Sonic the Hedgehog Movie 1

Sonic the Hedgehog’s cinematic adaptation may have lost its rings when it was mauled by critics, but it’s clawed them back with a bombastic Box Office result. Hollywood Reporter reckons that the Blue Blur pulled in $57 million in the United States during its opening weekend, which is $3 million higher than Detective Pikachu’s denut. It means that SEGA’s mascot now holds the record for the launch of a video game film.

Proceedings get even more positive for distributor Paramount Pictures when you factor in that $68 million is projected for the full four-day holiday weekend in America, which includes President’s Day on 17th February. Overall, estimates peg the flick’s global opening at around $100 million through Sunday, which is a sum not to be sniffed at. With a reported budget of $87 million, we imagine this is going to turn a tidy profit when all’s said and done.
