Spyro Reignited Trilogy sees all three of Insomniac Games’ classic platformers scaled up to PlayStation 4 standard, and it turns out that takes up a lot of hard drive space. Images posted on ResetEra by someone who sourced an early copy show that the game’s initial installation only takes up 31.5GB – but with patches applied you’ll be pushing double that.
Bizarrely, the day one patch is around 19GB, but the total file size ends up at approximately 67.5GB, so there may be some compression to the update going on here. Regardless, you’re going to need a lot of spare space on your console – but what else is new in that department? Are you going to have to make room for the purple fire breather?

Ridiculous. How did we go from maybe 1 game a year that’s to big for the blu ray discs to all games in the second half of a year?
Only game that handled it the right way was RDR2 with the double discs.
@darkswabber It's strange. Looks like all publishers agreed on just not caring about the file sizes too much anymore. Maybe we reached the digital/physical tipping point?
@Kidfried @darkswabber we all know why games are getting so big, 4k and it really isn't needed right now, yes 4k looks good but that's all, games were fine before all this 4k nonsense, they still looked great even at 1080p HD
besides most console gamers don't even have 4k TV yet anyway
@FullbringIchigo People said this about HD televisions to be fair.
@darkswabber perhaps this is what we're to expect as we approach the end of the generation:
(1) Games that max out or outdo the capabilities of the standard (PS4, Xbox One) consoles and stress the enhanced consoles.
(2) Perhaps developers have come to a point where they just don't care about squeezing assets onto a 'too small' Blu-Ray disc anymore, because of the rise of digital downloading as the definitive way gamers purchase their games. It's like they're saying, "you want to play our game, go get a bigger hard drive."
At this point gen 9 will be the last gen to use optical media.
Makes me glad we finally upgraded our internet speeds.
@Orpheus79V yeah I do think that's a distinct possibility with all the recent developments from Sony and especially Microsoft. I just hope that the internet speeds and infrastructure upgrading keeps up with all of that.
@get2sammyb OH don't get me wrong 4k will become the norm i just think right now it's not really needed, maybe next gen or the one after
it's why ALL 4k upgrades should be optional and downloaded from the PS Store, then those who have the equipment can have it but everybody else won't be stuck with it to the point where it can actually make some games play worse on base systems
It's cos of the 4k assets that have been churned out that's probably pushing huge file sizes. At this rate next gen needs to 2 to 3TB minimum
It's easy to blame it on the 4K textures, but I'm willing to bet there's also a big lack of optimisation and compression. Publishers don't care about that, get it out as soon as possible, it's all about money. That's why the big publishers are willing to push out broken games on release.
meh i don't get the 4k hype.
like is that realy a step that is needed or so important? i get the evolution to HD gaming was a huge deal, but now we are at the point of graphical power that 4k just seems like a novelty that only a select few ask for.
so yeah making the 4k assets a optional download instead of a forced one that automatically increases install size is a better way to handle it. afterall most of the install base won't be able to use that 4k stuff anyway since they don't have a 4k device.
also is 4k in a game with a cartoony artstyle realy a worty bonus point?
i can see why some people want it in games with a more realistic artstyle but spyro has a cartoony artstyle making 4k kinda pointless imo.
I'm never really short on space and don't feel the need to have all 200+ of my games downloaded at a time, but even still that seems a bit excessive. That's bigger than Spiderman, Horizon, MG5 etc etc.
nothing gets me going like a file size discussion
@jdv95 and yeah 4K is great. Like really great. Not in a nerdy "oh my gawd more pixels" kind of way. It just genuinely looks awesome. For both realistic, cartoony and all other styles. That's not to say there is a problem with SD or HD, but the higher the res, the better, and yes - it's very much noticeable.
@kyleforrester87 'Oh no we've run out of news stories!'
'Haven't we got any more PlayStation Classic photos we can squeeze out?'
'Nope, used the last of em yesterday!'
'..... I know, we can dig around the internet for a file size story'
I assume that is how it works in the Push Square offices... 😂
Woo don't have enough hard drive space for it!
I'm kind of hoping someone I know buys this then I can borrow it, play it, delete it. That's what I did with the Crash Trilogy.
@JohnnyShoulder ahhh I don't want to knock em, but yeah file size "news" doesn't do it for me. Games have always got bigger and bigger, who cares?
"Oh but you care enough to come on here and post about it don't you"
Yeah - shut up!
For the people saying this is a lame story, it’s actually helped me decide to hold off getting it for a bit! I was on the fence due to the whole disc thing, but now knowing how big it will be in total, it’ll definitely have to wait until I’ve finished RDR2 & AC Oddyssey!
@kyleforrester87 I see 4K (and HDR) a bit like VR. I would really love to sample it, spend a bit of time with it (not in a shop) and experience how great it is. However, I don’t have the cash to splash out on the equipment so I won’t go out of my way to sample it. I know that if I do, I’ll just have to spend loads of cash to get it!
@GravyThief That's fair enough. I can tell I'm missing out with VR but I'm just not ready to get on board with that yet. Ultimately you are missing out on 4K. But is it a big deal? Not really, like I say SD and HD are fine and I'm sure you'll make the upgrade one day.
Yes exactly. I’m very happy with HD (I actually only went to 1080p from 720p 18 months ago!) but at the same time I’m not going to pretend that 4K and HDR aren’t a noticeable change and big step up, just because I don’t have it.
I look forward to the time when a half decent OLED/4K/HDR TV set is in the sub £500 price range, as I’ll definitely jump on board then.
That's a big nope for a disc buy for me. All 3 games should be on the disc as far as I'm concerned.
Some retailers listed it as a multi-disc game, was that a mistake? How many discs are included?
