After years of waiting, Borderlands 3 is finally here. The first batch of reviews has gone live for Gearbox's hotly anticipated looter shooter, and they're starting off pretty strong. Most of them talk about a relatively familiar formula, and that point seems to be one of contention. By the sound of it, if you're a Borderlands fan already, this new entry will be like popping on an old pair of slippers. See below for some early verdicts. As for ours, we're still waiting on review code to ping into our inbox, but rest assured we'll share our thoughts as soon as possible.
IGN - 9/10
Borderlands 3 sticks to its guns and outdoes itself with an amazing arsenal of weapons, humor, and missions.
Destructoid - 9/10
Borderlands 3 takes most of the good bits of Borderlands 2 and either rolls with them or improves upon them. It didn't need to reinvent the wheel either, as Gearbox pretty much had the formula figured out the second time around.
GameSpot - 8/10
Borderlands 3 fumbles with its bosses, but the game ultimately continues its predecessors' tradition of fun, mayhem-filled looting and shooting.
USGamer - 4/5
Despite the formula growing a bit stale, Gearbox has expanded upon it in the right way, resulting in a great Borderlands experience.
Game Informer - 8/10
An old formula executed well, Borderlands 3 rarely takes chances or strays from expectation.
PC Gamer - 63/100
An endless font of bad jokes and cool guns in the series' most vapid story yet, Borderlands 3 skates by on watching numbers fly and goons explode.

Can't wait til Friday!! Glad it's reviewing well overall.
Knew it would be solid, but I'm admittedly a bit put off by the humour. I was half hoping they'd tone it down a bit, but I guess it was never realistically going to happen. Some people really like Borderlands' style of comedy, but I am sadly not one of them. Drives me up the wall.
@redd214 would average reviews of put you off?
The only thing that's putting me off it right now is the live service stuff, doesnt mean I won't be getting it though
Wait BL3 still a thing i totally forgot about it.
is it true people outside usa didnt get review copies for this game ?[just like this site]
@RedMan33 no not at all. But I'm happy for the devs to have made a well reviewed game. Recognition goes a long way.for some people.
Going to try and juggle this and Monster Hunter plus work. Pray for me...
Nice!... can give Division 2 a rest for a bit.
@HailHydra97 It's true!
@Splat
Just play Monster Hunter thats the better game
More Borderlands is a great thing for me! & Gearbox make great DLC as well.
Greedfall Reviews coming soon it is out tomorrow?
@redd214 true even if it had got 6's & 7's (which are still good scores, I just think a lot of people are snobs when it comes to game scores) I'd still be keeping my eye on it
Never played a Boderlands game, I'll give the first one that was free with Plus a try some time but it's not high on my list. Hope it's good for those that are looking forward to it.
I liked Tales of the Boderlands.
@BearsEatBeets if you never played one I would recommend just starting with 2. Some things may not make sense but the improvements over the first make it a more pleasurable experience imo.
@RedMan33 ive played 100s of hours of the series and pre-ordered this the minute it was up. The scores werent going to sway me in the slightest. Hope you enjoy it if you end up getting it!
Might just be me, but I'd advise maybe holding off on the pre-orders unless you really like Borderlands 2 and want more of the same. Games have moved on since 2012 when B2 came out and it seems slightly suspect that review code has only been sent to select places. Its not just a US/UK divide, personally I like the guys online (like ACG) who produce a long form style review and they haven't got codes either.
@redd214 me too, replayed BL2 again recently and it's still a blast. I'm sure I will when I get it - which will probably be Friday
@BearsEatBeets yeah he's right BL2 is best to start with, it does a great job making the first games playable characters great NPCs and the story doesn't follow on as much as it looks like it will from BL2 into BL3, better shooting and more varied world to explore
@ShogunRok - it started off with a certain charm, but it's been getting more OTT and insufferable as the iterations have progressed. i didn't even finish the story for BL2, after platinuming the first game. i tried importing my PS3 save onto the PS4 version, but on PS4 i was running solo, and found the gameplay quite fatiguing after a couple of hours, and never went back to it. more of the same is kinda of what i expected from BL3 and that was never going to interest me as much as the original did 10 years ago.
Well I still haven't finished BL2 but I think I'll get and finish BL3 first!
BL2 shooting mechanics annoy me somehow...
@Splat 🙇🏽♂️🙏🏽
PC Gamer suck!
PC gamer upset the game is an EGS launch exclusive?
My most hyped release of the year. Unfortunately I’m in the midst of moving, so won’t be able to pick it up for a few weeks. Happy it’s reviewing so well.
@ShogunRok Tiny Tina was possibly the most lurid, horrid npc to ever darken my console...
I reckon somebody at PC Gamer is still mad that Ghost Recon seems to have joined the looter shooter party.
Looking forward to this. Was worried that reviews would be saying that it’s “more of the same”, so it’s good to see its reviewing (mostly) well.
Had a feeling the game would review well. I'll probably get it in the future. Have to brace myself for the tidal wave of new releases in the upcoming months.
Looks like a good contender for the GOTY with MHWI and now this I don't know which one to play now
Borderlands is back.i l😀ve this series.word up son
I'm looking forward to it, but I'm starting to wonder whether hammering BL2 and the Pre-Sequel over the summer may have been a mistake. Don't want to be bloated before the main course even arrives.
Oh well, no point stopping now...
i will hold back my enthusiasm until i know how intrusive the microtransactions are gonna be, how big download the day one bug patch is, and i know the whole game can be played offline.
@redd214 same here I have the super duper deluxe edition preordered and luckily I can start playing Thursday at 9 so I’m counting down the hours
@KnightWolf god this comment about “insert popular game here” and forgetting about it is so played out and frankly annoying and needs to go away fast
@KnightWolf completely different games and it was dumb to even try to compare the two
@Lyonjak I think borderlands fans are fine and know what they are getting into. I mean BL 2 is 7 years old and still played to this day
@ShogunRok I really wish they'd tried to return to the lonely, even mysterious tone of BL1 instead of making another meme-fest where you can't get a moment's peace without someone yelling in your ear. Hopefully more is skippable - it's a real problem having a game that encourages multiple play-throughs where you're forced to stand around listening to the same dialogue again.
I am trying my luck at Borderlands 2 again, after I got kind of bored the first time around.
I like the humor, but the gunplay just felt lackluster, plus the game can drag quite a lot.
I just hope it gets better on higher level. The humor and characters are pretty much the only thing that keeps me going in the game.
Just finished Borderlands 2(well sort of) and I think the characters are some of the best character in games especially Tiny Tina She is hilarious It is just silliness which I er erm like Might start the Pre-sequel today but these games take ages to complete so my massive backlog will have to wait(again)
