We're cautiously optimistic about Team Sonic Racing. Early gameplay footage has looked bright, cheerful, and fun, and with Sumo Digital at the helm, it's in safe hands. We're still unsure, however, on whether it'll measure up to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, a wonderful kart racer with lots of variety thanks to its inclusion of a wide range of SEGA properties.
Coming from Gamescom is the above new footage from IGN, and it's still looking pretty solid. The cooperative mechanics are all good ideas, and while the track itself looks pretty static, the game as a whole has a fittingly colourful visual style. We also learn that the full game will feature 21 tracks that take inspiration from seven locations from various Sonic titles, and that outside of the story mode, you can mix and match teams as much as you want.
Also, it's worth noting that regular single player races will be in the game. This detail came from a Famitsu preview a while back. For those turned off by the team racing angle, this should come as good news.
Anyway, what do you think of this new Team Sonic Racing gameplay? Have you gotta go fast when this launches later in the year? Follow the trail of rings down to the comments below.

I'm sure that gameplay-wise it'll be fine, but it just seems so bland compared to Transformed and that's my big issue with it. The tracks don't look like 'Sonic' levels to me, they just look like generic locations from any kart game. Transformed was packed with nostalgia and the levels all looked like amazing, updated versions of classic levels, which also had better variety thanks to the transforming vehicle mechanic.
Looking solid. That track is hardly worth showing off though.
Even though they've ditched the transformations and All Stars, I do hope that the tracks are little more inspired...
It's hard to shake the feeling that Sumo Digital want to make an awesome racer (like Transformed) but are being told by Sega "you have to do it this way" (i.e. Sonic characters only, team-based gameplay that no-one asked for)
@Quintumply There was a ''Need fur speed'' joke hidden in the subtitle you missed out on!
The game looks quite generic. I'll stick with MK8 for kart racing I think!
I just don't like modern Sonic character models. They're so... plastic.
Racing looks fine, though maybe a bit too slow here.
@Octane Very good!
@Incognito_D I can't imagine Sumo not wanting to make something that isn't an improvement on what they've done before.
It does seem like Sega are really holding the reigns. Punishment for everyone loving Mania more than Forces!
For me, it's not a problem that the new Sonic racer is slower than Transformed, if it improves the tension in the race - especially on split screen. The tracks seem kind a dull though. And... will there still be a non teammate race mode?
@Bartig
Regarding speed, the lower levels of S&SASR and S&ASRT were pretty slow.
Non team modes are confirmed already and up top.
I think it looks good, it just doesn't look as good as Transformed. And that's a shame because I'd be there day one for a proper sequel to Transformed.
I feel like elements such as "form your own team" and "regular single races" should've been headlines sooner than this; might've cleared up some of the confusion and / or hesitation. Having them confirmed has made me 100% more excited for this now.
All we need is a release date. Late September's looking pretty clear, or early October.
It doesn't look as good as transformed and really I preferred the original sonic and Sega all stars racing racing game to transformed so this is barely on my radar
