense for everybody, customers, movie distributors etc.
@Loftimus @youreyesonly00 Come on, I'm sure we can debate without saying horrible things to each other. Please try to be respectful even if someone disagrees.
A welcome move. Though personally, I'll still wait for it to hit Netflix rather than buy it or pay for a rental.
Haven't been to a cinema in 15+ years, and will never go again. The "big screen" adds nothing to the experience of a movie as far as I'm concerned, and I'd much rather watch at home at a comfortable volume and with the ability to pause if I need to.
The lack of people using their phones, chewing loudly, getting up for the loo, and knocking the back of your seat are all major improvements to seeing a movie in a cinema.
@ShogunRok Nothing horrible was said..
