Paladins, the free-to-play hero shooter from Hi-Rez Studios, has recently been announced for Nintendo Switch, and with it has come the news that the game will support cross-play between various platforms. Unfortunately, PlayStation 4 is not among them, and players aren't best pleased.
The above Tweet from one of the game's developers has sparked fresh controversy about Sony's stance on cross-platform play. The publisher is unlikely to suddenly play ball, of course; with such a large install base, it doesn't make much sense that the company would want to share that out with its competitors. Still, people are riled up regardless, and once again, Sony's in the firing line.
Would you want to see cross-play with PS4 for Paladins? Fire some shots in the comments below.

More and more games do it.
I'm sure come PS5 they'd be dumb not too. That would be a point against their favour frankly. Right now, it doesn't matter. But who knows what the future holds.
Walmart.
I think most PS4 players would rather play Overwatch then it's poor F2P rip off let alone with Nintendo and Xbox players. Though I'm sure Phil Spencer will find a way to make a not so subtle dig.
This is really the only thing Sony/PS4 have done wrong this gen, there is absolutely no reason why they havent except for sheer stubborness.
It is Paladins! If it was Overwatch then I would care.
Ahhh So the game Is Dying thank God Used to play it when it was good and had some cool Ideas.
I tried this game on PC and it seems like a solid change of pace from Overwatch, if you like hero-type games (side note: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Heroes & Villains mode is my current fav of this genre and the best thing about said game's multiplayer IMHO).
@gmxs Apart from the obvious business decisions like allowing would give a leg up to their competition and what company in the world would want to do that?
@gmxs (well & Backwards Compatibility in a more accessible way as in not everyone has good enough internet to use PS Now).
@adf86 Phil Spencer is always worried about PS4 and cross-play, but he should be worried about the awful games that MS are releasing instead. Did you see that Crackdown 3 will be delayed again?
Sony has cross-play since PS3 and MS never wanted when Xbox was doing great. Funny how the media never called MS for this.
@adf86 you're absolutely right. But you know, I'd like to play Overwatch with my Xbox friends as well!
I think cross-play is nice for the community when multi-platform multiplayer games have a low player base (i.e. Raiders of the Broken Planet, Primal Carnage). Sucks when you boot up a game and the lobbies are all empty!
Meh I think Sony is fine... Besides w the PS4 versions of games 9 times out of 10 you’re playing with the majority not the minority.
Instead of improving their console, MS are trying to make Sony looks bad instead. Hint: It doesn't work, the PS4 is still beating the crap out of you and 90% of the people still don't care about crossplay.
@NintendoFan4Lyf It certainly makes them come off as the bad guy (and rightly so) but the reality is if you're a group of four friends with three PlayStations, they really don't want the fourth person buying an Xbox and still being able to play with pals. They want everyone on PS4.
It does reflect badly on Sony and I think it probably should, but I don't see them changing their stance either. And I just don't think there's enough controversy surrounding this to get them to change their mind.
At the end of the day, I just don't think people truly care about this. But we'll see what kind of reaction the inevitable Fortnite announcement brings.
@adf86 Nintendo and Xbox apparently.
on this type of game cross play with PC i dislike them, people will use K/M on PC and buy devices to enable K/M in the games, Overwatch PS4 has so much people with K/M on high tier players, you see people with 74%+ of accuracy, it's impossible on a controller havy this acc.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Reverse that situation for me. All my friends have Xbox/PC, and we want to play Rocket League together. I bought that on Switch, because that was easier than each of them buying a PS4. Same with other games.
This logic only works if your friend circle all have PS4s.
@Tulio517 That's absolutely fine mate, it's that others need to understand Sony's position in this as well.
@PS_Nation Yes I did mate, and while I would never mock a game for been delayed (Just cos it isn't on PlayStation) I admit it does give the game and brand a bad look.
