So Blizzcon 2018 is underway, and during the event's opening ceremony, Blizzard revealed what's next for the Diablo franchise. After months and months of rumours, speculation, and a bit of expectation dampening from Blizzard itself, Diablo Immortal was officially announced.
Diablo Immortal is a brand new Diablo game that takes place between Diablo II and Diablo III. It's an action role-playing title complete with multiple character classes, powerful abilities, and loot, but it's safe to say that the reveal has not gone down well. Why? Because it's a mobile game, of course.
At the time of writing, the official gameplay trailer, which we've embedded above, is sitting at 45,000 views. It has 400 likes and almost 10,000 dislikes. The cinematic trailer is doing just as poorly, with 90,000 views, 800 likes, and a whopping 22,000 dislikes.
Now, we're sure that Diablo IV is coming at some point. Blizzard has hinted at this several times, but concluding your big opening ceremony with a Diablo mobile game seems like a misstep to us. Well, either that, or some absolutely top notch trolling.

It was worth watching the opening ceremony for the Twitch chat's reaction to this announcement alone. I've never seen so many NOOOOOOOOOs in my life.
These companies should know by now that mobile spinoffs are going to get a rocky reception unless they're announced alongside a proper sequel, ala Fallout 4/Fallout Shelter.
sheesh that dislike bar lol...
and then there are still some devs that believe that mobile is the next evolution/generation of gaming.....
Let's not forget that the official company name is Activision Blizzard so of course it was a mobile game. Even CoD and Destiny got mentions this year.
Sadly still no Hearthstone on consoles again. You'd think after Gwent they would have done it at this point.
Overwatch stuff was nice but no much for us console gamers though.
It looks...fine? Like Diablo on a phone? I don't get the anger.
I randomly went on Twitter just as this was being announced and it was the best thing I did all day.
Oh dear. It sounds almost as bad as the amount of time Bethesda spent on Elder Scrolls Legends and mobile.
groan a big cash grab money grabbing smelly fest
sometimes i wonder how devs that make such a bad decision feel when making the game.
like they must know that it will not be received well and that sales may suffer.
sure there is some audience for mobile gaming, but still,is all the possible backlash worth it to the point that they still decide to make it mobile exclusive?
Insert snarky "but is it coming to Switch?" comment here
@jdv95 agreed. the backlash taints the reputation of the publisher. that is not an easy thing to overcome so why put yourself in such a bad position? now, had blizzard announced a true diablo sequel and then on top of that added that they also have a supplemental game for mobile, people would easily let it slide since they are already being treated to what was expected. this is quite an insult to the fans in my opinion as this new game is not aimed at them... it is like blizzard is saying thanks for the loyalty, but we are not making the diablo sequel for you. bye! yea... they deserve this backlash.
Wow seems that they deleted comments in the youtube section... Never played Diablo but I get the annoyance.
There’s really only one beautiful word that can describe this tragedy: Oof.
Wow. This is really a kick in the tender regions. I love diablo. Im okay with a remaster.... but a mobile game? Yeah... im disappointed. Its like Sony announcing a new syphon filter, for mobile.
Stop with microtransactions. Stop with mobile games. This is why we dwell in nostalgia.
Wow, I've been waiting years for this. I LOVE Diablo and this- this is an insult. It wouldn't have been so insulting if they didn't call this years Blizzcon "THE YEAR OF DIABLO" I hope Blizzard burns in the dephs of- well you get it.
Finished my Season 15 run a few hours ago and was eager to hear about the future of Diablo. Now I feel sorry to having my hopes high, what a disappointment...
Someone miscalculated big-time...
This is not the kind of game you hype to the hardcore at BlizCon.
This trailer should have been quietly released before the show and then downplayed.
This 'big Diablo reveal' was a huge flop and has now damaged the franchise.
Sad day for Diablo fans.
A mobile game makes sense to me, since mobile gamers outnumber "stationary gamers". It's a way for Blizzard to expand into the huge and growing mobiles markets, as well as existing markets that were not so big for them before. Even if they loose a few of their older fans, they stand to gain considerably more (potentially).
For me this is a sign that Diablo IV will most-likely also be released on mobiles, not just the typical platforms. In other words, I think this is also a way of pre-marketing Diablo IV on mobiles, testing out the market and their mobiles game engine.
I agree though, that this is probably the wrong crowd to make this announcement for. One the other hand, each and everyone of these fans surely has a mobile phone. It's not as if the game will be expensive and difficult to get, unlike a PS4, XBox or Switch exclusive title.
I also don't like the stigma that is being placed on mobile gamers, it is obnoxious. It's the same vile and condescending talk the PC Master-race people use against console gamers.
Also, this is just one diablo game, it's not even Diablo IV.
@turntSNACO because it will most likely be like other mobile games, free to play and full of micro transactions and random unlocks
that's not to say free to play mobile games can't be fun just look at Dissidia Opera Omnia but most of them are really aggressive and anti consumer
just look at the MT's BF2 had and think 10x's worse
Its bringing Diablo to a wider audience which is a good thing. Mobile market is much bigger than PC and console so this makes the most sense.
Why did they announced it on blizzcon? Like, why? The fan isn't going to blizzcon to see a frigging mobile games, just announced it on youtube and be done with it.
In the other hand, I can't wait for warcraft 3 reforge, I think it's my number 1 most anticipated 2019 games
@GamerDad66 Yeah this, don't make it like a huge things, just announce "we're gonna make a new mobile diablo games" and hurriedly move on to other games. I don't think it damaged the franchise though, if blizzard announce diablo 1 or 2 remaster or diablo 4 sometimes in the future I'm sure it will be a huge news.
I don't think it fits the mobile phone very well but I'm sure it will get its own fan base.
Heh, they keep removing and re-posting the videos
lol Blizzard is on PushSquare disliking comments...
They shouldn't have announced this at Blizzcon. People had paid to be there, it's their hardcore fanbase, they don't play on mobile. They also glibly retorted to their paying audience, "What you guys don't have phones?"
Hahahaha! Wow! What absolute heroes! Way to miss the point! Way to be so out of touch with your audience that you dig yourself deeper and deeper into a pit! Well done. Really well done!
I'm still going to give it a try. I like playing on mobile sometimes, but I'm not a hardcore Blizzard fan either, and for good reason!...
Wonder if we'll get a Vita port? No? Oh well...
