The Golden Joystick Awards 2019 wrapped up over the weekend, and this year's winners have been announced. The annual, public-voted awards ceremony took place on Friday evening, and we can now see which games took home those hefty-looking trophies.
Days Gone was nominated in four categories, and rides away with two wins; Best Storytelling and PlayStation Game of the Year. Also earning itself a duo of awards is Resident Evil 2, which escapes with nods for Best Audio and the top honour of Ultimate Game of the Year. Beat Saber deservedly wins Best VR/AR Game, while Cyberpunk 2077 picks up the award for Most Wanted Game, which seems about right.
Anyway, here are all the winners. What do you think? Are there any winning titles that surprise you? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Well of course but does DS count for next year or is it in a limbo year thingy?
"Best" Game Expansion - GTA Online: Diamond Casino Update
... Why am I disappointed yet not surprised at the same time?
Plus... how did the original Life is Strange get an award for Best contribution in 2019? Seems a little late for that!
@JJ2 It should be included in next year's Golden Joysticks, I think.
@Quintumply
Fair enough then. Cheers
Days Gone is PlayStation Game of the Year ok........... in my opinion it should be Pes 2020
Esports Game of the Year - Fortnite omg that says it all
Days gone is one of the few games I couldn't even bring myself to finish. I gave it a fair shot but the missions were just incredibly dull.
@Flurpsel
Did we play the same game? Haha
@Number09 Whats up with Fortnite being esports game of the year, exactly?
N.i.c.e .days gone is amazing.bend is either working on days gone 2. Or syphon filter for the ps5.word up son
@playstation1995
I say both
They started hiring for a next gen game long before Days Gone shipped.
@JJ2 honest question, what did you like about it so much?
Combat was mediocre, the hordes were massively underrepresented. The protanogist was allrightish but nothing more. If you compare it to Horizon Zero Dawn, which was also a first party by the numbers action RPG, I'd say HZD was a lot better.
I thought Red Dead Online's Frontier Pursuits was well better that GTA Online's Diamond Casino update.
@JJ2. Both games at the same time.that would be crazy.word up son
@Flurpsel
I dont understand what you mean with the hordes were massively underrepresented.'
The protanogist is 10/10
Combat was a lot of fun in particular vs hordes.
Bike ---> awesome
Loved the story and beautiful open world
Hey your just talking to the wrong guy here best game ever for me
Missions are dull is weird to my ears because of bike, hordes , open world etc. Its all but dull
Edits: sorry for phone mispellings
@Flurpsel
Apologies for lots of misspelling edits in my comment above.
Up to what point did you play?
My personal GOTY as well . Days gone was fantastic.
Days Gone was a big surprise for me. It was a game I had zero hype for and only bought because of Sony's recent record for fantastic first-party games, and yet it managed to be one of my fave games this year. Deserves the award in my opinion.
@Neolit you hit the nail on the head there buddy. I'm only on Episode 8 with over 55 hours played, just a sheer joy to play, i will pick up Day's Gone at somepoint i just forgot about it when it came out!
@Neolit
Hmm... Are you associated with Famitsu by any chance? 😉 Have yet to play Death Stranding but I'd like everybody to observe a minute of silence for the PC Game of the Year 🤣 Oh how the platform has fallen. This coming from a PC gamer, as well.
@Flurpsel
I'm right there with you. I really wanted to like that game, but it was so glitchy and unoptimized, uninspired and generic, and just an all around chore to play.
The bike in particular was something I hated. It controlled like a ****ing tank and the pop-in led to my death a couple times, which sometimes led to me losing quite a bit of progress.
Although, if not for the glitches and the terrible frame rate and pop in I would have finished it, but as it stands with all of my save data gone, I will probably never go back. Thinking about starting that game over makes me cringe.
It was one of the worst games I've purchased all year, and I definitely regret buying it at $60. Not worth it.
This was a very quiet Golden Joystick Awards this year. I didn’t even realize it was happening. I thought that it was later in the year before, so as to encompass all the holiday releases. I guess not. They must make the cut-off for consideration on Nov. 1st since RDR2 released on Oct 26 last year.
Started it. Other things came out. Sitting on the shelf. Now death stranding and shenmue 3....dunno when i will get back to Dayz Gone
Congrats for bend, it's almost funny that most of the press (not pushsquare of course) is down on this game while gamers are really liking (and buying) the game.
@Flurpsel the combat was anything but mediocre,the hordes weren’t underrepresented unless you’re talking about during the story because it was way better that they just roamed made it more dangerous not knowing if you’re going to stumble across one while out exploring and deacon starts off fairly generic but by the end he grows exponentially as a character which you didn’t know about or experience since you yourself said you couldn’t even finish the game.
@MightyDemon82 it’s going to be 20 at Walmart for Black Friday
@Constable_What bike controlled like a tank lol now I’ve seen it all
@dark_knightmare2
You're right, it controlled like garbage.
A severe lack of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in that list.
I'm happy for Days Gone as its a fantastic game, despite the more lukewarm reception from critics its clear players loved it. Very happy about Resident Evil 2 as that's one of the best horror games out there.
To me Bend Studios just wasted there development efforts on THIS game instead of making a Syphon Filter sequal to Spyhon Filter: Logan Shadow. Unacceptable!
@dark_knightmare2 The flight from Aberdeen and back again would be costly to go to Walmart 😉 thanks though i'll get it cheap on the PS store at somepoint!