@NintendoFan4Lyf "But what if that fourth friend really doesn’t like the PS4 controller, or wants to continue his Xbox 360 games via Backwards compatibility? What if he /she likes Game Pass or just plain loves Gears of War and Halo titles? What if nothing on PS4 interests that friend? He/she gets hosed out of joining the group because he/she has a different gaming preference?"
Sony doesn't care if you love Halo or prefer a different controller. Sony wants you to buy a PlayStation. A selling point of PS4 is its install base and the fact that most people own one. If you want to play with those people, you have to buy a PS4. You pretty much illustrated why they don't want to do this.
It's cold and it's corporate, but it's all about their bottom line.
@Amido I was going to write about this. The problem of cross-connection with all platforms is that it would bring more problems: M&K vs Controler, parity in FPS and cheaters in PC. This issues in competitive multiplayer would be a nightmare.
@NintendoFan4Lyf @get2sammyb It's cold and it's corporate, but it's all about their bottom line.
I don't think it's cold at all it's just business decisions if Nintendo was in the same position as Sony knowing how arrogant they are they will probably do the same
@get2sammyb Nice posts. Do you think they'll allow it next gen on PS5? Might be a nice selling point - buy a PS5, play all of your favorite cross platform games with your friends. If PS5 came out and you could only play all of these online games with other PS5 players it's going to limit the number of players for a year or two.
Of course then they'll have to explain why you can't do it on PS4. Like they may have a hard time explaining why no BC on PS5 w/ PS4 games if they decide not to have BC but have the same architecture. Next gen is Sony's to lose, going to be an interesting reveal one of these years.
For now I side w/ everybody - I see why people want it, and I see why Sony won't give it to them. Online is getting very popular, might be a bad idea to skip it next gen.
Non issue for me. I don’t want to play against other platforms because you can’t guarantee a level playing field. One platform limits these issues. Also if I was Sony I wouldn’t, it’s a key selling point having the largest install base.
@NintendoFan4Lyf
What reason do Xbox owners have to get a PS4 if they can play games with their friends on PlayStation without having to buy Sony's console. This hurts a selling point for the console. It's also funny how when MS was ahead last gen it wasn't so open to cross-platform and nobody gave a damn.
@GigaGaia
I don't think it's about wanting to make PlayStation look bad. MS definitely sees this industry as going more service based so wants to get in on everything, including PlayStation. I'm not so sure Sony has the same vision for where things are headed, at least for the foreseeable future, and so doesn't see this as a viable option right now. Things can change quickly though. I think, if things continue as they have, Sony does hurt a selling point for the inevitable PS5 by opening up to Xbox and Nintendo players so I get the corporate stance. It doesn't look good to the casual gamer, so have to find a way to weather that storm. That falls on the PR department.
@Gamer83 @NintendoFan4Lyf Yes u love how people forget that. You know why Xbox does not have Final Fantasy 14 online because they only wanted it if it went with live.
@NintendoFan4Lyf
People weren't buying PS4 over Xbox One at the start of this generation for its amazing exclusives.
Who cares. Ppl get riled up over everything. Boy who cries wolf scenario.
All I want to say is sony must be stupid if they plan to have cross-play with other console, one of the reason why casuals that only play fifa and call of duty bought ps4 is because most of their friend playing on it too.
Besides, ps4 is the only console in this gen where you can play free to play game without subscription, so the ftp online environment is going to be big compared to other console. Why sony want to give xbox and nintendo users more players.
@Knuckles-Fajita If the ps5 is winning the console wars, it will be stupid for sony to open their network to others, however if ps5/xbox2/switch2 sells evenly then yeah, sony maybe will open their network.
@PS_Nation Yeah it's really bizzare there's no backlash when last gen microsoft openly denied cross-play, but when sony does it, it's like every us media is reporting it.
Also backward compability, there's nearly no news about this when ps2 have bc with ps1, and ps3 have bc with ps1 and ps2 (fat ps3), and there's no news when ps3 slim didn't have ps2 bc. Same with nintendo console. But when microsoft has it in their e3 presser, all us media reporting it en masse telling that it's a great feature, comparin it to ps4 and all that.
