Good news, everyone: the ability to make in-game purchases in Red Dead Online has been switched on. As part of Rockstar's latest blog post, the publisher confirmed that, with patch 1.05, the microtransaction store has been enabled in the online portion of Red Dead Redemption 2. The below image, uploaded to ResetEra, shows the prices for the various packs of gold bars available:
You'll still be able to earn cash and gold yourself, of course, and doing so isn't quite as painful as it used to be, thanks to a recent update rebalancing things. What do you think of Red Dead Online's microtransactions? Will you be splashing out, or earning your gold bars the old fashioned way? Don't forget your pitchforks in the comments below.

Not playing the online part, so my rdr2 game is mtx free
Good grief, $50 for something which costs them nothing at all.
No way will I ever join in with this kind of crap. Sickening, optional or not.
Not even attacking this with a barge pole. Just so disappointed with the gaming practices taken by so many companies nowadays, so just loading up DooM ][ on Pc and working through that.
As long as I am able to get everything by only playing, it doesn't really bother me. Honestly GTAV and RDO get boring fairly fast so the grind actually gives me something to do between all the senseless murder lol
Just the idea of offering a $100 in-game purchase in a $60 game hurts me a little inside...
Not spending a penny on this microtransaction sh..
This is an absolutely disgusting business practice and one of the reasons I rarely play online games. Let's be clear though, this isn't just Rockstar and it has infested gaming over the last few years. If it wasn't for VR, PS4/Nintendo exclusives been free of this kind of bulls**t I'd be pretty much done with modern gaming, I have more than enough games to never genuinely need to buy another
RDR2 has been such a regretfull digital purchase already...the story and characters just haven’t engaged my in the slightest and I’m on chapter 4...the greed on show here is quite ridiculous!!
I'd rather buy some McVitie's Gold Bars for a quid. So fit.
Another reason why it was right for RDR2 to not win GOTY.
Never even loaded up the online portion of this game
Absolutely ridiculous practices by many game publishers these days... I wish this trend would stop!
@AdamNovice it wouldn't even feature in my top 20. Long drawn out campeign with little character personality development nearly made me sell a few times before I completed it. Glad I finninshed it tho but wouldn't get it again.
Rockstar: "WE NEED MORE MONEH."
one of the most boring and overhyped game this year
I really freaking hope when you said good news everyone you were being sarcastic.
Its silly. Rockstar dont need the money. They have made back the costs of development many many times already. All this does is split the community. Its pay to win effectively. I have no issue with developers or pubishers including cosmetic items for sale. That is completely their prerogative.
But this fundamentally unbalances the online portion of the game. Its not surprising, but it is so so disapointing. In the past rockstar releases would have parodied this in their games, rather than supporting such nonsense. A real shame, but unfortunately that appears to be the direction of travel for gaming these days. Dont even get me started on street fighter 5!.
I for 1 wont be supporting such transactions, and like others on this thread, i am so delighted by the response that God of War is receiving. This hasnt lived up to RDR 1 yet, let alone GoW/Game of the Year
Loved the singleplayer so I'm like whatever.
After GTA online, who didn't see this coming though?
@Kidfunkadelic83 I wonder how come so many gamers share this view, yet almost every single reviewer thinks it's a perfect game or an experience that deserves a perfect score. I mean, what are the odds?
@Rob_230 Agreed. Generally speaking, I sympathize with developers, but considering how successful Rockstar's games are, this is pure greed.
Of course you can.
Rock$tar, Activi$ion Blizzard, Epay, Ubi$oft.
Well Pushsquare is this a 10/10 no it is not. The 10/10 was a joke anyway. A small thing not so great controls. 👍😂🤣
Now we know why they put in the microtran$action$ after the release. 😁
$ 99 for fake currency its should be a crime. Im sick and tired of these criminal amounts of money.
I'm not going to defend the joke of an economy the beta started with or the current prices for stuff in GTA Online but seriously, whether Rockstar have a ton of money or not they are a business and they're not going to keep RD Online's servers running without a longterm way for the players to help fund them. Expecting Rockstar to maintain and continue to build an online game for nothing is ridiculous.
@carlos82 I feel your pain it makes me sick how greed destroys these games and the sites keep covering for sickening business practices. 😔
The game of the year for Sammy looks like a mobile free to play game even if it's only the online portion of the game still looks disgusting
@naruball I suppose it's all down to personal taste really. I for one have got a very short attention span and something needs to grab me or have some sort of flair about it to keep me interested. IMO GTA is a much better game due to the more engaging personalities of the characters but obvioustly RDR2 is alot better to look at as its 5 years newer. Persona 5 would have been my number 1 game tho but some people cant stand JRPG's just like I don't like multiplayer games, well the majority anyway. I need to feel like I'm working towards something in a game like an ending or a progressing story not a scope or a new gun aka battlefield or COD. Something like Borderlands co op would be great for me tho but I'm not geared up on good co-op multiplayer.
