It has happened -- that pesky goose has gone and won itself a Game of the Year award, justifying all of its actions and mischief in the process! That's right, Untitled Goose Game was the surprise recipient of the D.I.C.E. Awards' top gong last night as it crowned and celebrated what was best in video games for the year of 2019.
The game also took first place in the Outstanding Achievement in Character and Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game categories, but it was the Game of the Year award which surprised the developer the most. House House took to Twitter to say: "This is such an incredible, surreal honour. We regrettably couldn't make it to D.I.C.E. in person, and we had a hard time recording an acceptance video because (looking at the other nominees) it was impossible to imagine actually winning. We're blown away."
Untitled Goose Game joins the ranks of winners which includes Sony's God of War, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Overwatch, Fallout 4, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. The D.I.C.E Awards are put together and voted on by video game industry professionals, so you can understand how prestigious of an award Game of the Year quickly becomes.

The power of memes I guess
Simply ridiculous, but k.
Seriously? What a joke
Imagine working so hard to create such amazing and creative experiences like Death Stranding, Sekiro, Resident Evil 2 etc. just to lose to a novelty meme game.
This is why I don't value DICE Awards.
I can't take these awards seriously after RDR2 was omitted from so many deserved categories in 2018.
a playable meme does not make for a rightfull GOTY .
sekiro, resi 2 remake, death stranding, or smaller gems like a plaque tale all had to pass up for this?
Turrible. Slap in the face to a LOT of devs
Even House House knows it's BS.
"Outstanding Achievement in Character 🏆
Outstanding Achievement for an Independent Game 🏆
Game of the Year (????!!!) 🏆
again: this is extremely weird"
What an embarrassing comments section. Come on guys, seriously?
@LiamCroft Come on mate, it's a novelty game. The sort that's fun for ten minutes and then never played again.
Give me Days Gone any day of the week. 😉
@Col_McCafferty Just because it's not your typical AAA game, doesn't mean it does not deserve the Game of the Year award.
And it's voted for by people IN the industry?!
They should be named and shamed and never allowed to play another game ever again.
I'm kind of joking but only kind of.
@LiamCroft I guess you voted for it then.
Seriously you couldn't pay me to play it. I reckon there will be stuff created through 'Dreams' that will blow this goose nonsense out of the park.
@LiamCroft Truth hurts I guess.
@LiamCroft last year had alot of good AAA and indie games. Im not saying it doesnt deserve recognition its a fun game with a simple premise. However telling me people in the industry think its better than indie games like Disco Elysium or AAA like Resident Evil 2 is a bit much lol
@LiamCroft Also, why are our comments embarrassing?
That's a tad insulting. We're passionate gamers and this novelty game doesn't do anything for us.
If you enjoyed the game that's fine but GOTY? Really? Makes 2019 look like a really poor year for games.
@LiamCroft "Just because it's not your typical AAA game, doesn't mean it does not deserve the Game of the Year award."
So as a game is nowhere near it's peers in terms of graphical fidelity, story telling, gameplay mechanics, voice acting, gameplay variety or innovation it deserves the award out of sympathy?
Makes sense Liam.
@DonJorginho I didn’t vote for these awards so I don’t know people’s reasonings. There are some incredibly reductive comments in here, however.
Can’t you just be happy that a game which took the world by storm won a nice award instead for moaning about the fact your favourite game didn’t win? 😂
@LiamCroft less about our fave game not winning and more about the idea that there are more deserved titles that should have won.
@LiamCroft This isn't about favourites, as someone who works for a gaming publication you should know more than most when it comes to what is deemed a GOTY.
Untitled Goose Game was a fun experience and a novelty game, but that is it, if it wasn't for the memes and youtube videos this game would had faded into obscurity.
You can't honestly tell me with a straight face it does narrative better than Death Stranding, atmosphere better than Resident Evil 2, visuals better than Sekiro, open ended game design better than The Outer Worlds, or the innovation that Disco Elysium brought to the industry.
I am happy for the team behind UGG as it is always nice to win something, but if we are going to act like adults we can all agree that UGG wasn't even deserving to be nominated, let alone win.
