Shenmue III is just days away from finally releasing on PlayStation 4. Push Square editor Sammy Barker's excitement is at an all-time high, but can the same be said of you? Have you too been waiting 18 years for the series' third instalment? Check out its launch trailer above to gauge your interest.
Close to three minutes of footage details Ryo's continued pursuit of Lan Di with the Phoenix Mirror in hand. It's shaping up to be an experience straight out of the Dreamcast era, but then that's the exact thing that fans have been wanting for the past two decades. Shenmue III launches on 19th November, but if you're a newcomer to the franchise, you can quickly catch up with the recent Shenmue I & II remaster on PS4.

I wonder when the story will actually finish?
I've never played Shenmue and I feel like this is something made specifically for the fans of the first games and not so much to attract newcomers to the series. Curious about the review though.
@Knuckles-Fajita For years the creator of this game, has been saying he needs at the very least 5 games to finish the story. Also recently, he has said that when we finish playing part 3 ,its only 40% of the story. So probably six games to finish it,lol !
I hope Sammy likes it.
@AdamNovice It would be a crime if this sites review is not by Sammy.
@Flurpsel yet it will definately benefit followers of the the first 2 as the stories all follow on from one another. There is, of course the HD remaster of the 1st 2 tho on ps4. I platinum'd them upon release and they are still as great as they were back in the day. I'm pumped for this one.
Been playing through the first one and it’s just incredible. Seriously impressive not only for it’s time, but today too.
I genuinely welled up a bit watching this.
I have been waiting for this for a long time.
I still remember playing Shenmue on my Sony Trinitron monitor and a Creative 2.1 computer speaker system using the official Dreamcast VGA Cable - it looked and sounded glorious.
I had a chance to get the European import of Shenmue II, but I stupidly passed it up and didn't get a chance to play the 2nd game until the Xbox release years later.
I did get Shenmue 1 & 2 HD for Xbox One last year and loved it!
A little pro tip on the blown-out voice audio (especially with surround sound users): set the SFX volume to around 73%. It will put the voice volume to around what it was in the Dreamcast days. I swear the first time I started Shenmue HD, I thought my speakers were going to explode because the sound effects mix was way too high - it really makes that already compressed audio sound terrible.
Bottom line: I can't wait for Shenmue III - it's been a long time coming!
@GamingFan4Lyf too long my friend, way too long.
Very excited for this. Trailer goods good. Waited so many years for this. As a Kickstarter backer I'm anxiously waiting for a confirmation email that the game has been dispatched.
I know they said they won’t complete the story with this one, but I hope that they give a satisfactory ending to the original story at the end of Shenmue III and then just hint at the next story instead of continue to drag on the same thing. That might be a way to have a win-win for everybody.
The hype is real!!!!! I cannot wait.
@Knuckles-Fajita confirmed NO. Will be a shame if it flops.
@nessisonett it felt real. Something most open world games today cant even get right. Yu was waaaay ahead of his time. I remember reading the budget and how every Dreamcast owner needed to buy the game twice to break even...
I have the Shenmue Collection for both PS4 and PC and I do plan on picking Shenmue 3 up next week, even though I havn't played the first two yet.
Can't wait for the real GOTY but I might need to replay Shenmue 2 since I forgot most of the story
@Nyne11Tyme I totally get what you mean. Not many games feel like a truly living place but Yu nailed it. It almost reminds me of the Harvest Moon games, where you get to know all the villagers and they all have their own personalities. That feeling, but in a much larger environment is my dream game.
Yea this is my most anticipated of the year to be honest. A few games in my life i can remember specific details to myself and surroundings. For example lol: When shenmue dropped i vividly remember rockin a pair of JNCO jeans, laughing my ass off to Cartman wanting more cheesy poofs and Stankonia by Outkast in the cd player in my room. And Thanksgiving was wonderful that year. Shenmue is special.
@get2sammyb Know what you mean, was in my early twenties when I played these on the Dreamcast at the time, getting to the end of the second and knowing the sequel would probably take a while and be on some other console. Hard to believe the game exists!
Although they said that this wouldn't be the end of the Shenmue story.
yes the story goes on needs two or more to complete the franchise.