I read reviews but take most more of guideline as I've had too many games off the back of reviews and not been too keen on them.
@Gatatog Please tell me you are joking and you think this is normal. $99 or in Europe €99 of ingame currency it should be a crime. How much money did they make in a less then in a week after the release. It how clueless people are.
@wiiware i'm just gonna delete the game data now as it's become a eyesore, i don't expect any new content for us singleplayer fossils anytime soon.
but seriously microtransactions for a beta of all things.
@Flaming_Kaiser you should be more ill from the likes of fortnite that make billions from the "cosmetics"
@sham8nix it's not gonna stop anytime soon, the more the whales support it the more it grows and festers.
@huyi Free to play or a €60 game so that a wrong comparison. And look at MHW small microtransactions that dont make my stomach turn.
@Flaming_Kaiser If you don't like it, that's fine, not everyone has to agree with it. Hell, even I don't agree with splashing out £100 on just in-game currency. However, it doesn't change the fact that those microtransactions help with development and maintenance costs. Why do you think MMOs had subscription fees for so many years before being filled up with cosmetic optional purchases?
Arent there guns that cost around 250 gold? Ssoooo that gun costs $75 US ($95 here in canada) ??!!??!! WOW. must be a pretty cool gun
@Gatatog Guild Wars MMO you pay for the every new part of the game no subscription a new part of the game and free PVP. Wait where did i hear of this fancy way of finance oh the OLD games. 😃
This has nothing to do with content drops its just greed. Good to see they brain washed already. 😁
So its Firstparty titles and quality singleplayer games and some nice RPG's. The bubble will burst in the end just like in the 80's. Keep defending it they are nearing the ceiling and then it all crashes down. 👍
@gatatog It's true that things like this can cover costs for online games but a lot of people have been given every reason to suspect it's just pure greed. Especially when companies like EA said taking mtx out of Battlefront 2 wouldn't effect their bottom line, pretty much confirming that there was literally no need for them to be in the first place. In the case of Rockstar, I'd ask that is there really any need to be selling £75 Gold bars to justify Red Dead Online? If they just sold cosmetic skins for your character, horse and guns for a few quid each I think a lot more people would accept it but this is basically paying to skip grinding which shouldn't be in the game design at all.
Even with all the money they made already, Rockstar include microtransactions, what a joke. After GTA V, this will be normal to every game made by Rockstar.
@AdamNovice It's breaking the leveling for profit.
@AdamNovice Now this is an opinion I can understand and it's an opinion I shared considering the state of RDOs economy when the beta launched and how the inflation in GTAO made more recent additions insanely difficult to pay for unless you bought the currency. I guess the optimistic part of me sees them using a separate currency for RDO rather than GTAs all encompassing $ and hopes that the gold bars will just serve as a way for people with less time to skip to the good stuff, and those of us who play normally will be able to get everything through normal play (though hopefully without insane amounts of grinding). I'm kinda hoping that the changes they've implemented to the economy already are also a sign that they're more open to making it a little fairer than the insane prices for GTAs better stuff. I could just be kidding myself and they could just end up being as greedy but hey.
They allready said gta5 mtx made crazy amounts of money and that they would surely implement it in rdr2. So no surprises there. I knew what to expect.
Unfortunately Rockstar have the perfect idea. Build an amazing single player once in a generation game without micros for the hard core and a money fueled souless online component for the casuals.
Listen up EA, Ubisoft, Blizzard etc
Build an amazing single player once in a generation game without micros for the hard core.
Dear Push Square. Can you please award Red Dead Redemption 2 as your game of the year just so we can buzz off everybody throwing a tantrum and losing their sh*t? Ta.
@Gatatog @AdamNovice yeah nobody expects these online games to be completely free but there has to be much better ways then making games grindy to accommodate these. EA were a great example of the greed of these companies and the effect it has on their games as they had to rebalance their games after removing them. Worryingly for this game the CEO of Take-Two interactive who is quoted as saying that GTAV's players have been under monetised on a per user basis and this is for the most profitable piece of entertainment ever!
These microtransactions are there to line the pockets of investors and absolutely nothing else.
Got done with the single player last month (which I really loved apart from the irksome realism stuff), and after reading about the deliberately unbalanced economy in the RDO beta, decided I wasn't touching the online component with a 50ft bargepole! I can do without the platinum on this occasion I reckon. I don't support MTX in single player games (except for when it's decent story dlc or dynamic themes), so certainly not gonna start now with a game mode which thinks it's ok to charge such exorbitant prices...obvs expected MTX in RDO, but these prices are just excessive and greed-driven, so it's not for me.
