Sonic Mania might update the old Sonic formula for a modern audience, but it's also a giant throwback to the Mega Drive days. Back in the 90s, it was common for games to be rife with cheat codes, an almost extinct way to change up the game by enabling things like infinite lives, or spawning in items you shouldn't have access to. As it happens, some cheats have been unearthed in SEGA's well-received platformer.
To enter them, you'll first need to get into the secret Level Select screen. Go to Mania Mode, and enable Debug mode. Then go to the No Save option, hold Square, and press X. Once you're on the Level Select screen, go down to the sound test to input the following codes.
- 3 3 3 1 9 7 9 0 8 1 1 – Changes all animals into Squirrels
- 4 1 2 6 – All Emeralds
- 1 9 9 2 1 1 2 4 – Infinite Continues
- 2 0 1 8 0 6 2 3 – Force Encore Mode
- 1 9 8 9 0 5 0 1 – Unknown
- 2 0 1 7 0 8 1 5 – Super Sonic Flight in normal levels (Don’t need to be Super to trigger it)
- 9 0 0 1 – Max Control For Sonic (Drop Dash, Super Peel Out, Insta-Shield)
- 0 0 0 0 6 2 1 4 – Disable Super Music
If you've entered the code correctly, you'll hear a chime. Currently, it seems these cheats only work on the No Save option, so you won't be doing any harm by fooling around with these. Do you miss the days of cheat codes? Reminisce in the comments below.

do they disable trophies though because if they don't using them would make the trophies pretty much usless
Ooh nice, will have to give these a try eventually!
@FullbringIchigo Trophies are pretty much useless anyway.
@Knuckles-Fajita yeah that's true but you know what i mean, you shouldn't get them if your using cheats
@FullbringIchigo yeah i remember thinking as a kid playing Sonic on my Mega Drive "mannn, this game needs trophy support".
@Knuckles-Fajita @kyleforrester87

@kyleforrester87 Man, this game needs something that shows me I did well. A completion notice of sorts. Proof that I did it. If only games did something like that, that meant trophies weren't needed...
The no super music one could be nice. I often find myself ignoring the opportunity to go super because I want to keep listening to the music.
Good ol cheat codes.
If EA did this, they would charge $.99 for each cheat and they would have limited use.
@RogerRoger Don't mess with the Squirrels
@RogerRoger Useless? I bet ya deviantart is going to have a field day with that one
You could enter debug mode by holding two buttons down on the title screen, but I think Sega did away with that during the latest patch. So now ya gotta get 16 silver medals doing the Blue Sphere bonus stage to unlock it. I pretty much ignored those bonus stages but now it looks like I’m gonna put a little more effort into them.
You mean I've been pressing up, down left, right, X, O and start on the title screen for nothing?
I remember when I use cheat codes on GTA San Andreas to make the game more fun and fly with my car anywhere good all days now those features are call DLC and abuse by every single company, maybe just because of this I'll buy this game sooner rather than later I love details like this
@RogerRoger he uses the animals as batteries... you uncultured swine!
it was THAT bad lol also as far as badass squirrels go there's always shortfuse the cybernik, a legit cyborg squirrel and connon to the sonic universe