@JohnnyShoulder yeah, if only the PS4 controller batteries lasted that long!
Sweet hat, though.
@get2sammyb Still you could add the 4k stuff as a optional patch. 😉
@GravyThief The prices of a 4K HDR TV are not so much more expensive then a 1080P tv.
Skipping this game. The 1 complaint was not addressed. Physical, incomplete without patch. Maybe next year when it's 20$ 🤔
So....
How much is on the disc and how much do you HAVE to download to play?
If that's all 3 games and we don't have the option to only download and install 1 game at a time that's pretty stupid. And if it is all 3 games surely they could have reused the graphics, assrts, etc across all 3 games. They are nice looking games and all but I'm pretty sure GoW wasn't any bigger and that had several different looking worlds.
Not a dealbreaker, but another reason to wait to see if they shrink it down or split it up so you can only have 1 at a time installed.
This is looking more and more like I wished for a Spyro remake on a monkey's paw.
@rjejr Apparently the first game is on the disc, but only parts of 2 and 3 are also.
@Octane I see it that way too. I find especially western studios are guilty of too little optimization. You can tell by demo sizes. Everytime it's a Japanese game demo it's a nice small file size (except Yakuza 6 due to the nature of the game).
@GravyThief My HDTV just gave up on me last week and I have been looking into getting a replacement. It’s actually harder to buy a good size HDTV than UHDTV now. Looking at 40” and about 90% seem to be UHD. I was hoping for an HD bargain but am basically being forced to get UHD. Granted it will be low end but UHD nonetheless.
No thank you. Will skip on this one.
They should do the Bethesda idea for games like Skyrim and Fallout on steam, the game size is normal 25+ GB but the HD or 4K texture pack is a free download of you want true textures
So the disc only has 31GB on it?
Then they should have waited till the game was finished and put the whole thing on the disc.
I said it before I say it again 4K is good but more damaging than beneficial right now and highly overrated, the difference it's not that great and they haven't even master HD at a good fps, I'm glad some people started to notice now
This is rediculous. I’m not happy that Sony and MS allow this crap to happen.
4k is nice but you need really want HDR instead, dont plan on picking up boy spyro up until next year on sale tho, gimme Subnautica NOW!
@Orpheus79V I read that, but I was wondering, since everything needs to be installed now, can you just play game 1 or does the installation make you download and install game 2 and 3 first before playing game 1.
@kyleforrester87 u think they would learn by now
Not sure why we're all blaming 4K, most of these games use the same assets across the base and Pro versions of the game. It's only natural that over the course of a generation they push asset quality higher for 1080p users too.
Games like Doom were this big before the Pro came out and The Witcher 3 was over 50gb not to mention any COD or Destiny. People seem to be ignoring that this is 3 games and not like Crash's narrow path stages but wide open ones.
It's strange given that 2 & 3 are downloads
thats a crazy size so its going be best looking 3d platformer ever. im just curious how they are going to add lootboxes to it lol
Luckily gaming had totally passed me by during the PS1 days (come on, those grapics back then were so awful in retrospect) so I've never played this game, know nothing about why people love it so much and, more importantly, have no intention of getting it (especially if it takes up that much room)!!
@JohnnyShoulder You forgot 'Hey, there's a new semi-high profile game coming out; let's publish at least 18 guides a day for the most basic of mechanics!'
@Jaz007 @YousefFromKuwait @Enuo @rjejr @RoyalGuard @GoodGame @JohnnyShoulder @FullbringIchigo @Kidfried @darkswabber I honestly didn't notice or care about the issue, beyond having to wait 40+ minutes to install the 20GB patch.
I'm happily playing Spyro now and reliving my childhood.
@KidBoruto "having to wait 40+ minutes to install the 20GB patch"
@rjejr I don't get the reference, mind explaining?
@KidBoruto "You're a better man than I Gunga Din" is a world famous quote, kind of like a meme before there were memes. You said you didn't have any problem buying a game on disc then waiting 40+ minutes for a 20GB day 1 patch to install. So I was saying you are a better man than I for taking that in stride b/c even just thinking about it drives me up a wall.
It's amazing what we as gamers put up with these days, that some people simply take in stride, that some of us look at like - WHY are we paying for this broken day 1 stuff that sometimes takes months or years to fix!?!?" This doens't seem broken - No Man's Sky, Fallout 76, AC games, they really dont' seem ready for release - but still, you pay $60 for a game on disc, you should get the game on the disc ready to play. Even just having to install something before playing it drives me mad, though at least most games only take a minute or 2 to start.
@rjejr Don't get me wrong, I am displeased that Activision couldn't be bothered to compress the game onto one disc or just simply split the game across two discs like RDR2 did.
However I'm not going to let that displeasure stop me from enjoying the game...just my way of doing.
@KidBoruto It's a good way of doing. I'm much more of a "Cut off my nose to spite my face" kind of guy. Sad but true.
How big of a download do you think there must be on this 2 fer 1 set?
https://gematsu.com/2018/10/spyro-reignited-trilogy-crash-bandicoot-n-sane-trilogy-bundle-launches-november-13
@rjejr 20 GB patch for Spyro plus however big the Crash Bandicoot patch was. (I don't remember alas)
@KidBoruto Sorry, I thought there was only 1 disc in 1 box, I dind't know the bundle was the 2 different game boxes and 2 discs taped together. Google helped.
@rjejr Ohh so that's why you were asking.
Yeah the Crash/Spyro collection is just one case with two discs.
@KidBoruto Yeah, may get it for my son for Christmas and I thought it was 1 disc for all 6 games and he'd be spending all morning downloading a lot of content - internet is always slow Christmas morning - but since there are 2 discs that's very different. Thanks for your help.
@rjejr No problemo hope your kids enjoy the games.