Yawn. This again. As others have said, no one batted an eyelid when microsoft did this last gen, so why should Sony get so much hate this gen. Ultimately Sony are busy enough giving its install base content they actually want to play. Chances are if you want to play with your friends, they will have the same console as you anyway making this a moot argument.
@gmxs There are many plausible reasons and stubbornness most certainly isn't one of them.
@NintendoFan4Lyf
You forget about the casuals, i.e. most people who buy consoles. Those who only play Fifa and COD.
Sony would be stupid to do it. Same as if they were to release their games on multiple games. It takes away a reason to own a ps4.
Sony is entitled to such choices, whether we like it or not. Although it's kinda ironic to come here and read posts and comments complaining about something the company doesn't do unlike those other companies. XD
The 2 pillars that make for a successful platform are:
1- Exclusives that differentiate the game libraries
2- Install base that allows for 'easier' negotiations with third parties to gain exclusivity (of some sort)
If Sony start giving out their install base, then they may as well start publishing their games on other platforms.
Not gonna happen.
I sincerely don't know what to do.
Honestly everyone should just deal with Sony decision on not allowing cross play. Xbox started this since they were so behind on sales that they want it to leg up on Sony by introducing cross play and then game pass. Look what Xbox has done wrong this generation, first allowing there exclusives been on pc which slows down your console sales and second introducing game pass which it makes your exclusive sales go down because people would rather pay $10 a month than spending $60 for every exclusives which isn’t much. Everything there doing is trying to make Sony look bad
I'll buy the switch to play with x box one users. To play paladins. And maybe they ll switch off the servers in one years time. Oh these news are just sorry and pathetic.
...Gamers aren't going to leave the PS4 behind just because they could crossplay with XBO and Switch owners. That makes PS4 sound like all it has are closed-off multiplayer games, when that couldn't be further from the truth.
Crossplay isn't going to make Spider-Man, Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima, or God of War multi-platform games all of a sudden.
Im fine with this, the game looks mediocre at best. I would rather play with only ps4 owners anyway judging from past experiences, x1 chat is very immature and mostly children and a majority of pc gamers still preach the master race bs or just hack, mod, and cheat. Hard pass.
Why would ps4 want to add cross play.... They are far and away the leading console and many people buy playstation because their friends have them...allowing crossplay would be like them sayin no worries you can buy an xbox and still play with your friends..so unless everyone decides cross play is important enough to switch consoles i would not expect anything else from sony anytime soon
@ZAKtheRIPPER Trust me dude don't play it.
I have 400h in to the game when it was fun and actually trying to be different from overwatch.
In patch 64 when they introduced Star wars battlefront 2 esque card system most fans(Including me) left from then on the devs are trying hard as they can to revive the game which is not happening.
It's so full of bugs even after being year and a half in beta most of the issues are not fixed even from the early days(And this is just one of the issues that's plaguing this game)
Are people really going to care over...Paladins? This isn’t Fortnite we’re tallking about here.
hmmmmmm, I'm keeping optimistic this will be over next gen
Lets stop pretending this is a Sony problem. MS has already done this in the past and Nintendo (if they had an online community to speak of) would do the same thing in this position.
Oh, is the internet over-reacting about this irrelevance again? Ho-hum.
@3Above im sure you can play with Xbox players on the switch version of Minecraft
@SKC_Diamond Thats the point. Because neither of them have the install base advantage... right now. But when MS did last gen they shot down Sony's attempt to do cross play. And If Nintendo had the advantage they wouldnt either.
Makes no difference whatsoever. It's not like they're gonna know which console the opposition is on anyway. Also, it's funny to see Xbox players wanting so much to play with Sony players. I've always heard them say how much more superior the Xbox community is to the PlayStation community.
Pathetic.
It's a bad decision for the consumer, but it doesn't really matter right now, as we're on the tail end of this generation. However, it may be a factor against the PS5 if they continue this into that console.
Not playing Paladins on PS4 anymore due to this issue which is a shame.
