Sir Dan is back on the PlayStation 4 in MediEvil, and as promised earlier in the month, this is no mere remaster. Instead being remade from the “grave up” by Other Ocean Interactive, here’s your first look at how the Hero of Gallowmere has made the transition to new-gen hardware. To be honest, this footage is looking rough compared to other PSone revivals like Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, but we’re sure there’s plenty of spit and polish to be applied to Fortesque’s crumbling bones yet.
“Whether you picked up the original or never heard of the original, we know you’ll love the sword swinging, perilous puzzles, and enchanting environments,” wrote Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden on the PlayStation Blog. “We’ll exhume more information about MediEvil in the upcoming months, so stay tuned.”
The title's due out in 2019, so something to look forward to next year.

It looks okay, but it's not up to the same standard as the Crash or Spyro remakes. (Not yet anyway).
Having said that, considering we were all expecting a PSP port, it's still a pleasant surprise that this exists at all.
Really thought I would be playing this in 2018 but oh well , 2019 is completely stacked for PS exclusives !
@get2sammyb They've always said 'remake', when was anyone expecting a PSP port?
It looked a bit choppy in that footage, but plenty of time to reanimate the finer details.
@Octane Given they said "Remaster" for Parappa and what we got was a PSP emulation....
Looks amazing. Glad Sony went from "remastering it" to "remaking it". Great choice.
Crash and Spyro look better in trailers closer to release than they did at their initial trailers, so I betcha Medievil will look better over time.
Wow. This looks better than I imagined!
looks good to me
Looks like it’s still some way off, but I’m looking forward to it!
@Octane Hmmm, I definitely thought it was going to be like the PaRappa and Patapon ports, where they basically take the PSP game code and add in new assets. Which is fine, but I prefer a full remake.
@Deadlyblack Yeah of course, seems like they've got the basics down so I'm sure there's lots of optimisation to come.
@get2sammyb @Knuckles-Fajita Well, I definitely recall them saying ''remade'' for PS4, but I could be wrong. So I assumed it was going to be more like this than a straight up port. Anyway, it looks fine as far as remakes go. Not mind blowing, but not bad either.
Maybe should have held off on showing this until after Spyro was in the rear view mirror. It obviously looks much better than the original PS1 game, but it looks like a remaster on the Dreamcast more than a remake they are promoting with that huge 4K on the screen. Nobody paid $400 for a Pro for graphics that look like that. Stop using 4k to promote stuff when it would look just fine on the PS3.
And overall, while I recall liking this game when back when, now it looks like a 2nd grader tried to make his own version of DmC in Scratch. $40 was ok for Crash and Spyro trilogies, this one game should be $19.99 tops.
It looks ok, I guess. I was expecting a higher polygon-count for the main character model; Sir Dan's vertebrae look like bone-textured nuts, and other details look kinda PS3-era to me. I'm sure it will look and play just fine when it comes out though.
Having never played the original I have to say this looks quite enticing. Makes me think of the Maximo games on the PS2, remember those? I'd happily spend a few quid for a remaster or even a lazy port for those two, but it seems Capcom has forgotten all about them.
The fact that I can visibly see how much tighter the controls are is a testament to how nice this remake is. And to how many time I've played Medievil.
I’m excited it looks like it could be fun. One of those who never played Medievil before!
Looking good, just need smooth 60 fps and it will be perfect
I'm pretty thrilled by how it looks personally.
Looks great to me, really can't wait to play this again. Come on Capcom join the party and give us Maximo
I think smooth gameplay is more important for a remake like this than polygon count. So, as long as gameplay is fine, I'm ok with whatever. I'm stoked.
Love it, can't wait for more info!
This is really underwhelming when compared to a lot of the really stunning remakes we've seen lately.
It does look lower res compared to stuff N.Sane Trilogy, but I'll still get it. Been wanting to play it for ages.
looks awesome.cant wait.easily top 7 ps4 game ever.word up son
@carlos82 maximizing was dark souls before it.im still playing maximo on my ps3.worf up son
next give me parasites Eve.word up son
looks like the maximo games but less challenging and more button mashy... decent effort, but probably not for me.
Looks cool. I love that there's a place for remakes like this on the PS4. I'm in.