@LiamCroft it has plenty of awards if i remember correctly lol i mean it is nice it won an award and i usually dont pay much attention to awards as i like what i like but this just seems like a weird one for GOTY is all. Its like the Heath Ledger Joker meme. Death stranding wins GOTY no one bats an eye, Untitled Goose Game wins and everyone loses their minds lol
@LiamCroft You seem very defensive about this. In all honesty I don't really take awards that seriously nor metacritic ratings but I refuse to accept that this goose stuff is better than any of the following.
Death Stranding, Resi 2, Control, Days Gone, Fallen Order, Outer Worlds, Sekiro and many others
What's going to win GOTY for 2020? A mobile phone game? Cluedo? Pick up sticks?
What a joke.
Never looked at it. Is it a ps4 game? Looks and sounds like something I'd find in an app store 🤷♂️
I obviously don't think Untitled Goose Game is Game of the Year, but I think some of you are being a bit reductive.
This game made a massive footprint on the industry, so while I don't think it's the best of 2019 by any stretch, it's as eligible as any other title.
@DonJorginho If Untitled Goose Game is the game which resonated with someone the most, it doesn't really matter if another title did a particular thing better.
@LiamCroft I don't see how it resonated more with people than all the other titles that released in 2019 but each to their own.
@Riparcade2 That is because it more or less is that.
Honestly, with all of the amazing indies that release every year, it annoys me to no end that this one meme'd its way to the top of the pile the way it did.
@Ralizah Disco Elysium deserved it way more than Untitled Meme Joke.
@get2sammyb i had a look at all the winners and nominees and honestly i agree with majority of them. I think mario kart tour winning best driving game was my biggest issue but alot of love for Control which I can get behind.
Untitled Goose game beat Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium, Control and Death Stranding. All of those are marmite games to be fair. You really love them or really hate them. I think we can all agree that we need to see the Goose with the award in its beak running from the protagonists of the nominees lol
@Danloaded Stuff that is divisive is often more interesting than that which is universally praised, look at Joker for example.
Goose is a novelty game. It's insulting to the rest of the gaming industry that this won GOTY. In my opinion anyway.
Wild goose for game I understand. But white goose???
@Col_McCafferty i did enjoy Joker lol
While id agree its a novelty game like Donut County a few years ago people were complaining indie games werent even being nominated for awards.
@Col_McCafferty Yes, well done! YOUR opinion! You're welcome to express it, but please stop preaching it as fact so aggressively trying to put people down who don't think the same way as you in the process. The amount of negativity you've spread in this comment section is nothing but sad.
I guess you're a fan of the game as well. Interesting.
Also, the overall consensus is it's a bit of a joke this won GOTY but whatever, I guess I'm the only one that thinks this way.
@LiamCroft Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5, Sekiro, Contol, Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Maker 2, Jedi Fallen Order, The Outer Worlds, Death Stranding. Are you saying that Goose game is better than all of them? Even on the indie front I thought Blazing Chrome was a much better game, oh and Bloodstained
@Neolit Now that is what I call GOTY
@LiamCroft Guinness Book of Records the best endings looks them up.
I wasn't expecting all this indignation in the comments. I've yet to play the goose game but it looks very entertaining and different.
Why are people so upset over this? Bad experience with a goose while having a picnic by the river? Certainly no laughing matter. Let me know which goose it was and I'll endeavor to have words with them.
@LieutenantFatman I think if you look at the game it does not do anything esspecially great. Graphics, storywise, gameplay nobody saying its a terrible game i think but its nothing special. Its like putting the Shawshank against the worst movie you can think off and letting them win the Oscar.
I see your point. And even worse it celebrates geese misbehaving, so I think I can see why you used the word worst. Very apt.
What's next? A game where a frog tries to dodge traffic while it crosses a busy road, putting the poor drivers in danger? Let's hope not.
@LieutenantFatman We're not upset, we just don't agree.
The above write-up states this is a prestigious award but their choice of GOTY suggests otherwise.
Control, Sekiro, DMC5, Resi 2, Death Stranding, Outer Wilds, Outer Worlds if ANY if these games had won most of us wouldn't have a problem with it even if it wasn't our choice.
But a game about a goose getting up to some mischief?!
Nah, nor for me.
