Update: Rockstar has released a trailer that briefly showcases the update's new character roles. You can watch it above.
Original story: Rockstar has confirmed that Red Dead Online's three highly anticipated character roles are dropping next week alongside the title's next big update. Due on the 10th September, players will be able to take on the roles of bounty hunter, trader, and collector, potentially altering their approach to Red Dead Online quite significantly.
Essentially, roles will add, er, a role-playing aspect to the experience. "With each Role, you’ll always have new pursuits to embark upon that leads to unique items and skills as you progress, in addition to cash and gold payouts," reads the PlayStation Blog.
"Each Role automatically earns Role XP as you complete a Role’s activities: when you hunt a bounty, you’ll earn Role XP toward the Bounty Hunter; when you find a collectible, you’ll earn Role XP towards the Collector and so on. Role XP counts towards your progression through 20 Role Ranks. You will reach a new tier of distinction every 5 ranks: Novice, Promising, Established and Distinguished." It all sounds quite in-depth.
Alongside the introduction of roles, this update promises to be an important milestone. Rockstar mentions the ability to redesign your character's appearance at any time, a more dynamic open world with more random encounters and events, and even an overhauled character movement system, offering "dramatic improvements to player control with quicker and more responsive movement across all phases of combat and locomotion." Interesting stuff.

Today was the first day in over a month where I didn’t play the game for a little bit to do a few daily challenges. Thought I’d leave it for a bit until the big update hit but looks like it won’t be for long after all. Looking forward to seeing what it adds to the experience.
This all sounds more in depth than I thought it would be. I was looking forward to being a Trader the most but I'm not liking the sound of your camp getting raided, that sounds a lot like the GTA biker business'. Thankfully the Collector role sounds perfect for a solo player like myself.
I can't wait for this to drop next week. I've managed to save 250 gold for this update but it sounds like it will be relatively cheap to start specific roles.

Yes, can finally alter my character's appearance. She's a little...rough-looking shall we say so much needed.
I think the collector sounds perfect for me so will definitely give this a whirl when the update lands.
Looks like 3 Collectors here already, although the extra gun spinning tricks for the Bounty Hunter sounds cool. It's good you can do all 3.
Not sure if I'll try and find all the cards or just buy the start-up for the Collector. Surprised the article doesn't mention us Sony gamers get the Trader start-up for free.
@ApostateMage how much success do you have playing solo? Is it actually any fun? I’ve been really interested in this MP for a while, just because I loved the base game. Now with these roles being added it makes me want to give it a go. The trouble is, I never touch MP games! So I don’t want to spend on PS Plus unless I know I’ll enjoy it, and I always fear the “yeah it’s good, but rubbish solo” outcome
@STLamy I wouldn't necessarily say it was good fun playing solo, certainly not as much as when playing with a posse or friends but if you enjoyed sodding off for hours on end just hunting, fishing and helping random people as Authur in the base game then I'm sure you'd enjoy it in online too. That's what I love about it, the sereneness of it all.
The map is so huge that you hardly see any other groups of players outside any of the busier towns. When you do bump into fellow players out in the wilderness they're usually a lot more friendly now compared to what it used to be like. You could even join a random posse if you tire of playing solo or join random players for story missions.
I'd definitely recommend giving it a go, especially after this new update. You could always get a single monthly sub of PS Plus just to try it.
@BearsEatBeets I used this to find all the playing cards in GTAO, only took me a couple hours in a chopper. Even doing it bit by bit until next week is defo worth it.

Right on time
I'm not sure what I want to play as yet but looking forward to the update. Meanwhile I'm really hating troll Opressor bike users in GTAO.
@ApostateMage cheers for the link. Another collector here. Certainly seems more my cup of tea.
I tried online for a week after I beat the game and never went back. The non stop griefing pushed me away. Is it better in those regards now? Collector role sounds intriguing.
@Gumbopudding, there is less griefing now. Much less if the last time you played was 6 or more months ago. The main reasons i believe are the defensive mode and that less and less people seem to be playing. The past month the lobby population drop has been very noticeable. Then too maybe R* reduced lobby size for performance and other reasons.
Lots of improvements and additional content is welcome and long overdue. Maybe too little and too late but i am hoping for the best.
@NoCode23 Thanks for the update. I may give it a spin after the new features kick in.
@ApostateMage Thanks for that. It will be easier now, especially as I misread the original article and thought that the collectibles you have to find were going to be in Rdr2 online. I’m re-installing GTA now.
So that will be Collector and Trader unlocked for free.
@BearsEatBeets @Eldritch No probs. See you out in the fields with your metal detectors, pardners.
