If last year’s MediEvil remaster didn’t fully satisfy your horror-tinged hop-and-pop itch, then upcoming 3D platformer Pumpkin Jack may do the trick. Officially billed as for “fans of Jak & Daxter”, the collaboration between publisher Headup Games and developer Nicolas Meyssonnier will find you “engaging in an epic battle of evil against good as you jump, dodge, and carve your way through challenging enemies and daunting puzzles”.

Judging from the trailer embedded above, this looks as old-school as platformers come, with colourful environments to explore and tons of magic items to utilise. Don’t expect this one to drop until around Halloween, but if you’re desperate to try out a demo, Steam will let you run through a level or two right now.

This just makes me want a remaster of Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge.
@Deadhunter I'm still waiting on Nightmare Creatures... but I suppose that was The Order: 1886!
I have to double check these arent the latest "Built in Dreams" games - looking at the quality of some of those 3D platformers I wonder if games like this can make any money?
The Dark Souls of MediEvil.
@rockertherockgod I think there's a market for this.
@get2sammyb i hope so as I love 3D platformers, but the quality of ones I've seen in Dreams look as good as this. I think the question I want to see discussed is will Dreams kill Indie development on PS4?
I have a hard-on for pumkin-headed characters, so this is definitely going to my watch list.
@get2sammyb As someone who still considers the original Jak & Daxter to be my all time favorite game, I'm nto sure this dev has ever actually played Jak & Daxter. If you did't mention it in the title it never would have crossed my mind. They have the same article on NL an didn't even click on it.
I'm not blaming you for putting it in the title, I read the article, but I just dont' see the silky smoothness that is Jak & Daxter. And if he doesn't have a wise-cracking sidekick, Daxter's comments upon death are a big part of the game's charm, then it just isn't J&D at all.
Thanks very much for the Steam link, that was mighty kind of you, I'll play the demo later and get back to you.
This dev description sounds more like a 3D fighting game though:
Here's the rest of their comments. You wrote half the article, NL wrote the other half.
Here's some PR and a feature list:
The peaceful Boredom Kingdom, with its happy citizens, monotonous calm... and adorable little bunnies, has sent the Devil himself into a flying rage! With dreams of turmoil, torture, and bloodshed on his mind, he unleashed the dreadful Curse of the Eternal Night upon the land. Not in love with the idea of a change in their peaceful lifestyle, the humans summon their saviour — a mighty wizard with the power to put an end to the evil curse.
In order to stop these party crashers from ruining his fun, the Devil summons the spirit of Jack, the Pumpkin Lord, to fight against the wizard’s army of beasts and destroy the killjoy wizard! You, as Jack, will be tearing your way through fright-filled levels as you punish those who dared defy your master!
Features include:
I love the visuals!
@Deadhunter pretty good game that, the reworked songs weren't bad either!
This actually looks pretty good.
Game looks really good. I'm always up for more platformer games.
Looks sick. Lots of Medievil vibes.
Looks food but it needs sine voice acting.
looks good! Perfect for my best friend. He loved those games like Ratchet and Clank!
Not taking anything away from this game but what we really need is a new Jak on PS5!
@JMills omg woke bae
Hmm... interesting.
The animation style - particularly the 'bounce' in the run - definitely reminds me of Jak & Daxter, which I absolutely loved... but it does also look a bit dated. I think it's due to the colours looking a bit washed out, almost as if it's been filmed off of a CRT display.
One thing I always find with these games is that the design of the character has to appeal to me, and I'm not sure this one does. I won't say it's a definite 'yes', but I'll keep an eye on it.
