We've been tracking the commercial success of Marvel's Spider-Man since its September launch, and as expected, it's been a sales juggernaut. In addition to becoming one of PS4's most beloved exclusives, the game has been performing extremely well at retail, whether that's via brick and mortar shops or the PlayStation Store. It toppled God of War as the fastest selling PlayStation exclusive, and now, Sony's given us a clearer indication of sales to date.
In a new report from the company, as of 25th November 2018, Marvel's Spider-Man has sold through over 9 million copies worldwide, including physical and digital. This is an amazing result for any game, let alone an exclusive title. It still has some way to go to beat The Last of Us as Sony's best selling title, which has sold over 17 million copies if you put the PS3 and PS4 versions together. Still, selling over 9 million in just three months puts it firmly on the right track, and we wouldn't be surprised to see Spidey crowned the biggest selling PlayStation exclusive ever in the future.
It paints a pretty picture for the inevitable sequel on PS5. With a well received new story to follow, an extremely good gameplay structure to build on, and almost guaranteed sales success, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is definitely something to look forward to.

Wow. Activision really dropped the ball with Spidey.
Their loss is Sony’s gain.
Would like to see a sequel and a game from Insomniac too that's about other Marvel hero! (Not Iron Man please)
Deserved sales, it was a very good game!
Absolutely incredible sales. Game must be making Sony, Insomniac and Marval money hand over fist. Great to see a quality single player game do so well.
Congrats to sony, insomniacs, and marvel
@Fight_Teza_Fight I don't think activision want to make this kind of expensive open world single player games again, it's either AA remakes like crash, spyro, and ctr or cod/destiny type of games, which is fine by me since I like those remakes. Sekiro is the exception though.
cmon disney just give star wars to sony
@wiiware Their loss. These are COD numbers. 9million on a single platform in 2 1/2 months is incredible.
@JoeBlogs lol im just talkin about the star wars game, spider-man outsold swbf2, its about time to give star wars to a publisher that cares lol
@JoeBlogs Well i see it performing quite well with a good company behind it. I think Disney will only see a better IP and its good advertisement.
These numbers are RIDICULOUS.
Again, I say to all those publishers who think we need 'subscription models', 'multiplayer platforms ',' microtransactons', etc.
If you just make a really good single player story game, it will sell bucket loads.
We've seen this with God of War too this year and also Witcher 3.
Hopefully now all that old claptrap about single player games being dead from earlier in the year can be forgotten about.
(I know fortnite is also huge, that game itself seems to be burying all other MP games around it, look at poor Battlefield V this year, all the more reason to push for single player until it burns itself out).
@Futureshark That's not true, though. Spider-man is the exception. Plenty of single player games are released and they mostly either do decently or flop. You can't draw any conclusions from the success of a few games. You need to look at the bigger picture. And the fact that at least in the UK 80% of the sales were digital, despite physical games selling better, shows just how much money is spent on microtransactions and the like.
The message companies are taking is clear. If you want success, make a single player game, but if you want to be set for life, make a multiplayer game (in both cases nothing is guaranteed). I'm sure Fortnite alone has made more than all of Sony's exclusives combined. I suspect other mp games like COD are also doing great thanks to microtransactions.
congratulation to Spider-Man.NYC represent.word up son
@Futureshark Yeah I don't think that is true. Spider-Man also had an absolutely gigantic production budget, a massive marketing budget, huge names like Sony and Insomniac behind it... It's definitely not as straightforward as "make good game, sell tons of units".
We see loads of great games flop every single year.
Wish Sony had Star Wars license and we get the same treatment of Star Wars as spider-man and it would've sold double the amount of this already. EA only cares about MP and even that MP sucks and filled with micro transactions.
@Lekzie1 You know i’ve been thinking the same thing, disney and playstation have a great relationship. With EA screwing up star wars and spider-man ps4 doing so well, i can see disney doing a deal with playstation after EA contract ends.
Best selling exclusive of 2018 by a country mile.
Activision losing IP is the greatest thing to happen to the industry since sliced bread.
its probably well over 10 or 11m now, it's not like it suddenly stopped selling like hotcakes on 25th november.
Those numbers are insane! Congrats to Sony and Insomniac for taking the risk on the “dying single player experience”.
If DC and Marvel get their games produced by Sony game studios, let us never suffer an average comic to console game ever again! Congrats insomniac and Marvel!
@bbq_boy Shame Marvel isn't getting their games made just by Sony studios.
There's that Square Enix one allegedly, and we probably don't want to mention the next game Spider-Man is in...
What a great news, this great games deserves every sale.
Can’t wait for the sequel.
Btw, Spider-Man won 15 GOTY awards.
