Overwatch 2 has just been announced for PlayStation 4, but the way this sequel interacts with the original game's experience is a rather interesting one. Instead of being an entirely separate multiplayer offering, every one of the PvP modes in Blizzard's follow-up will share a player base with the original Overwatch.
Every new map, Hero, and game type is making its way to the first game, and the two titles will work together to form one large pool of players. Onstage at Blizzcon 2019, lead designer Jeff Kaplan described it as a brand new approach to sequels.
Better yet, those who do purchase the sequel won't have to start from scratch when it comes to cosmetic items. Every single skin, player icon, spray, emote, and more will carry over into Overwatch 2, where you'll have access to those customisation options as well as a host of new ones.
It's an interesting way to treat a sequel, so what do you make of this news? Wear your favourite skin in the comments below.

So what’s the draw to getting the second one if you own the first? I haven't touched it in years, but if it also throws in the co-op or story to the first one I’d give it another go.
Honestly, that’s great news. I have a whole lot of nice skins I wouldn’t want to lose, despite never spending a penny on MTX. It’s interesting that OW1 will have the same heroes like Sojourn coming to it but ultimately, I would like that sweet sweet campaign.
I mean that's cool, but... if that's the case, Overwatch 2 is just a $60 set of campaign missions. I'm sure they'll be fine, because the Overwatch PvE stuff has been fun in the past, but all of that was also free. So... I don't get it.
Does the new art style move to overwatch 2? Either way, that trailer was amazing!
WHY?
Just make an addon containing coop, new chars and the story mode. Why call it Overwatch 2? Will Overwatch 2 contain all content of Overwatch 1? This is just confusing and stupid imho.
@Scollurio I have a buddy who read this article and said the exact same thing you did but definitely in a less friendly way.
He said this is stupid and lazy as ________. So, it’s just DLC but they’re gonna sell it for 60?
@Stragen8 - The draw is you'll get everything you had, including the cosmetics, with the new story mode and co-op stuff added on top (along with whatever else Blizzard adds on later).
@OmegaStriver - There are a few things you can say about Overwatch 2, but lazy isn't really one of them. Just because the PvP stuff is also coming to the first game doesn't change the fact that it's still Overwatch 2 content. They're adding new game modes, new mechanics, new characters, new skins, a new story mode; basically all the stuff you'd expect from a sequel (especially for a MP shooter like Overwatch). The only difference is that for now (because I doubt the first game will receive new content forever), both games are sharing the same PvP stuff, so that those who have the original don't lose out if they get the sequel.
Most expensive dlc ever. Very clever, Blizzard!
So it's not a sequel... It's an expansion, a dlc... extra content. Calling something that is not a sequel a sequel is not a new approach to sequels, it's called "lying".
@OmegaStriver All the cool doods that made Blizzard great are long gone. This is just another Activision puppet trying to make as much profit as possible. If they sold the DLC pack with story and pve content as a one-time-ingame purchase for those, that are interested, it would be fair.
Also, about the graphical overhaul, you can also do this in the existing game, give players the option to play with "classic graphics engine" or "enhanced". If the rest of the game is shared between OW1 and OW2 anyways, what difference does it make? Similar things have been done in games like EverQuest and their own World of Warcraft.
@DanM Exactly.
@FullMetalWesker Well Overwatch was never meant to have a story, it's a competitive PVP teamplay game and most people are interested in it for exactly THIS reason. I enjoyed Overwatch for a while until I noticed it's matchmaking is even worse than that of HotS, but I couldn't care less for a "thrown together story". Now if they announced a proper Diablo MMO, that'd be something different. But I respect different opinions. I for my part think it IS incredibly lazy and a cashgrab out of the rulebook.