I agree it does look a bit rough, won't stop me from revisiting my childhood though! If it is all on the disc that is 😉
People are comparing the graphics to the Crash and Spyro remakes which is a bit unfair considering the devs for those have worked extensively with those characters in the past and have a engine that they could get those artstyles up and running. Whereas this is the first time Other Ocean have made a game like this since there usually a port house.
@AdamNovice I always like to compare it with a crappy child's drawing, just because he doesn't have any experience with drawing, doesn't make drawing any less crappy. In that case you have to wonder if they were the right studio. And Crash and Spyro were 3 games for $40, will this game be a tenner to compensate for that? Probably not.
I mean, I don't think it looks that bad (I'm not a fan of the way Crash looks in the remake either); but I don't think that having little or no experience is a good excuse when you're making a product with the intention to sell it. It looks... alright, but it certainly isn't a Shadow of the Colossus remake.
@Octane But Shadow of the Colossus was made by Bluepoint who are the best at this kind of thing so the comparison is unfair again. As for price it'll probably be around £25 which is reasonable considering Medievil was always a much more ambitious game then Crash was due to full 3D, varied environments, plenty of cutscenes, weapons etc so there's far more that needs doing.
A point I forgot to make in my previous post was that the Crash and Spyro games have a lot of colour in them which makes the visuals in the remakes really pop whereas Medievil has a dark gothic look which doesn't stand out as well.
I'm concerned this won't hold up as far as gameplay is concerned when I don't have nostalgia for the original.
As long as they don't over inflate the price to try and cash in on the (admittedly limited) nostalgia, then I think this will be fine. Looks a lot nicer than I expected.
I never played this game and to be honest to be honest this is doing nothing for me.Shame,I was quite interested to see what it was all about.
It looks pretty good, I’m really happy that I will finally play Medievil.
Looks lovely to me, maybe not as polished as Crash/Spyro but there's still time for improvements, even if this is the final build, the original was so much fun i don't think it matters too much, i'm looking forward to it all the same
I second the comments about the PS2 Maximo games being given a new lease of life, those games were fantastic !
@AdamNovice I don't get the complaints, I've just watched the 4K trailer on my TV and it looks great, there are some areas which are clearly more polished than others but overall very good so far.
@playstation1995 I might have to dig out my PS3 for some Maximo for Halloween assuming I can stop playing God of War for 5 minutes 😁
Awesome. Looks great. Sony killing it again.
Looks great. I hope it's has 4K and HDR support.
@PS_Nation medievil is easily the top 7 ps1 games I ever play.word up son
No one can ever be happy that it’s getting old. Everyone was just expecting a straight remaster instead they are remaking it from the ground up and this early look shows real Promise it already looks tons better than the original and pretty good imo
@Azikira I don’t think the nostalgia is all that limited Sony isn’t doing this specific game out of the blue they held a poll of what games fans would like to see remade and this game came out on top it’s always been a PlayStation classic to fans
@1_W1NG3D_4NG3L Remake of Legend of Dragoon. 😁
@playstation1995 really hard for me to agree with top 7
This is how i like my Backwards compatibility 100%. I cant tolerate old blocky graphics more then 15 min. Nostalgia fits me better looking a game up on YouTube and watching a short video of game play. I even still have every past PlayStation and games packed away.
@rjejr Dude, it’s not even finished yet. The graphics are obviously going to look way better in the final version.
I've never played any of the Medievil games before, but my friends keep raving and recommending the originals to me.
So I'll definitely be checking out this game down the line when it's $20-$25 New or cheaper.
@JesWood13 "The graphics are obviously going to look way better in the final version."
B/c no game has ever looked worse than the trailer, right dude?
Looks Spyro'ish I did play the Demo back in the PS1 days but never bought it. Might get it considering people say it's a good game. Hopefully more PS1(and PS2) games can be re-done like this and then I might stop moaning about PS1/2/3 Disc BC for future PlayStation
The water flows, the grass moves, the music plays... I doubt they can squeeze everything in a single blue-ray disc!
@dark_knightmare2 I kinda worded it wrong, it was more of a personal application to myself, but I still hope they won't charge more than $30 for remastering just a single game in the series. I do know that PS Fans love Sir Dan (he WAS in PSASBR, and not even Crash or Spyro were in that, but of course due to licensing), but I didn't really have much of a connection with him, even though we share a name. Only had that one Demo Disc that had like 7 playable games on it, never owned the full PS1 game.
Either way, I hope it's priced fairly for what it is~