@MrOso No, I will give them flak because I have friends on the other consoles that I want to play with, and all of my friends can play with our friends regardless of what console they are on, while I'm stuck here feeling like I'm back in the early 2000's. I don't care about the competition between the two companies that act like 12 year olds when dealing with each other, I want to be able to play with everyone, the same that everyone else is able to do. It's about WE players, not the competition.
It's the same reason why my PS4 is collecting dust, because they are hurting their own image to their fanbase. Cross-play between all systems is a huge selling point that they are missing out on, and the reason why I have not bought a game on ps4 in I don't know how long because I am disappointed in them. And I hate that, because I used to love Sony.
@MrOso I play on PC, not Xbox. If you ever suggest Xbox to me, I will always tell you that I will never own an Xbox. Lol
I have half of my friends on PC (that have xboxs), and half of my friends on PS4. So I would like them to consider the option of allowing cross-play between PC and PS4 like they do with Rocket League, for example. They already have the ability to enable that whenever they want and still not allow Xbox to connect with them. @#$! an Xbox. The friends that buy their games on Xbox can rot there, for all I care.
You don't have to buy a PS4 for it's exclusives, because the console to me has been a better experience and I don't play PS4's exclusives unless they are multiplayer. Literally none of my friends that own a PS4 got it for the exclusives. It was all about the controller and UI.
@get2sammyb “They really don't want the fourth person buying an Xbox and still being able to play with pals. They want everyone on PS4.”
Maybe I’m not seeing the bigger picture here but how does Sony think that not allowing cross-play will keep their player base intact and prevent them buying other consoles? Sony has sold over 76 million PS4s, has the largest install base of all consoles and is the best selling console due to it’s exclusives, if anyone’s got any intention of getting one they’ll get it regardless of whether it allows cross-play or not. If anything a PS4 player will buy a different console that allows cross-play to play with friends if they want it that much. Can’t see that happening right now but if other big games like CoD, Fortnite etc ever were to be cross-play, then I can see it happening.
@GigaGaia Cross-play may be irrelevant to some and 90% don’t care about it or whatever but that’s because this is only Paladins, if cross-play ever came to CoD, Fifa, Fortnite etc then I believe it’d become very relevant.
@3Above “Lets stop pretending this is a Sony problem. MS has already done this in the past”
So just because MS did not allow cross-play in the past, means Sony should lower themselves to their level and do the same this gen? How childish is that? Surely the best thing to do is rise above them do one better, it’s not going to affect sales, player base etc because most people will buy a PS4 for it’s exclusives, otherwise if it wasn’t for its exclusives and brand name, Xbox would probably be top dog right now with a more reliable online service, 4K Blu-ray player and the fact it’s the most powerful console.
It’s funny how Sony are handling this cross-play thing while having the PS4 slogan “This is 4 the Players” when clearly they are all for themselves.
What Sony should be doing really is allow for Cross Play in America, but ban cross play from happening anywhere else in the world if possible. The biggest disadvantage for Sony allowing cross play is enabling Xbox to tap into audiences where they barely exist (Asia, Middle East, Europe etc...). Hence they should double down on making reputable first party franchise and IPs like Nintendo, and open up cross play in US only to make them seem less like the bad guy.
@HungryWolf now i replaced my overwatch on console to pc, 2 weeks and i stay this game on pc, on toher side recently i see new services of aim bot for certain heroes, i matched with a mc cree with 100% HS in 13minutes, any OWL have 100% HS acc, why an low gold/low account level have? but all people play with M/K and this is better than console!
@adf86 except paladins was out before overwatch smh
I tossed my PlayStation when I found out PlayStation doesn't want cross platform because they couldn't stand to lose a million here and there instead of trying to make the gaming community more united. Hope they burn in hell
@GermanSausage Overwatch was out way before Paladins. Overwatch had it's first beta in October 2015 and Paladins had it's own in September 2016.
Also your a bit late to the crossplay argument since we've moved Sony actually allowing it to developers not been in a hurry to add the feature in the first place.
