We've known for a long time that the latest God of War nearly used Egyptian mythology as a backdrop rather than Norse. According to the game's director, Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studio was split down the middle for the setting, and it was his tie-breaking decision that ultimately led to the frosty, foreboding world of the Norse gods we know and love.
However, a new piece of concept art was shown during a talk at Devcom, depicting an early version of Kratos and his son facing off against Egyptian baddies big and small. The photo isn't the best, but you get the idea:
Microphone stand aside, it's a cool image, and shows just how close the game came to this alternate setting.
What do you think of this concept art? Would you have preferred an Egyptian setting, or do you think Barlog made the right call? Walk like an Egyptian in the comments below.

maybe they could use it for a future game instead because Egyptian Mythology would be awesome to cover
Im playing through atm and loving the norse mythology. I dont know how the game ends and whether there is scope for another norse game, but makes sense to consider egyptian or mayan settings for future titles i would have thought.
That could also have turned out great. I'm sure if they still have passion for the series in many years from now, they could move to Egyptian mythology.
I still think they should help another studio do it now, with a different protagonist, of course.
I can see them turning to Egyptian mythology eventually, though I'm sure we'll see another game or two focusing on Norse.
@Rob_230 The ending was satisfying, but definitely leaves it open to several sequels. It also blew my mind. Can't wait for you to finish
god of egypt.they will definitely be a god of war in Egypt mythology.word up son
I'm not sure if it's a spoiler, but it looks like that Kratos will visit realms with different mythologies, right?
This concept is amazing too, hope they use it too.
well cory did say that they where open to the idea of visiting egyptian and even mayan mythology at some point.
so i think that we could see 1 of those settings after the next GOW.
I hope this will be on another god of war trilogy titles, the second and third / final titles in norse, the fourth / beginning of new trilogy on egypt
There’s a nice sub-plot in the new GOW which tells how (SPOILER) visited other realms and Gods so that kinda leaves the door open for Kratos to use the same methods to visit other lands, realms and pantheons. Would be a good way to explain why the old gods aren’t really heard from anymore too. Kratos killed all of them. 😉
@PS_Nation Based on this image, or based on the game?
@Octane They mention other mythologies in the new game.
@PS_Nation I see... I don't think it works like visiting the other realms as he does in the new game. I mean, how did he get to Midgard in the first place? By foot? Midgard is a flat disc with a defined border, like it is in the mythology. Is Midgard part of the same planet as Greece from the other GOW games? Same ''dimension''? Are the nine realms of the world tree similar to other mythologies, or are they a different kind of ''dimension''? The entire continuation between the games is already strange enough as it is.
Anyway, I think that was just a reference at most. Don't read too much into that Easter egg. The new trilogy(?) will definitely focus on Norse mythology, I don't think he will be ''hopping'' between other mythologies. That would be a shame IMO, since there's so much left to explore in Norse mythology alone.
I hope we get 1 more Norse (obvi we have too) but maybe give us a solid closer (or something they can come back to eventually) so we can jump to another mythology b/c Egyptian would 100% be my next pick
