A whopping $3 billion were spent on video games in the United States last month, but not even juggernauts like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order could prevent the industry from succumbing to a 15 per cent year-over-year decline. This has been the tale of the tape all year, of course, as consumer interest in current-gen consoles weakens.
Overall, the sector was down 13 per cent in 2019 compared to 2018, and it’s a trend that will likely continue right up until the introduction of the PlayStation 5 later this year. As previously mentioned, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order were the best-selling games of December 2019, with Madden NFL 20 and NBA 2K20 rounding out the top five.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is now Respawn Entertainment’s best-selling title of all time, which is impressive when you consider it’s only been on the market a couple of months. Exclusives like Death Stranding and Marvel’s Spider-Man did manage to make their way into the best-selling PlayStation games list, but couldn’t crack the overall software charts, which is largely dominated by Nintendo titles.
It’s perhaps worth mentioning that the Switch was the best-selling hardware platform for the month and year in the United States, although the PS4 posted the biggest numbers for the decade as a whole. Which systems and software do you think will come out on top in 2020? Look into your crystal ball in the comments section below.

the industry is in decline because developers don't take chances or try to create something new and different, instead they would rather churn out sequels to a game (EG: Call of Duty) or just make the same game over and over again with a new skin (EG: any Ubisoft game in the last 10 years) and people are getting sick of playing the same game over and over
@FullbringIchigo That's not true when Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the best-selling game of the year, though.
The bigger issue is that there was no Red Dead this year, and PS4 and Xbox One are getting old now.
@FullbringIchigo and they keep trying screw us over all the time. more more gamers getting fed up looking at their backlog and not buying anything new.
To be fair it wasn't really the best year for top titles overall, there were a few standouts but overall not hugely memorable
@get2sammyb i was mainly going on about a lot of the previous releases but point taken
It slowed down as everyone is waiting for Stadia...
