With news that Sony’s big PlayStation 4 bundle for Black Friday 2018 is selling out this November, it seems that we can safely say the system is performing as strongly as ever five years into its lifespan. And the October 2018 NPD report for the United States is yet more evidence of that, as the console set a new sales record for the month, registering the highest October of any PlayStation platform since the PlayStation 2 in 2002.
The console was of course propelled by the success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 – the former of which having enough juice to outpace the latter, despite it being a close-run race. In reality, the industry surged 73 per cent year-over-year, netting an eye-watering $1.545 billion in dollar sales. All categories were up, with software securing a particularly impressive 104 per cent increase compared to 2017.
It wasn’t just the tentpole releases that put in eye-bulging performances, though: SoulCalibur VI cut through the noise to sixth place – a very impressive result considering the company it’s been forced to keep. Marvel’s Spider-Man is also doing the business, leapfrogging God of War to become the fourth best-selling game of the year so far. One can only assume that its position will rise with the addition of the abovementioned Black Friday bundles.
Frankly, it’s another wildly impressive month for the PS4 as a whole, and yet more proof that there’s life in the old dog yet. It’s going to be interesting to see just how high it can go this year, and one point worth iterating is that Sony’s success is not having a detrimental effect on the other manufacturers – in fact, the story of 2018 continues to be that all three major platform holders are enjoying extraordinary years in the United States.

To nobody's surprise Call of Duty has killed in sales again, everywhere, even without a singleplayer campaign. As somebody who has actually enjoyed the campaign in the vast majority of CoD games this does make me a little concerned we may not ever see them come back, but I get that this has been and always will be an online multiplayer first series and people seem to really be enjoying this one, good for the dev team.
The numbers are staggering. The most PS4s sold in October this generation, and the most revenue in October for console sales since October 2014. The PS4 will be remembered as one of those special generations.
Man, it's almost as if all of those people boycotting the system over the censored anime kiddie touching games counted for nothing.
So, are fans still thinking that PlayStation is losing momentum (https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2018/11/soapbox_fans_think_playstations_losing_momentum_and_sonys_to_blame)?
Nothing stop this train
So....

@HungryWolf hahahaha. Excellent point.
@DLB3 'This must be what getting old feels like.'
It is indeed, my friend. Just think of it this way: you're also much more knowledgeable than you were back in 2002.
All these greys creeping in have to count for something, right?

📃 List over the game that released that month
@johncalmc to be fair you have your CoDs and your Red Dead 2s... if this was a month where NOTHING noteworthy came out for PS4 and it still was the top seller then yeah.
Something tells me November will be a pretty strong month for PS4 as well. Call it a gut feeling.
@johncalmc good point. they do count for nothing in the grand scheme of things and shouldn't be taken seriously
Sony must be very happy with these numbers. Nintendo must be happy with the japanese hardwares sales this week due to pokemon.
I am happy the we have a strong video game market. Good for the future.
Sony just keep on rolling with exclusives and key 3rd party partnerships. Their strategy has been brilliant! They seem to be completely unaffected by the loss of personnel in top positions within the company like Andrew House and Adam Boyes.
@JJ2 @HungryWolf The thing is that article wasn't about slowing sales at all, it was more about how they've pumped the brakes on community communication. Which is true.
@get2sammyb True, but when you use a term like "losing momentum" it makes you think about company performance (more about sales, than social-media presence). Your subtitle "Sammy's fed up with Sony shutting us out" was probably a better title.
@get2sammyb
Idk. If you use the word momentum, everyone understand it either as sales, games releases, popularity. Not on slowing down communication. You might argue Sony may lose some popularity from 'some' but PlayStation is as popular as ever.
Edit.
Meant to say your statement clearly entailed that PlayStation was impacted by Sony miscommunication which is indeed wrong when looking at the data.
@johncalmc
You mean the two people who said they're boycotting the system? I don't get how the pro censorship crowd misses the point. Most of us against it haven't said 'don't buy PlayStation,' because every company does some dumb sh*t that we shouldn't buy their systems for.
@Wesker
The PS4 is a well established system by this point, it's easy sailing for the new people right now. The PS5 generation will be the real test. Sony's never sold under 80 mil home consoles so I'd imagine things will keep rolling along, but you never know. Maybe I'm missing something and Phil Spencer and co. at MS are actually onto something and can knock Sony off the perch with the 'Xbox Scarlet.' Of course if I'm a betting man, that's not who I'm putting my money on but the gaming industry is funny and crazy things do happen.
@JJ2 @HungryWolf Touche! I guess I just meant it just feels like they're not driving things as hard as they were at the beginning of the gen, but I agree that it could have been worded better.
@JoeBlogs
I'm not sure. I've seen things from Sony right now that I don't like, and the people at MS have said things about singleplayer games that I don't like and also made moves more towards services that I'm not keen on. Next gen is going to be interesting. Based on, still very early signs, it's not clear if I'm going with PS5, whatever the next Xbox is called or if I'll just buy the the souped up revised Switch that we know is on the way and have that compliment my first ever gaming PC.
But as far as the here and now, Sony got it all right. MS made some huge mistakes which led to a lot of steps back but hopefully that will lead to a stronger Xbox in the future.
@Gamer83 Shouldn’t Xbox be making gains on Sony during this time? They have the more powerful console, proven reliability, consumer friendly subscription services that allow access to AAA games... 🤷🏻♂️
@Gamer83
He's not missing the point. It's just that his joke is flying over your head while of course stating his views through deriding. https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OGC.9de1148e0144e5c29fe483b8b8043a16&pid=Api&rurl=https%3a%2f%2fmedia.giphy.com%2fmedia%2f14oCNPvrcsEUww%2fgiphy.gif&ehk=rM9ZbsQIeJewTjJlknZUqw
@Wesker
MS screwed up too much at the start of this gen to recover and right now the exclusive battle isn't even close. It may have more powerful hardware which is great for the multiplats but those games can be played just fine on PS4 Pro. Then there's the problem that I don't know how MS will solve. It's been around for 3 gens and the only markets that care about it are North America and the UK. Even Nintendo is more of a global brand.
@johncalmc always take the "i wont be buying this game or console because reasons" with a grain of salt.
lot's of those people never mean it. and those who do never liked playstation to begin with.
just the other day i read a coment on a dualshokkers article about the sencorship of a game and that guy said that sony is selling more and more people towards pc and another said that sony should go bankrupt.
i have feeling that 1 guy was already a pc gamer and the other an xbox fan.
@jdv95
What a shame G Nelva didn't come to PushSquare.
Edit. Yea I would hope most people realise its actually trolling.
@Gamer83 don't bother, fanboys are dumb.
Dang, that thumbnail opened a wound in my heart. Miss u, Kaz. 'Riiidge Raaaceeerrr!'
I miss GOD KAZ
I want to say quality sells but then i see them number 1 spot. 🤢🤢🤮
PS4 is all about Games, games and more games... so not surprised
@Wesker
I didn't want to... And really don't want to go into idiotic fanboy wars but... What do you even mean with... 'proven reliability,'
Haha
@JJ2 I think the fail rate on the Xbox 360 was a real turn off for a lot of people. Xbones don’t seem to have that problem.
@Wesker
I can understand it was a turn off. The only time in my life I actually really want to buy an Xbox, an good friend of mine told me, 'don't bother, they burn'. I said. 'what do you mean they burn' etc haha
That doesn't mean a reliable machine can be a turn on though haha. It's just expected. Mind you, my OG PS4 has Been on for hours every day since early 2014. It's taken hits, nasty dust, you name it,and I dont even clean it. It's never let me down and quiet as a gost when not launching a game from disc.