I remember being slightly annoyed in 2018 when RDR2 was overlooked by many in favour of God of War. Then I played God of War and whilst I still preferred RDR2 I could understand why God of War won so many awards.
But not this goose nonsense, it's just not cricket my old chum.
@get2sammyb - "This game made a massive footprint on the industry"
That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it? Unless I missed something, the game's only achievement was being the biggest meme of 2019, and unlike say Fortnite, is unlikely to be remembered once the fad dies down in a year or two. And to be fair, there's nothing wrong with that, but at the end of the day, being a particularly popular fad isn't the same as having an impact on the industry/medium. For a good comparison, compare this game to PubG; admittedly, a game I don't really care for, but one that made it's mark by popularising the Battle Royale genre. UGG, from what I understand, doesn't have anything similar, it's just a running joke that got really popular.
@Neolit - To be fair, that name choice was likely deliberate as part of the joke, and was probably the right choice to make imo.
@JoeBlogs - Pretty much.
@JoeBlogs Now you're being silly.
I commend you for not being upset, not worth losing sleep over this sort of thing. I do understand the argument that there are considerably more complex and involved games out there that would be the more obvious choice for the bigger awards.
But I often find the most fun I have is with the smaller indie games, and sometimes a short indie experience will stay with me much more than a long campaign from a big budget triple A game, so it does please me to see them not being overlooked for this sort of thing.
Controversial perhaps, but it does generate some interesting discussion.
@JoeBlogs I don't need to play it in order to know that's it's not my thing. I'm sure its a fun little game for all of ten minutes but i prefer big AAA titles that I can sink tens if not hundreds of hours into.
Very dangerous line of thinking that, stating that people can't have an opinion on a game unless they have played it. You really want to go down that route?
Actually it's more.like.Snakes on a Plane winning Best Picture at the Oscars. That's was a novelty film that was funny for all of five minutes.
Let's be honest here, nobody saw this coming and that's because nobody thought this game was GOTY.
It seems some on here loved the game or are maybe bored this Friday and are deliberately choosing to hold a contrary view. I'm bored of this debate now so feel free to bother someone else.
Why are people not happy anyway?
It's like when reviews give 10 to a crappy game and 3 to Days Gone 😀
I'm happy to see them destroy their credibility or in this case, confirm they do their own thing. Nothing to do with gamers. Like the Oscars praising some random stuff. Who cares? Haha
@JoeBlogs No, I've said my piece and now I'm bored and wish to move on.
I'll just say one last thing. I predict D.I.C.E. will pick a much more credible choice as GOTY for 2020.
Just stating my opinion, not arguing that anyone should be lynched over this. It's only a gaming award, not that important in the grand scheme of things.
You can climb down from your pedestal now mate.
@ApostateMage Nothing by Rockstar deserve any more attention than a pile of **** in the desert would.
As for the topic at hand, that's ******* sad. A game that encourages bullying not only became a cultural phenomenon, but won this award. No "gamer" with any integrity would have ever played this, and nobody of any intelligence would find it interesting, hilarious, or fun. This is absolutely ******* sad and anyone who disagrees is worthless.
Gotta agree with the rest and while I don't dislike the goose or think it's a bad game I don't think is fitted for GOTY or maybe this just proves how bad last year was
It's a fun little game, very charming and a nice tonal change from bigger name titles, but I gotta say this is not my personal pick of last year, not by a longshot.
Still, congratulations to House House. There is charm and beauty to it.
It's like a 5 second gif winning an Oscar for best movie over Parasite or The Irishman.
@Nintyfan And some on here told me to lighten up.
@Nintyfan Well aren't you an angry and potty mouthed little fellow.
I thought this was joke, so I didn't comment, but since it isn't I have to say:
This is infinitely more hilarious for many many different reasons.
Congrats to House House.
At the same time though...
Imagine caring at all about award shows? Hahahaha
LOL Now that is a joke.
@Nintyfan Watch the language.
@ApostateMage That just proves how overrated and dull RDR2 is. All of these reviewers who gave it perfect scores could not even name anything it did that was great LOL. Omitting it was the best thing they did.
@Nintyfan Think you need a timeout pal.
Just no, goose game is a cool indie game but not game of the year material.
