You know that the DualShock 4 must be a pretty good controller when a company like Google is copying it. Much like the PlayStation 4's primary peripheral, Google's official Stadia controller has symmetrical analogue sticks, a central home button, and, of course, a share button. Oh, sorry, we mean a capture button.
Snark aside, we reckon it's a pretty nice controller, if a little bland looking. Let's just hope that the stick rubber doesn't start to peel off three weeks after you buy the thing, eh?
Okay, that was a cheap shot, but we couldn't resist.

Yea I like it but not the buttons
Looks more like Switch Pro controller to me. Either way I think all the controllers nowadays are very similar and if something strays too far from what we're comfortable with the internet won't take too kindly to it.
I mean capture buttons seem to be a standard now so the only real similarity would be the sticks. The central home button thing began with the 360 iirc too.
What's the button below what I'm guessing is select, opposite the capture button?
A DS4 without the touchpad and presumably the light bar. Lawyers incoming.
At least the sticks are in the right place. Symmetry ftw
Looks pretty Plain
Google is not a innovative company anymore, not since their latest flagship phones (pixel) copying iphone notch and somehow make it worse by making it way bigger with no purpose whatsoever. Last I heard, their latest phone will copy samsung hole punch display.
@TadGhostal But... The Switch pro controller has asymmetrical analogue sticks? That's the whole point!
Seems like a standard controller to me.
Sticks are in the right place but not sure if i like the look of the sticks themselves. I love the rounded ones on the DS4. Won't judge until I've tried it though.
I'm commited to Sony as a platform though. They make the best games and have consistently knocked it out of the park with home consoles even the PS3 still sold 80+ million so i'm sure they will respond. Maybe two versions of the PS5? A streaming device and and a physical one.
I am a playstation guy till the day I die.
There's a lot of space in the middle, because of the small buttons. Other than that, it's okay
Looks more like a Wii U Pro controller then anything resembling a DualShock 4...
@ShogunRok What other options have they left? Like a mirrored version of the Switch/Xbox? Can't imagine how awful that would feel
@ShogunRok It has the analog sticks of the Dualshock, but the way to start, select, and other buttons in the center are laid out...is the Switch Pro Controller note for note, just move the Capture button, as it is directly called on Switch, across.
Sorry.but it looks more like a switch pro controller or Xbox one than it does a ps4!
It looks worse than the DS4 and X1 standard controller.
Honestly take a look at that picture and then look at your DS4. Google have designed a controller that looks worse than a 3rd party knock off. How is that even possible?
Let's hope they copied everything except the bad battery life and awful analog stick material.
Looks like the sort of rubbish knock off third party PS4 controller your nan would get you for Christmas cause she didn't know any better bless her.
google making the next streaming failure Onlive 2.0
That controller looks awful. They should have copied the Xbox controller. Hopefully the battery life is good at least
This is a bit of a stretch imo. The controller looks alright though, if a little basic. I think they had to go with something clean and familiar, particularly seeing as it doesn't look like they're gonna be developing their own games like Nintendo.
Fwiw didn't they say that other controllers could be used with their platform anyway? So if you prefer the Dualshock 4 or the Xbox controller, I think you'll likely be able to use that via bluetooth as well.
@roe Yes you can use other controllers but. The main point of the controller is it connects directly to the Internet itself in order to cut latency. If you something else you’ll get more input lag.
DualShock 4 is Sony's best controller to date, but I think there are much more signature features to it than "symmetrical sticks" (why not compare Stadia to Sixaxis for good measure, then?) and a "capture button" that even Switch incorporated.
Ugh, I just can’t get over the fact that the Dreamcast way of positioning ABXY has become the standard since the inception of the original XBox...just why?
Why has a knock-off of a knock-off become a standard? How?
It’s as if it had the PS symbols, but with O in place of X and Triangle in place of Square, it just isn’t right!
Luckily, Sony’s trademarked those (I think, I’m not 100% sure so forgive if I’m wrong), so this kind of shenanigans won’t happen.
Sigh...
Sorry, rant over.
On a more related note, I agree with those who say it looks like a cheap third party controller.