That's embarrassing
@JJ2 well I mean they were advertised and shown in trailers as one of the main features of the game but it turned out to be nothing more than a gimmick.
I played pretty far I think, did a lot of the recon missions with the guys in yellow hazmat suits. But the missions didn't evolve beyond this or shooting a bunch of people, and the hordes never got the attention it deserved.
I think it had a lot of potential but in the end it didn't deliver in my opinion. I'm glad you enjoyed it though.
yep glad it is getting the respect it deserves loved every minute of this game.
@Flurpsel
I'm sorry it didnt resonate with you. I still dont understand what you mean with the hordes being a gimmick but perspective I guess haha.
Just let s say I usually dont like trophies I think those are horrible gimmicks haha. Hate those shoot 124 cans of beers and collect 65 white rabbits crap. Haha However I got platinum in Days Gone almost without trying, (just a bit haha) just enjoying the game. That speaks of how I like it.
Edit
Sorry for grammar. I type quickly on the move on my phone
Nice. It's easily my GOTY - I loved every minute of it.
@Constable_What that’s your opinion and I know opinions can’t be wrong but in this case it’s super wrong lol
@dark_knightmare2
Nah. You're super wrong. Like, in general. lol
Well deserved, my game of the year.
One of the best selling games for PlayStation 4 this gen, best story and best playstation game of the year awards as well.
Once again I'm glad its pissing off all haters, let them salty tears flow, can't wait for Days Gone 2, well done Bend Studio
No idea how this won best story, especially when some of it was based on choice with half the choices lopped off. How do they define their gaming year? It probably is the best depending on where they're drawing the line. This is a decent game but easily the weakest of Sony's exclusives for the last few years.
Can't argue with Resident Evil 2 being the Ultimate GOTY but I will say Astro Bot is a better VR game than Beat Saber
Also how on Earth is Epic the studio of the year? A year in which Capcom has put out Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5 and the huge Monster Hunter World, whilst Epic just made level 2 for Fortnite as far as I can tell
I voted for Judgment, though I did also enjoy Days Gone's story, it just had too many technical issues and while I liked the characters and story, Judgment also bested it in those categories.
Resident Evil 2 is the best game of the year, imo, so I'm not surprised it took Ultimate Game of the Year, but if I had a vote I wouldn't pick RE 2 just because it's a remake and I feel like these awards should be strictly for new games released in 'current year.'
@carlos82
Western bias, no question.
@carlos82 Astrobot is one of those games which is so mindblowingly amazing people get amnesia and forget it released recently as they think its been part of their lives for so long. That could be the only explanation.
If Death Stranding doesn't win some Goty awards 2019 it would be a complete travesty. Its just amazing. (bar having to drink 3 monster drinks at a time and some menu issues.)
@kyleforrester87 Its bad because not only does it steal elements from other games, the gameplay is very bland an repetitive. Seriously, this is the Fortnite gameplay in a nutshell, “Drop, loot, build, kill, repeat" That's it! There's no alternative gamemode! The gameplay is not only boring and repetitive, but is also really unbalanced! The loot uses RNG! Which means, you just have to rely on getting an overpowered weapon and kill everyone. There's little to no skill involved. Its just luck. Yet, Epic Games keeps adding pointless things to the game to only make the gameplay feel more unbalanced! Another reason is that Epic Games is milking it dry. They use this purchase system called “V-bucks" Again, back to what I said before about it stealing elements, doesn't V-bucks sound similar to Robux? Aren't you ashaimed? You use this to buy things that don't even affect gameplay like skins and dances. Let me start of with the skins, these skins look hideous! I know its trying to be “cartoony" But really? They don't even bother to animate the faces! It really makes you feel uncomfortable! How could people even bother to buy that disgusting sxxx? Now, the dances… Oh my god the dances!… Alright, I gotta say, these dances are CRINGY!! They look so incredibly stupid! Infact, my school did an entire dance-off! You know what, those dances made the people look stupid! I couldn't bare listening to that cancerous music either! It only shows that Fortnite is non-stop virus spreading across the world! Fortnite needs to STOP! Not to mention how pugfugly the graphics look! Everytime I get a glympse of how the graphics look, I find myself about throw up! Okay, now that that's out of the way, lets get to the worst part of the game. But, its not the game itself. Its the despicably toxic community! Seriously, the community is nothing but whiny kids that have the same excuse for people who don't like the game, “You probably don't like the game because you're TRASH at it!” I am tired of hearing that idiotic excuse. Another thing I despise about the community is the constant fighting and bullying! People make fun of others being bad at the game, they make fun of people using the default skin, they make fun of people who don't like the game, and most important of all, they make fun of people who play other games like Minecraft, Roblox, COD, Pokemon, Mario, Sonic, PUBG, you name it! Seriously, if you ever see these kinds of skamps, don't ever bother to talk to them until they learn to get a better taste in gaming! Now, another bad thing about the community are the Youtubers and Twitch streamers! Seriously, I could list some of these cancerous streamers/ youtubers all I want! But, since this talk has been long enough already, I will only list a few. Ricegum, Ninja, Ali-A, the list goes on! There's too much for me to be able to cover! Its a problem. It needs to STOP! I hope I answered your question to why Fortnite is a bad game! If you want, I could go on longer of why its so bad! But for now, I'm gonna end it off here. I give Fortnite the lowest score I can think of. A -∞/10 (Negative infinity out of ten) word up Kyle.
@Number09 “ If you want, I could go on longer of why its so bad! ”
Yes please 😂
@kyleforrester87 😂
