Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is a solid package on PlayStation 4, but it's difficult to deny just how dated the moment to moment gunplay feels. There's a distinct lack of impact to most of the weapons, and the visual feedback is pretty poor by today's standards, even if damage numbers are flying all over the screen. What we're trying to say is that it's some distance away from more recent shooters like Destiny 2.
Fortunately, it sounds like developer Gearbox is really beefing up the gunplay for Borderlands 3. Numerous reports coming out of E3 2019, where the game's playable, suggest that the gunplay is generally far tighter than it was in previous instalments. Guns are apparently much weightier, and bullets have a much more noticeable impact when they lodge into your enemies. This video by those lucky sods over at Laymen Gaming does a particularly good job of explaining how things have improved.
Are you looking forward to getting your hands on Borderlands 3 later this year? Try not to waste ammo in the comments section below.

As long as they don’t remove auto aim, head locking and aim support I’m okay with the changes to gunplay. The easy aiming is one of the reasons I can enjoy games like borderlands, gta and mass effect. I suck at shooters otherwise.
They want to be, just been replaying Borderlands 2, my god the shooting is awful.
I wonder if Moxxi's guns will still vibrate? Dirty lass.
Destiny’s the benchmark in that department.
Edit: oh sorry you mentioned Destiny in the article. I am so so so so sorry. These days people just won’t apologise for the mistakes they make. So I am genuinely sorry.
@AdamNovice no it's not .im playing borderlands 2 right now.the shooting is excellent.word up son
@playstation1995 well.. it’s not excellent. If it was the improvement wouldn’t be so noticeable in number 3. You can like a game but respect the bad points. The shooting in BL2 is very average. Go on, tell me I need to get my eyes tested, I dare you. Word up son.
But does Destiny 2 have a shotgun containing the implanted AI of a remorseful robot who tried and failed to change its murderous ways? I think not.
EDIT I've not actually played Destiny 2, so apologies if it does have a shotgun containing the implanted AI of a remorseful robot who tried and failed to change its murderous ways.
@kyleforrester87 yes you need to get your eyes tested.and you need glasses.haha.im playing the game right now .it plays great to me.the guns are the best pat in borderlands and I lobe the gunplay.best in video games.people always complaining about everything these days.oh this game feels dated.celeste is a love letter to old school game the gameplay is dated but it's fun.xsame as crash bandicoot and spyro.but people love those game.word up son
@playstation1995 it’s not a complaint to see something for what it is. If people didn’t things would not improve. There is a ton of room for improvement in the shooting in Borderlands 3. It was just “ok to pretty good” in BL2. That’s not a complaint, it’s a straight up fact. You’ve been living in New York too long, I guess everything else you experience in life must be amazing by default!
In my opinion gunplay is not terrible, not amazing by today standard. Still serviceable though.
Compared to Destiny, it is undeniable that the guns in Borderlands 2 have more a toy feeling...
I am replaying it a bit in preparation to the 3 and it is still a very entertaining package
@playstation1995 gun variety in Borderlands 2 is one of the strongest point, I agree, as well as comedy moment and generally I love the post apocalyptic universe that Gearbox made.
But I agree with the others that the gunplay in itself and the weight of the guns have a big room for improvement
@kyleforrester87 of course playa.new York is the best city in the 🌎 world.its all gravy.word up son
@arnoldlayne83 true every game that have a sequel is always going to improve.and that game came in 2p12 so yeah .but I love the gunplay.i got acid green gun.the fire orange gun.that purple gun.lightning gun etc.man I'm having fun right now with the guns in borderlands 2.word up son
The B*tch SMG, Conference Call shotgun and Greed pistol in BL2 are to this day some of the best feeling weapons I've used in any game. I love my Destiny 2 hand cannons and Greed is right up there with anything D2 has to offer.
B*tch wipes the floor with any D2 SMG. Pair a Bee shield with Conference Call and just enjoy the carnage, if that doesn't make you grin like an idiot you're dead inside. Borderlands 2's gunplay is fine.

Improvents? All BL3 really needs is to take the best weapons and features from the previous games along with adding a new weapon type. Something new like laser or plasma weapons that reduce enemies into a pile of ashes.
Best features would include high elemental effects, large magazine size, high fire rates, and mods and skills that increase those qualities. Also higher ammo carry amounts and ammo regen like in BL1.
Is there a better weapon than the Hellfire from BL1 from 10 years ago?
An fov slider and weapons held low or holstered will reduce the narrow view and weapons filling too much of the screen are improvements i would like.
@Tasuki - I totally agree with your policy on profanity and in no way did I break your rules. The definition of the (non profane) word as a noun is a female dog, wolf, fox, or otter. Even if you were to use the word in a pejorative sense it still doesn't come close to being profane.
Furthermore you have edited my post to make zero sense. Anyone reading might think, that gun sounds pretty cool, I'll go and get one. Only to find 'The Witch' doesn't exist.
Again, I absolutely agree with the sites no profanity rule but my post did not break it in any way shape or form.
Wouldn't hurt if Borderlands shooting mechanics is as good as Destiny's. That being said, I'd still choose the former over the latter since Destiny's content is kinda rubbish compared to Borderlands.
@Shigurui Shhhhhh, don't question the language moderation. You're absolutely right, but there is zero room for discussion or debate on the matter in the comments. The anti-swearing police have been going overboard for years, treating us like the little children they think they are protecting. Just take the chastisement and move on, you can't win.
@Shigurui Just throw a couple of * in there. They work a motherf**kin' treat.
Just played BL2 for an hour for the first time, and man the gunplay feels archaic. It’s not satisfying at all and I decided to stop playing it. Reading this news is great for BL3. That’s what it should be. Think I’ll buy it now.
I didn't think the gun-play was that bad - maybe lacked a bit of weight to it but it was certainly functional..
@playstation1995
