Just Cause 4’s retail sales got off to the slowest start in the series thus far, even failing to improve upon its 2006 predecessor. That’s according to the latest UK sales chart, which comes with the big fat caveat that digital data isn’t included. GamesIndustry.biz hypothesises that with outlets like the PlayStation Store added it may have improved upon the PlayStation 2 entry’s tally, but this clearly isn’t a particularly great result.
With most of the major launches now out, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate dominated the best-sellers list as many would have already anticipated. Red Dead Redemption 2 stuck around in second, while FIFA 19 dropped down into third position. The remainder of the top ten was occupied by familiar faces, like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, and the boxed Fortnite: Deep Freeze Bundle. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds enjoyed a 321 per cent sales increase on the back of the PlayStation 4 version’s debut, while Darksiders III disappeared entirely.

nice to see spyro still doing well.
Had a cheeky wee play of Smash before I wrapped it for Christmas and it's utterly brilliant. Hopefully the Joker announcement leads to a Persona 5 director's cut like the previous 2 games!
No surprises there. Really envious of Smash cos it just seems such a celebration of nearly all things Nintendo that I wish PlayStation had something either very similar (that was done really well and with care) or something else entirely.
@AdamNovice I mean they did
They just screwed it up and killed it...
@AdamNovice how would you envision a new PlayStation All Stars...
To be fair they’ve been iterating on Smash for 20 years now. It’d be almost impossible for a newcomer to come in and match what that series has become pound for pound.
My personal opinion is that if they want to make something like that they need to think outside the box and do it differently.
Sony and Nintendo both do their respective things very well. I don't think Sony needs its own Smash any more than Nintendo needs its own God of War.
@get2sammyb it requires ambition + passion... yes they do gotta think outside the box but they also need characters that Smash doesn’t have... also gotta actually dig deep into the history of PlayStation and have characters that resonate with PlayStation fans from both 1st & 3rd Party...
Just to jump into the convo, i enjoyed PS All-Stars but i would like to see Sony try and make an RPG mash-up with all their characters, something similar to Kingdom Hearts. i think that would work better for them than another beat-em-up, and i think that would play to their strengths more too to be honest.
@Derpie1 I just think trying to copy that style of gameplay is a mistake. Either take the concept in a different direction or don’t bother.
It’s like trying to make a new football game. What’s the point? FIFA has been iterated on so much that it’s always going to eat your lunch.
@get2sammyb i can see them going for a more cinematic fighter cus this is Sony
I can see a story mode that’s a bit ambitious kinda like Subspace Embassary from Smash Brawl but more Story and cutscenes rather than running around... you prob would go from fight to fight but they’d be connected and prob the characters would have a form of development w each other and connection. It’d be wierd/surreal but it’d feel like PlayStation has a form of universe of characters similar to Nintendo just a different feel tho.
smash bros is playable I suppose but It frustrates the hell out of me that these average gaming experiences sell shed loads whilst the likes of Arms is forgotten about. Its a much better experience and had me grinning ear to ear. Smash is just a bit pants playing alone. Maybe it's just me going by its aggregated scores but it feels cumbersome, it seems like I'm forever trying to get myself back on platforms with too much going on at times and not really knowing why I've been hit off.
I think there's something wrong with me but Zelda, God of War and now this have all failed to pull me in this year where as less acclaimed titles like Arms, Spiderman, Yakuza, Pro evo and Game dev story have.
@themcnoisy It just sounds like your taste is changing. Nothing really wrong with that. I love Smash, but even I can say it's not for everyone.
@themcnoisy 2 of the titles you said are highly acclaimed and sell fairly well...
Titles: Spider Man And Yakuza...
Smash is my game, no doubt about that. That PlayStation All Star game on PS3 was just... ok. If Sony wanted to take another crack at that I would at least try it. Maybe go with a 2d Fighter route? I can get down on that. Kinda separate from the Smash gameplay.
@themcnoisy Spiderman is awesome and one of the few games I've played straight through to the end without being distracted for quite some time, it's also the game that made me pick up a pad for the first time in about 6 months. Smash looks fine but I've played and still own most of the others and know I wouldn't play it for more than 10 minutes before never touching it again. As for Zelda, decent game but pretty poor as an actual Zelda title and easily one of my least favourite of the franchise.
To be honest the most fun I've had recently is with VR and that has given me that spark and sense of wonder that I haven't really felt with gaming on a consistent basis for a long time. Particularly Astro Bot making me feel like that wide eyed child playing his Megadrive/SNES or that first time playing Mario 64 with that jump from 16 bit side scrolling to the brave new world of 3D platforming. Perhaps that's why I'm looking forward to Resident Evil 2 so much as it reminds me of how I used to feel about gaming all of the time and not just now and then as I do these days, or maybe im just a grumpy old man 😂
