Sonic the Hedgehog’s cinematic adaptation may have lost its rings when it was mauled by critics, but it’s clawed them back with a bombastic Box Office result. Hollywood Reporter reckons that the Blue Blur pulled in $57 million in the United States during its opening weekend, which is $3 million higher than Detective Pikachu’s denut. It means that SEGA’s mascot now holds the record for the launch of a video game film.
Proceedings get even more positive for distributor Paramount Pictures when you factor in that $68 million is projected for the full four-day holiday weekend in America, which includes President’s Day on 17th February. Overall, estimates peg the flick’s global opening at around $100 million through Sunday, which is a sum not to be sniffed at. With a reported budget of $87 million, we imagine this is going to turn a tidy profit when all’s said and done.

I'm glad it did well, as it was surprisingly good. Plus the after credits set up exciting possibilities for a sequel with that appearance.
Niceee. Was going to see it yesterday, but the other half dragged me to see Bad Boys again.
Will try to to see it this weekend. Heard great things about it.
Sonic Adventure 3 when SEGA?!
Now I'm going to have to watch it just to see for myself how it compares to Detective Pikachu which was really good.
On disc from my library in 3-6 months.
I wouldn’t say a 63 percent on RT is getting “mauled”
It was good for a kid movie. I didnt fall asleep.
I think the backlash about the first trailer saved it.
Sonic look is everything.
Edit
Again more proof critics/reviews are irrelevant nowadays.
That could buy a lot of chilli dogs...
Genesis does... what nintendon't
I'll be going to see it in the next day or two. Not expecting much but it won't be as bad as the critics said either. Seems it respects the source material and the people working on it did take the time and money to re-design Sonic after fans voiced their dislike. I want to support studios that actually give a damn about fans rather than crapping on them and screaming 'you're toxic!' like most idiots in Hollywood do these days.
@dark_knightmare2 Yeah, I think they're trying to force something there that just isn't the case.
Took my son to see it today. We both absolutely loved it. Jim Carrey if excellent and Sonic is (finally) realised perfectly. Great fun if you have kids.
@dark_knightmare2 agreed. It reviewed alot better than expected yet all media seems to say it was savaged or mauled by critics despite it being mixed at best. Still going to see it for classic jim carey and because of respect to the team who redid the CG
I saw the Sonic movie with my Aunt last Sunday and loved every moment, super hyped and can't wait to see the sequel!
Sidenote, I will be greatly devastated if the sequel is canned.
@tameshiyaku Because everyone knows the Pokemon IP belongs to Nintendo and definitely not to Game Freak
