How has no one thought of this before? Generally, the DualShock 4’s on-board speaker has been ignored, but Zombie Army 4: Dead War puts the feature to terrific use by playing unsettling messages when you pause. As illustrated in the video above – and corroborated by our reviewer, Liam Croft – the PlayStation 4’s controller will laugh and whisper the words “play with me” while you’re AFK.
This is a fantastic idea, and we can certainly see it inducing a few panic-stricken moments in living rooms around the world. What are your favourite uses of the DS4’s speaker? Try not to spook us in the comments section below.

The onboard speaker has been sorely underused. Lou in Death Stranding was another great use for it, as were the recordings in The Order.
Wow thats creepy. Im really surprised other games haven't employed similar techniques!
I swear ive played something over the past couple of years that used the dualshocks speaker well. Maybe it was until dawn?
Haha! That's a great idea.
The a test game I have that uses the speaker is Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor for comms from your allies.
I like the speaker and light bar being used well.
Neat little idea, this. I don't own Zombie Army 4 but this would've freaked me out
My fav is in transistor, you can set the sword voice to speaker rather than tv, it feels like you're playing/attacking enemies with talking sword
The same thing occurs in Zombie Army Trilogy ... it’s quite unsettling the first time you hear it!
is it just me or anyone else tempted put it in kids room when they go bed lol
Woefully underused feature. My favourite example is probably the beeping of the motion detector in Alien: Isolation. So simple but so effective.
Amazing. Love the idea.
It's been good in a few games where a voice coming in over the radio has played through the controller.
Doesn’t PT do this?
I love death stranding baby noises really great and f1 🏎 great use there 👍
Sounds neat. My main issue with the DS4 speaker is I use a surround sound headset, and have everything down through there. It sounds kinda neat with these features, but never use my TV for sound anymore when I’m playing a game.
This is like the old Eternal Darkness sanity effects.
@Gumbopudding I was going to say the same, except the eternal darkness tricks were better than this!
Can't believe no-one has mentioned Cel Damage with the character's comedy catch phrases coming through the controller speaker. Also, Blaze Rush.
The horn in NBA 2K
My first experience was back on GTAV and it scared the sh*t out of me! I hadn’t realised the DS4 had an inbuilt speaker. The in-game phone rang and it was in my hands and then on answering the voice was right there and I was like “What’s happening?!”. Pretty good use of it in GTA I’d say. Not experienced it much since. You’d think they’d have got it into RDR2 somehow. Maybe gun cocking/reloading or skinning/crafting noises.