@carlos82 OK yeah, the CEO saying something like that is incredibly messed up and worrying. I don't know, maybe I'm just an idiot but like I said, I want to believe that, with the economic differences between GTAO and RDO and the fact that they've already accepted that they needed to rebalanced it, I'm hoping they can hold off from requiring RDO to just be another cash cow.
@Gatatog only time will tell and I'm not just trying to pick on Rockstar and this game as it's the AAA games industry in general. I'll just say that I've yet to see one of these games be anything but a cash cow and it's quite significant that both this and Black OPS 4 added their microtransactions after launch meaning they can't be mentioned in any reviews.
Then again if you're enjoying it that's all that really matters. For me it's just this practice that pushes me away from these games and luckily there are still a few left untouched
@Flaming_Kaiser I was never likely to play the online and frankly I thought the controls were a bit rubbish in the campaign I've yet to finish. Never mind, I'm happy enough playing Yakuza 0 and so far everything seems to be included 😉
I've enjoyed SP part and much enjoying online part. I do not care about micro-transactions in R* games as they are just optional. And it's not my option, because I'm greedy, I like to see a carrot on the stick and I like to get it myself and without mtx assistance. Yea, mtx in R* games are just assisting toll (would you blame users and owners of motorway toll of greediness an laziness?) not more than that. Some people are really short of time to be bothered to make the same mission tens of times and hunting the same animals thousands of times and I do understand them if they prefer to pay once a month instead of getting the next type of gun year later with their gaming pace.
@carlos82 😃
Just started Horizon Zero Dawn had it on the release i love it. I get to much games and i have to pubish myself clearing out my backlog. 😁
25 Gold Bars cost $9.99 How in game time will it take you to earn 25 Gold Bars?
@ApostateMage
I second this motion!
My soapbox is ready. Screw microtransactions.
@JohnKarnes Last I read, I think it was apparently eight hours just to earn one gold bar. Not sure about now since they've reduced the time needed.
@GKO900 yeah with major fundamental gameplay problems and outdated mission design that rockstar has been using for over a decade now but it’s alright because the games pretty and has a great open world smh. It is sickening how much excusing Sammy and the rest of the staff do for this game to justify its 10 and all but guaranteed goty from them. No game with the gameplay problems of rdr 2 should win goty and now with the online having ridiculously priced mts it’s even more unworthy but hey at least the rightful goty GOW won the forums goty award
@WanderingBullet I think energy would be better spent talking about economy of the game. Clearly no one cares about Micro-Transactions, even if they took them out it would still be 8 hours per gold bar! :')
Shakes fist, whilst thinking about the old days
So was everyone just waiting for this to be announced to get mad about it? Im pretty sure we all knew this was gonna be in the online portion of the game. They made a great single player game, defiantly worth $60. Im playing it and i love it, its not perfect but its real good. But we all knew there would be MT included in the online portion. Why act shocked?
Ha, good one Rockstar
Meh. I dont even know what to do with the gold bars I have
@ellsworth004
Thats the part when gamers scream like babies while they were calling a simple suit request for a certain game 'entitled'.
Seriously question anyone who purchases this bs... I will mail you an invisible rope and plant you the imaginary tree... Goood grief!
Honestly the single player itself was worth the money and multiplayer has been fun with friends
@dark_knightmare2 what's wrong with the mission design? sure they have used it for years but I would say that because it's a good system
@JJ2 funny how a few weeks ago rdr2 was the holy grail of games. And now rockstar is trash.
Rockstar is secretly run by the O'driscolls.
I remember paying £50 for Link to The Past when it came out. If this practice, which passes me by as I dont play multiplayer, keeps the price for games in that ball park then I'm happy with it.
I knew it wouldn't be to long dam here we go again it's shark cards allover again. $99.99 woooooo extort the gamers or what.
It's such a shame i wonder if they are going to string this game out for 6 years as well with shark cards.
yes yes yes. what a bargain. Just have to wait till that nigerian prince sends me my $10 million then im all over that.
@ellsworth004 Not all MTX are the same.
Sure we all knew it was coming but it doesn't mean people have to like it. I don't think this is worth getting angry but just another example of gameplay being changed to drive monetisation.
@naruball what do u mean?
I Do not so pay your self online people your problem .
There's an extra free 15 gold bars if you play RDO atm. (though I still don't know what to do with it haha)
@ellsworth004 "But we all knew there would be MT included in the online portion." That even though we knew there'd be MTX, we didn't know what kind. They can provide variety or they can make the game pay to win. When it's the latter, it's a deal breaker for many people while the former is fine.
@naruball i agree with u there, cosmetic mtx are fine. But after seeing how gta online worked, i assumed rdr2 would be very similar, pay to win.
@Gmork___
Actually.... no. There are not. The most expensive item in the game at the moment costs 116 gold. All guns ingame cost $0-500 of the games regular currency, which, if bought early with gold, would cost 0-30 gold bars; or 10 dollars irl.
