Well this is going to be bloody good. Rez Infinite is already one of the best experiences you can have on PlayStation VR, and now Tetsuya Mizuguchi is back with a trippy twist on a classic: Tetris Effect. The debut trailer definitely has a Rez aesthetic to it, but it’s backed by the auteur’s signature electropop sound.
The game will be playable in 4K at 60 frames-per-second on a PS4 Pro, but it’s in virtual reality that the title’s sure to shine. Due out later this year, there’ll be a variety of classic modes like Marathon, Sprint, and Ultra – as well as all-new modes which will be revealed at a later date. We’re pretty darn stoked for this one.

I'll stick to my Gameboy for Tetris. Bit of a strange thing having this much buildup to announce a rehash of a 30 odd year old game....
@Savino Oh well, at least you know not to come back tomorrow.
This looks like a very new and interesting take on Tetris. I cannot wait to play the demo they hinted at on the livestream.
Looks good. Not sure I get the hate. This wasn't going to be Resi 8.
I think this looks great! It'll be especially good on PSVR. Love me a bit of Tetris.
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this. Rez Infinite is a borderline biblical experience in VR, and I love the artstyle and music in this trailer.
It's going to be incredible. I genuinely can't wait.
That was a good announcement but the live stream chat on here was ridiculous. What in the hell were you expecting. If it was something AAA (which let's face it is what some on here are only interested in) then it will be at the conference not on the countdown show. It's like the severe dislike for indies all over again.
How does the saying go? If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all.
@Rudy_Manchego Agreed. I guess some people will never be satisfied with anything. But, ya know what, that's the beauty of this medium called gaming: there's something for everyone.
That is the greatest over-the-top ad I've ever seen for Tetris. They're talking as if they've made the greatest scientific discovery of all time, and it's Tetris! 😆
"So you think you're good at Tetris?
Every line, every block is putty in your hand?
You instinctively know where to drop every L Block, Straight piece, and those weird squiggly ones?
Well let's see how good you are at Tetris...
WHEN YOU'RE HAVING A SEIZURE
Tetris SeizureTM - The newest evolution in gaming!"
@ShogunRok I'm pretty sure that's illegal what you are doing.
all joking aside is this actually a good game for VR, i can't imagine all that flashing and effects will be good for your eyes
just look at how bad the Tetris game on VirtualBoy was and the headaches it caused
getting a new Tetris is fine but i don't think it need to be on VR too
@FullbringIchigo Virtual Boy is hardly PSVR though
@VR_Gamer not if your blind in one eye, it's like sitting with your face against the TV screen
@FullbringIchigo I recommend you try Rez Infinite in VR if you can. Will give you a good idea of what to expect here, and you'll be a believer I'm sure.
@get2sammyb like i said during the stream VR is both too expensive and pretty useless to me with my eyesight
@FullbringIchigo Shame about your eyesight. Not sure how PSVR works for people who are partially blind really. It's a real bummer you'll never get the full effect because I guarantee it's incredible.
Let's not forget that this is the lumines devs making this and lumines has bettered Tetris in every way for me. Plus Rez Infinite's Area X is the standout VR experience I've played.
@get2sammyb best way to know in my circumstance is to put on a VR game with an eye patch or something covering one of your eyes, the effect you get while playing a VR games isn't that great
@RainbowGazelle You mean the most famous and best selling game series of all time that has been the subject of numerous studies to analyse it's addictive qualities. Considering it's longevity and continued relevance, perhaps it is the greatest scientific discovery of all time.
Oh look at that...my hype is gone for the day!
This game looks interesting. The pre-show format is good for indies, titles like spelunky 2 or guacamelee 2 is better shown in this pre-show (or psx) rather than on e3.
I'm enjoying the live chat and comments. So much salt on both sides.
I'm one of the biggest critics of Sony on here but even I have to say some of you are out of your damn minds. You don't use pre-shows or whatever this thing is Sony's doing now to announce big games. Business and Marketing 101 people. If you really expected Devil May Cry 5 or something along those lines, that's your own fault.
As for the announcement itself, Tetris is a classic and this seems like an interesting take on it. Don't know if I'll get it right away but I'm definitely interested.
