PSone’s iconic startup sound is arguably one of the most recognisable audio sequences in all of games, but did you know it was designed specifically to detect issues with the console’s CD drive? “The function of this sound is to tell the user that the hardware is running like it is supposed to, and that the disc has successfully been read,” composer Takafumi Fujisawa told Game Informer. “To add, the swooshing reverse sound [in the PSone sequence] is designed so that it can go into loop if the disc couldn’t be read, and we can understand if something went wrong.”
Fujisawa explained that the sound was created in two days: “I kept thinking from the start that I wanted the sound image to be something exciting, like that feeling when you walk into a cinema. I really wanted to communicate and reinforce that something fun is going to happen.” Mission accomplished, sir.

Indeed. PS1's startup is still my favorite to this day. When it's played through a great home theatre setup, it can give you chills.
Such a good startup. I’d love the PS5 to have its own spin on the original. The PS4 is bland in comparison.
Truant Pixel have said they have a PS One theme ready to go if Sony will allow it.
@nessisonett Yeah, I was really excited for a crazy PS5 startup sequence, but there wasn't one. Disappointing.
I still have the 20th anniversary theme on my PS4 it plays the ps1 start up and it does sound good through the surround sound works on ps vita too
@get2sammyb Are you from the future? Tell us what the PS5's startup sequence is PLEASE!!
The best opening sound for console ever 😁
@Turismo4GT Whoops, I meant PS4. But maybe I've heard the PS5 one, too.
Now I'm getting an urge to play this video on my surround sound so I can shake my shelves with the overwhelming bass.
Thats that iconic sound.still gets goosebumps when i hear that ps1 start up sound.word up son
I would be happy with the original being used for the PS5.
Honestly, I love the symphony music for the PS3 the best...PS4 was kind of plan, but I'm hoping that the PS5 will add up and get a catchy opening. For some reason, the only other sound I like when I start up a console is the weird sound of the Gamecube!
@get2sammyb 🤔 interesting. You've piqued my attention, Sir.
This and the playstation 4 beep my favorite sounds. Ps5 should have both lol
Such a great little jingle! Would be cool if we could customize it on the ps5. Be able to choose from any Playstation console, heck they could even sell some for a buck just like themes!
It's a cool sound - has very THX vibes.
I actually prefer Dreamcast and Gamecube startup tunes, though. They are just fun.
@GamingFan4Lyf Ooh, yeah, the Dreamcast maybe has my favourite system sounds of any console. It just sounds so futuristic even now.
I loved this when my friend got his Playstation (a full year or so before I could afford my own) and it sounded so cool compared to the old 16bit generations.
A perfect marriage of aesthetics and function.
I've also been disappointed with how each PS console's "opening" seems to have been getting increasingly low-key. The PS1's start-up sound was loud, atmospheric, and memorable, and served as a psychological transition point from the mundane world of real life to the visions conjured on the Playstation.
The big obstacle to this nowadays is how modern electronics are basically designed to stay on at all times. The ritualistic behaviors so long associated with console gaming (getting up, putting the disc in, closing the tray, powering the console on, sitting down and watching the opening) are vanishing as consoles become more and more like PCs.
On PS2 when that sequence kept long it meant it's having problems reading the disc - I knew that.
In this age where people want things so fast fast fast fast, I bet the PS5 won't even have no logo on startup. 😆 I mean they had to even follow 360 and drop that 'PLAYSTATION 3' logo at the start of games.
Wouldn't it be great for 25 years they released some sort of Download where you can have the ps1 PS2 start ups for PS4 and 5
For anyone who wants to reminisce

@TheArt The towers for PS2 re-presented your data on your memory cards
@AdamNovice I already have the PS1 theme on my PS4. Is this something different?
The security was in two parts - one on the hardware and the other on the disk.
The part on the hardware was the actually logo, and when the security passed on the disk side, is when it showed the text at the bottom. Kinda like a key and lock security
@redd214 i always thought the ui etc should all be customizable. From the theme, colors and transparency for every part individually as well as location and size of icons etc. Using a color wheel to choose any variations of color, perhaps sell sound packs, and put WAY more effort into themes (like the last of us one where ellie is standing infront of the icon menu) would be cool to be able to choose different startups, or no start up.
@Boucho11 Yeah it has PS1 images on it, it's made by a third party hence why they need Sony's approval.
I agree that sound was so cool not unlike today’s version I like retro sounds definitely plus this was so innovative especially for the middle of 1994-1995👍🏻 Sony made a winner👉🏻👍🏻