Oh and I'm not sure which Yakuza game you've played but try Yakuza 0 if you haven't, any game in which you can teach a sex worker to do her job properly in a children's park deserves to be played 😉
@carlos82 I've played through Yakuza 0, k1 and k2. I too have PSVR.
Spiderman is a triumph, its fresh and fun.
@themcnoisy
'less acclaimed titles like Spider-Man'???
Funny way to put it.q
Just Cause 4 does have one of the coolest easter eggs ive ever seen though.
@get2sammyb Nope, I think you got it wrong not copying the Smash Bros gameplay was their biggest mistake they actually tried their on different style of gameplay and honestly wasn't that good, I mean if they were gonna copy the game then they should've just copy the gameplay and improved it not make it worse
Edit: A good example is Crash Team Racing it's basically Mario Kart but they make the gameplay better and on top of that it has like a story mode where you could go and drive around collect stuff and even go against bosses no other game to this day has surpassed that game on content (no even the newest Mario kart game because it's the same just new tracks and characters with minor tweaks)
@get2sammyb Sammy is River Plate.
I went through various emotions with Smash over the weekend, overall though I am actually finding it really enjoyable and I'm glad I spent the money on it. I'm also glad I went digital as it's the kind of game I will chip away at when I am bored. I know some people are moaning that not all the characters are available from the get go but for someone like me unlocking them is part of the fun. I wish Mario Kart 8 Deluxe didn't have them all open from the start, either.
"PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds enjoyed a 321 per cent sales increase on the back of the PlayStation 4 version’s debut"
Huh...people have been telling me that this game is dead.
@kyleforrester87 while I appreciate the idea of only having the first game's characters unlocked it's kind of a chore to unlock so many characters and on the other hand the stage selection screen is an even bigger (beautiful) mess than it ever was. so I would have preferred the traditional method of unlocking fighters and stages.
@manu0 oh don’t worry not a crazy amount of people bought it
or we are all fed up with series especially last one which was a technicall mess
I can't say I am too surprised about JC4. JC3 had poor performance issues on console and repetitive game-play. It had no memorable story and the same basic premise as JC2. I would expect that anyone who had bought JC3 would probably wait and see if they had improved performance and what, if anything, the cost of those improvements would be.
They may have improved performance, but obviously at the expense of visual clarity. On PS4, the game can hit full HD, but rarely does and often drops down to 720p and still doesn't hold a solid 30fps. The Pro can hit 1440p but tends to play at 1080p - the 'good' news though is that generally holds 30fps well - according to DF - the best. The X (for any that maybe interested) can run at 2160p but spends more time at 1440p with the odd frame rate drop here and there - slightly more than the Pro does. That, combined with mediocre reviews, lacking any real innovation, the same basic plot and repetitive game-play loop really isn't going to shift games.
I am not surprised Darksiders 3 dropped so quickly either for that matter.
I only own 1 game in the top 10 at the moment and 2 of the others would I consider for the right price but not overly bothered about, and the rest don't really interest me at all....
@kyleforrester87 I'm enjoying it, gameplay is so tight but it's my first smash game ever and it's definitely got a difficulty factor too it, I won't be unlocking all the characters for a bit!! I'm loving the platform element!
@Derpie1 Personally I wouldn't do another Smash type game again cos it'll just be seen as a Smash rip off again. If they want it to be a fighting game I'd go to Arc System Works (guilty gear and BlazBlue) give them a decent budget and say "do for us what you did for Dragon Ball". Alternatively I like @Toadie idea of a RPG Mash up. It'll probably would have to be a JRPG though but maybe someone like the Ni No Kuni devs would be ideal.
"But no digital could be key"
Plus the poor reviews probably didn't help.
Surely the other big news here is that GTA 5 is nowhere to be found in the top 10! What a slouch!
Hitman and Darksiders really have suffered this holiday season.
I finished just cause 4 and I can see why it hasnt sold well. While I had fun theres alot of repetition, uninspired missions and the endgame is boring. Plus the hurricane mission is a huge disappointment.
Doesnt help when you put in the marketing a quote from jacksepticeye. A guy who says nearly every game he plays is fun and isnt a reviewer lol
@Danloaded Just Cause 4 looks like a improvement over Just Cause 3, but I didn’t bother playing it as a patch is coming to fix everything in less than 2 weeks.

@BAMozzy I installed Just Cause 4, but didn’t bother to play it since a patch is coming out to fix everything in less than 2 weeks. I loved the 2nd one and was very disappointed with the 3rd.

@Badboyfx86 its an improvement sure and its released in a much better state than 3. But cant fix the main story missions in patches. If I could see other people on the leaderboard and they fix the graphics il get on with the busiwork thats left for me to do
@Badboyfx86 They maybe able to fix the performance issues - maybe so it doesn't drop as much on both resolution and frame rates, but they can't fix the boring repetitive game-play with the same basic plot as previous games - not without replacing the whole game!. When they 'fix' it, they won't fix the problems with the story and game-play - just the way the game performs!
UK. It’s so mainstream it’s like reading the music charts.