@Clutch_Nixon

@Gamer83 we wasn't expecting a huge announcement but Sony had be hyping these up a bit and all we got was a little talking and a trailer for Tetris
we wasn't angry about the game but we was just expecting more than what we got
yeah some got salty (and some just had a bit of fun) but it was rather a disappointing stream
@FullbringIchigo perfect.
I love how sour so many people are about this announcement, like they were expecting The Last of Us 3 to be announced the Wednesday before E3.
How do you make a trailer for a game that we’ve all played a million times but makes me want to play it again? Like this. Man I kinda got goosebumps watching it. I love Tetris so I’m sure I’ll be getting it
I absolutely loved Rez Infinite, so this one is a no brainier !
on a side note anyone else think they missed a chance by NOT calling it "Tetrez"?
@FullbringIchigo
Of course Sony hyped it up, companies do that all the time with their announcements but again, if you were expecting Resident Evil 2 Remake or DMC 5, that's not on Sony. Serious question, why would anybody expect big announcements (if Sony has any) BEFORE the show that takes place in a few days? It makes no sense to do that. You save your heavy hitters for the big showdown not the warm-ups.
@Gamer83 like i said i wasn't expecting any big games just for the stream to be a bit bigger, if that makes sense
@WillMerfi It kinda already exists:
Still to come this week - Space Invaders, Asteroids, Arkanoid and finally Snake!!!Games you can play on your phone for free (or very cheap) but Sony will charge you a LOT more because VR hasn't taken off like they hoped...
@BAMozzy
That's not a bad idea, if someone like Mizuguchi made an Asteroids game in VR, that could be amazing. You Sir, are a genius.
@WillMerfi Sparc? I've not played it but I think we've got a review on the site somewhere.
@BAMozzy Phwoar! I would buy Mizuguchi versions of ALL of those. Don't tease me with the delicious possibilities.
@BAMozzy I will pay good money for Tetris VR by the Rez developers, especially if it meant not having it on a phone with BS microtransactions.
Also PSVR is doing quite well for itself. It's not Sony's fault if other competitors are pricing themselves out of the market.
@BAMozzy VR is still in its infancy. Gotta start somewhere .
Happy Tetris Day Everyone!
As a PS4 owner, this is kind of “meh” to me.
As a PSVR owner, this is a day one purchase. Anything with a Rez Infinite, Thumper or Polybius vibe is welcome!
@WillMerfi
I tried Sparc once and wasn’t able to find a match, which is really important for a MP game. I’ll have to try again.
This could be awesome. I thought Headmaster was going to be lame but it is still my favorite VR game to date. Think change when you out the headset on. Some games that seem rubbish are amazing. Some that seem amazing are rubbish.
All I can say is its a 'bad' day for gaming if a 34yr old game is 'highly' anticipated. If the best they can come up with copying a game that's been around for more years than most of the people in this forum, then something is wrong. I know VR is in its 'infancy' but that doesn't mean you have to go back to the roots of gaming. Each to their own of course but you can save money by just looking at the 100's of Tetris games you can play for free and with NO micro-transactional cost too if its that big a deal... Also won't have to put up with that cacophonous soundtrack and epileptic inducing visuals either...
@BAMozzy Different strokes for different folks, man. I'm almost certain I'll enjoy this infinitely more than tripe like Anthem, but the good news for all of us is that there's so much variety these days we can pick and choose what we like.
Something for everyone!
@Clutch_Nixon have fun ruining your vision
I need to know what's the song called in this ASAP!
The announcements can only get better I'm sure because this is definitely a disappointing one for me. Such an old game and not what I was expecting to hear today.
This trailer has actually made me interested in a Tetris game, a feat I'd have thought borderline impossible.
Honestly, anyone expecting major announcements from these pre-show drops deserves their disappointment.
@Pako_rubio714 I asked if they can put it up on YouTube and they liked my tweet. But realistically, they won't.
@adf86 As for PSVR doing well - I guess compared to the competition it is but as less than 5% of PS4 owners have one, its hardly taken off and become the 'next big thing', the must have item that represents the 'future' of gaming and was supposed to start the revolution in how we game.
