Here’s a bit of a surprise news snippet: Ratchet & Clank’s likeable PlayStation 4 remake is actually Insomniac’s most successful game. Community director James Stevenson revealed the tidbit in a response on the ResetEra message boards, and while he wasn’t explicit about which metric of "success" he was referring to, he certainly implied that it's the studio’s best-selling game.
We know that, at launch, it was the fastest-selling Ratchet & Clank to date. It was also given away on PlayStation Plus earlier this year, so is sure to have racked up a fair few units that way. But this is still quite surprising to us; the title was obviously very well made, but it was deployed as a kind of budget release without a massive marketing campaign behind it. Well, assuming you overlook the movie like everyone else.
Of course, it’s all but guaranteed that Spider-Man will overtake Ratchet & Clank when all’s said and done. The question is: how many months will it take for Peter Parker to leapfrog all of the Burbank-based developer’s previous efforts? We’re going to say six maximum.
Now given you had two studios working on that game, and it seems only one is on Spider-Man....
looks at Ratchet and Clank: Locked and Loaded
In your own time lads. I'll wait. I do want more than a single R&C game on this box mind. I mean this is why I bought a PS4 so if you want to guarantee a PS5 sale I supppppoooosssseeeeeee…..
Best series ever! I really hope that Insomniac makes another Ratchet & Clank after Spider-Man.
Yeah I'd like another Ratchet, too. I have to imagine they're virtually all working on Spider-Man right now, though. I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case.
@PS_Nation nice. i love ratchet and clank especially ratchet and clank tools of destruction for the ps3.word up son
R&C was my personal GOTY for 2016 , I loved uncharted 4 but idk just prefered R&C a bit more . They gotta be in planning stages or already working on something for PS5 at this point .
Too bad it's one of the worst in the series. Pretty though, good on them
I liked the remake. Hopefully we'll get more Ratchet in the future.
I remember getting annoyed at sony for announcing it a couple of day before e3 at ps blog, why didn't sony announced it on e3 stage.
I hope sony remade all r&c main games for ps4
Was it a budget release? I thought it was £30-£35? Glad to see it in the headlines again, as much as people liked it on launch, kinda feel it's sunk into a bit of an unappreciated gem amongst all the heavy hitters since! Genuinely one of the best looking games ever made
I forgot i had this game in my backlog i should crack on it before the fall rush
This will probably change in a few months though.
@SnackBox lol no just no
I know it's a longshot but after seeing how easily MS snatched up some studios, I wouldn't mind seeing Sony put a ring on it with Insomniac. It's been a partnership that has worked out beautifully over the years for both companies.
I'd love to see another full-fledged brand new R&C game myself, but at this point in the gen, kind of wouldn't mind if Sony and Insomniac wait until PS5.
I actually preferred it over Uncharted 4 also (surprising since in 2007 and 2009 I would've gone with the Uncharted games over R&C in my GOTY selections). I usually playthrough games 2, sometimes 3 times, but I liked this remake so much I went through it 5 times, and will probably do so again some day. Really fun game.
@Gamer83 Whatever it's on, I'll buy it.
@dark_knightmare2 Don't get me wrong it's still fun but with the soundtrack being forgettable and nothing close to original catchy tunes, the character's development with the back and forth dialogue cut-scenes that have no personality compared to the original and the pacing of the story along with R&C interacting with each planet they encounter makes it really weak in my opinion. If you've got time 'TheGamingBritShow' explains it better than I do.
their best selling ratchet game sold around 3m maybe the remake sold 4m I guess
Well, this bodes well for more remakes or perhaps a new installment in the series. Unless Spider-Man kills it and we get a Spidey series instead.
Same. After being a little disappointed with the PS3 R&C games (mainly Into the Nexus), I was convinced with R&C PS4 that Insomniac still knows what makes the series tick.
I bought R&C PS4 shortly after its launch, and man it was a fun ride! It's one of the very few games I'd ever be willing to take a BD$130.00 plunge on (yes, that's what it cost at launch in Barbados, and that's considered a budget title). I really hope they make another one before this generation is over.
Spyro Reignited should beat R&C, and Spiderman, those games were so good.
And before anybody says - that doesn't count, it's a remake - so was R&C.
......... until Spider-Man
Yeah, Ratchet & Clank is fantastic, but it’s surprising to hear it’s Insomniac’s biggest success ever. As the article says though, Spidey will no doubt smash that record.
I never got into it but my friend is a big fan of this series. Hoping I will love their Spiderman game as much he loves R&C.
Give me R&C Gladiator anyday and keep in the comedy of the that alien news reporter trying it on with that robot "what da ya say Whaaaaaaaanita"
@playstation1995 Was that the one with Courtney Gears? Because that was my favorite game. 😁
Bought this for the kids and ended up platinuming it myself, great game. The kids still play it, too.
Played it on Plus and loved it. Great little game, looked great, played great.
Its perhaps not that big a surprise. R&C has a mass appeal - not just to young but old as well. Nostalgia also helps and even if the movie wasn't that successful, its still marketing the game and the name.
Personally, I prefer Sunset Overdrive of the games they have released this gen so far which was greatly overlooked, but for me Resistance is their greatest creation to date. I do expect Spidey to overtake R&C in sales and go onto to be their most successful title. Its looking quite a fun game too with little/no competition in what it offers - unlike Resistance which had CoD, Killzone, BF etc for example. R&C had little competition either - Knack and Yooka Laylee.
@Welkin96 It was basically the 'Original' with a few tweaks here and there. Bringing the modern weapons and upgrade path, tweaking the story slightly so its from a different perspective - like its a 'flashback', throw in a new level or two and you have R&C but its still basically the original!!
That game is really good, but I still much prefer the original PS2 game.
Doesn't surprise me. It was cheap, looks amazing, the gameplay is great and it appeals to a huge audience. Great to see it succeed.
Ratchet and Clank has always one of my most loved PlayStation games. But I kind of hope after Spiderman I will want a Spiderman 2 the most for the next game.
I forgot I have this in my library from Plus. Downloading later. Thanks for the reminder.
I just bought it last week. Looking forward to it.
Yep. It was good. I'll take another.
A remake of the first Sly Cooper game anyone?
That’s cool new though; I definitely wasn’t expecting it.
This is great news, hopefully Insomniac is already working on the next R&C game behind the scenes or plans to after they release Spider-Man and it's DLC.
I really enjoyed R&C 2016. The story may not have been as good aa the original, but the gameplay was top notch. It's up there with the 3rd game to me.
@Jaz007 I'd rather have a Sly 5 than a remake, because I still hate that cliff-hanger at the end of Thieves in Time.
Really hope we get a new R&C soon, i guess it's more likely to happen on PS5 now though
It kinda sucks that Sunset Overdrive is an exclusive and it didnt even sell well on the Xbox.
So... the lesson is.
Make another dang R&C game so I can give you my money...
