The Need for Speed franchise hasn't had the best time of it this generation, but it sounds like the latest game gets back on the right track. Need for Speed Heat is out today, and the first reviews are coming online. The consensus seems to be that this is head and shoulders above the loot box-driven Payback, but still doesn't quite reach the highs of past entries. Let's take a look at some of the reviews so far.
IGN - 8/10
Need for Speed Heat is a mosaic of existing ideas but it is easily the most impressive Need for Speed game in years.
VG247 - 4/5
For the first time in years, Need For Speed has remembered why people used to play it so religiously, and recognised the more recent elements that put them off.
GamesRadar+ - 3.5/5
Great modding and a decent game engine can't disguise the tired story and simplistic driving.
USgamer - 3/5
Need for Speed Heat is a conglomeration Need for Speeds past. A little Payback, a little Rivals, a little Hot Pursuit, a little Underground. The result is a good foundation to build upon, but weird AI issues, a lack of variety in events, and some poor tuning in cop chases mean it's not great. Maybe next gen will see Ghost Games bringing a little more real heat.
Eurogamer - No Score
Ghost Games strips back the recent excess to deliver a simple, satisfying take on the Need for Speed formula, even if some problems persist.

Doesn’t really interest me tbh but if it does well then EA at least won’t can the series for the fans out there.
I was enjoying the EA Access 10 hour trial, until I played 3 hours and it locked me out
Now says: purchase on the store
No thanks
Like I said in another thread, I haven't played a NFS game since Most Wanted, but I know that there has been a massive fall from grace since. This might be the one to bring me back.
30 fps on consoles for a racing title... err, it's a big pass from me. Also, no cockpit view, just crappy Mario Kart 3rd person and a crappy bumper view also inclines me to give it a pass. Maybe, if it's 60 fps on PC, I'll buy it in a Steam sale for a fiver.
Driving handling in racing games are so varied, that no matter how many reviews I see, I never buy them without a demo (or try it somewhere). I'm very picky on how driving feels and reviews can't convey if it will feel right to me.
Rivals and Most Wanted were loads of fun, the last two were disappointing, Good to see this one is getting better reviews... I'll still be waiting for a sale.
Game is great fun, best NFS on the ps4 by a big margin! For those on the fence it'll be half off in a few weeks so may as well wait it out, though I do recommend it!
I'm kinda interested, but will need to look more into reviews and research how microtransactions are implemented in this game. It's probably something that I'd purchase in a sale if the microtransactions aren't too bad.
@crimsontadpoles No microtransactions or lootboxes in the game whatsoever
@NeoTokyo404 That really isn’t true. I don’t know why some reviewers hate NFS games on PS4 so much, but they are all significantly better than Most Wanted.
@Wesker Are we both talking about Most Wanted (2005) on PS2? It's probably my favourite racing game of all time, and I don't think I'm the only one who would say that. If the PS4 games are much better, like you say, then they must be masterpieces.
@NeoTokyo404 ahh I thought you were talking about 2012 PS3 release from Criterion, which was pretty bland and no where near as good as their Burnout Paradise or NFS Hot Pursuit games.
@Wesker Ah okay, no problem. I heard that the Criterion games weren't very good, yeah!
@redd214 I had a quick look into it. An EA Community Manager confirmed on Reddit that that there are indeed no lootboxes, and they're only planning on adding some very minor microtransactions:
"We plan to have post launch paid-DLC in the form of car packs. Later this year we'll introduce a time-save pack, which will show all collectables on the map.
That's it."

Anyway, that's made me much more interested in this game.
@crimsontadpoles cool, hope you enjoy it when you do get it!
@Spoonman-2 You're lucky you got 3 hours out of it. I downloaded the trial and couldn't play at all it was locked and expecting me to buy the full game even when I had full 10 Hours remaining. What a joke. 😒
Remember when NFS was the premier racing series and now its barely worth mentioning?
@redd214 how many camera views are there when driving?
That's a good sign. Hopefully they continue to improve the systems and drive mechanics.
I’m predicting a 7 from Pushsquare...
@MoGulfraz
Is that it for the trial then?
Thought it was a glitch, but seems it’s been taken down
@Nightcrawler71 dont remember off the top of my head but I believe 4 or 5.
@Spoonman-2 EA said they're having problems with it, they are trying to sort it out but I have no faith in them. Was looking forward to trying it out before I buy the game. I haven't even played the trial they should give me them 10 Hours 😒