The design is not bad per se, it could even be cool, but the materials don’t look up to par (looking especially at you, D-pad).
But then again, it’s just a picture so I hope I’m wrong.
I'm open to new things and all but sorry Google this looks like a total flop. I mean just looking at how MS have been playing catch-up since emphasizing the Xbox One as a Media Device at the start rather than caring about games, hyping Kinect, 900p. And then we have Stadia, and you emphasize streaming...is that supposed to be an incentive... clearly Google hasn't really studied the gamesbiz.

It's got the Dualshock4 stick layout, the Dreamcast/Xbox ABXY layout and the Switch Pro Controller everything else. Google doing its best to try and appease everybody. We'll see when it's out if it's a quality controller or if it feels like a cheap toy.
Looks more like the evil lovechild of the switch pro and Xbox one controller to me.
Not impressed really. Google trying to act like they are inventing something new whilst doing nothing different and this whole thing just doesn’t excite me at all.
Thanks but no thanks google
@themcnoisy Yeah, that looks bad. A high-school design to be improved upon. I’d lose interest just with this controller.
The design is too... clean and untextured. It doesn't look like a real thing meant to be used.
I actually really like it. You guys really aren’t fans?
I like it because it looks like a ps4 controller. 😉
Looks like every other controller on the market basically. Every controller has 4 main buttons, 2 joy sticks, 4 shoulder buttons, a start/select/home button, and a d-pad. The placement changes somewhat and companies change the names of the buttons, but that is it.
All modern controllers copy the XB360 controller. I think it looks fine, and I'm excited to try a controller with WiFi. Save your snark and talk substance.
Doesn’t look a controller I would use for fighting games, but everything else should be fine.
It looks good like a combination of a PS4 and Xbone controller
Say w what you want about Ouya but atleast they took guts by not using the same Alphabet-signage for their controller layout, wish other companies get more creative with that.
It's ergonomically more like the Switch Pro controller and most controllers have some form of a capture button these days. I wouldn't say this is copying. And even if so, each company has been copying the best features of its rivals for years. That's why the Dualshock 4 is the first major revision for Playstation controllers (other than the introduction of analogue sticks) and the controllers all look similar this generation.
@get2sammyb
It looks kind of 'cheap' and is really just a mish-mash of the other controllers on the market. But, I'd agree we should wait until it's out there on the market before giving a full judgement. There are people who use the freaking joycon as their main Switch controller even in docked mode and I can't imagine this controller being much more uncomfortable to use than that.
They cloned the Switch pro controller but messed up the left stick position. What a shame. It will be just as bad as the dualshock 1/2/3/4 (they are basically the same)
Looks pretty awful and basic tbh. The doesn't send out the right message or create any excitement I'm afraid.
@RedMageLanakyn Well my PS4 stick are still good older then 1,5 years what are you talking about?
@Rhaoulos What bad about these controllers?
@DerMeister yup, don't know what people want more than this... If they changed too much, everyone would complain.
My biggest gripe is that it has the Dreamcast/Xbox layout instead of tried-and-true Nintendo layout.
For me it faces the same problem as "games as a service" in itself does; It just lacks character. I get they are trying to play it safe but if your going to try and break into the console market you may as well whack your balls out on the table and make a statement. Stadia is a terrible name. Sounds like a stripper with bullet wounds and missing teeth (my kinda gal but still a poo name). Time will tell but it'll have to be excellent value to receive money from this particular tight fisted scrimper.
@Orpheus79V I'm guessing it's Google assistant....
@Flaming_Kaiser There were several reports of thumbsticks going bad during the initial launch of the PS4, I've seen a couple in person, but never experienced it myself.
The plastic core sticks out through the rubber cover on the outside after a couple of years of use. I haven't seen it on recent DS4s, but it was definitely a thing at launch.
@RedMageLanakyn Ah yes i heard but they fixed it so its good now and they replaced the bad ones i heard. 😁
It's likely copying the ps4 controller because it's the most popular. Though without the touchpad, I was never reminded of the dual shock when I saw this one.
