Sony has been criticised for its tough stance on cross-console compatibility, initially giving developers and players looking for the functionality a hard "no". Of course, more recently, the platform holder has softened on the issue. Last year, the company announced a "major policy change" with regards to cross-play, stating it would be trialling the service in beta form with Fortnite. Over the last 12 months or so, this beta has remained in place, as far as we know, and a handful of other games have been allowed to bring cross-play to PlayStation 4.
Now, it seems that Sony's beta stage of cross-play is officially over. A new report from Wired says PS4's cross-play beta has come to an end: "While it's not announcing the news explicitly, the PS4's cross-play efforts have officially moved out of the beta stage, meaning that the console can support cross-play on any titles that studios provide the functionality for," it reads. "This month's [Call of Duty:] Modern Warfare may be the first major title to take advantage of it at launch, and likely won't be the last."
Additionally, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has been retweeting some stories on this topic, so it definitely seems that cross-play is now all systems go on PS4. That should mean all the studios that want to include the functionality in their games are now able to do so, and perhaps our list of compatible titles won't look quite so barren in future.
We've reached out to Sony for comment.

Does anyone know if eso is now cross play?
That’s great news. Having a son with a PS4 whose whole class has XBOnes has not been so great for him (well, apart from all the amazing exclusives he’s got the play that his mates have missed out on).
Us oldies don’t feel the pressure of being a kid with the wrong console. Lol
no excuse from publishers for their games not to have it now
Just a thought. Does this mean Destiny 1 can get crossplay to keep that game alive longer?
I could see some old games benefitting from this, but unlikely publishers care.
@Kienda godly don't they would go all the way back to 1 but D2 seems like a perfect candidate.
This is really good news, more people being able to play together is always a great thing. Hopefully this is a standard thing moving forward into next gen
Battle for the Grid, Wargroove and MH World crossplay when!
@redd214 yeah, this as standard moving forward would be great. Would help bring gamers together regardless of their allegiance.
I want cross-save more than cross-play, so I can play some games on switch lite and continue it on tv with ps4.
Now the crying about caen be officially dead. The lying from developers can also cease... looking at you fallout 76.
It's not like it matters in the scheme of things. PC players will always have the advantage. Switch players will always have the most disadvantage due to lowest performance. Only PS4 and Xbox will have equal ground.
But for people who want to play together, good for you.
@wiiware exactly!... That way I can keep best of both worlds.
@Kienda I think he has the right one his friends have the wrong one. 😋
Its the thing i never cared about.
I hope they get Monster Hunter World running, i’d give anything to be able to play with my little brother.
Good on you guys, the metaphorical middle ages are over!
Now Bungie you can start testing Destiny 2 with Xbox and PC crossover play for next year please
im not gonna touch it with a ten foot pole, and i am not gonna sign up to some stupid website to play online either for this (look at what just happen to ea fifa2020 data leaks). it also makes m+kb cheating much more easy, crossplay was a stupid idea from the start. only reason these companies push for it, is it will make it easier to monetize people and get people into these streaming services they desperate want you to sign up to.