If the Switch had sold as many headsets after nearly 2yrs, it would be considered a massive failure and its not as if it doesn't have its own 'unique' games either.
Considering the likes of OR or Vive, then PSVR has been more successful than those but I bet the Pro has been more successful and you don't need 1 specifically (as you could own a standard or slim and still play all the same games). I wouldn't be surprised if the vita was more successful too...
@get2sammyb I agree that its great to have a variety of games to cater for different tastes but I cannot get excited or 'hyped' for a game that I remember its launch over 34yrs ago and has been on almost every device (and not just gaming) since in one guise or another. Its the kind of thing you would expect 'free' with every purchase - along with a few other games (snake for example) and maybe a demo or two to get you started. Not something you expect from a so called 'quality' developer - whether classified as indie or not. Its hardly 'New' either....
@BAMozzy Well, you're more than entitled to your opinion. For me, I'm really looking forward to it. Love the art style in the trailer, love the dev's work on Rez and Lumines, love the music in the trailer... I can't wait to trance out in VR with this.
But yeah, fair enough if it's not for you.
That was a lot of buildup just for Tetris...
Expectations = False Hope. It's always best to judge anything by its own merits!
Hype can not be forced, It's Self induced.
This is NOT a old game. The level of creative additions makes this a whole new game. The addition of VR mode alone (sorry for the people that don't have one) makes it worthy of attention.
It would be great if they included the music sound tracks with this game! Definitely a welcomed bonus!!
@BAMozzy VR was always going to be a slow burner just by it's very nature alone was guaranteeing that, plus it's not a console so comparing it to Switch or Pro is hardly a fair comparison. And no it's not a "bad day for gaming" just because some are (heaven forbid) excited to play a classic game in a new way. But every time something cool gets announced there always has to be cynical, snarky types that wants to pour cold water on some people's fun while masking it as "my opinion". So forgive me if I'm getting a bit fed up of with it.
@Porco mate I'm basically blind without my glasses anyway. Three decades of gaming have nothing to do with it. I've just got an odd skull.
@wiiware Someone gets it and this way they their oen small spotlight. Instead of getting buried beneath the massive releases.
@BAMozzy Salty 😀😁😂🤣🤣🤣
Everybody who is dismissive of this clearly hasn't played Rez, Lumines or Child of Eden. Hell, even Puyo Puyo Tetris.
@RainbowGazelle It was a true study and Tetris Effect is a real thing.
Tetris is a great game. Ok maybe its not the greatest new idea ever. But have you ever seen anyone say "I dont like Tetris"? No because its a great game. With the added visual spectacle it will be awesome!
Don't know what happened here but I'm hella hyped for this. Sounds ambitious enough too and looks like it is very well directed.
@Orpheus79V Puyo puyo Tetris isnt great tbh. Way overrated, they did a good job mixing the game modes but Tetris is so less random than puyo puyo and you have a stupidly better advantage cast as the tetris player. Still a nice diversion but imo not the great game I was led to believe.
I'm surprised PSVR still alive too be honest to me it's nothing more than a gimmick that needs to die already Sony needs to focus on PS4 games not VR I think that's the reason people were disappointed last year (me included) because they only showed VR games and they are doing it again hopefully when E3 starts they show real games and not VR tech demos
I hardly play my PSVR. The headset is so uncomfortable with glasses and everything is blurry and ugly... I feel like to get contacts to enjoy it properly.
It's a essentially a novelty item, really. That's why it isn't taking off.
This looks like a visual feast for the eyes! All that stuff zipping around in VR (and 3D) is getting me all darn excited! Hope there's some good tunes in.
@BAMozzy you remember it's launch? Were you in Russia at the time?
Count me interested. The music was sublime and i loved how over the top it was. Dont shoot me, but i still don't get Rez. I will go back to it but wjay i playes seemed overated. Not played area x yet though. I do however love lumines dearly so i am all in for this on vr.
@hi_drnick Not its Russian launch but I do remember it on PC and launching on the home computers (Atari ST, C64 etc) before Gameboy came along - it took a while to spread to the west but its still a 34 yr old game and I do remember it launching in the west before the 'gameboy' made it popular.
Its probably the most cloned game ever too - and has many variations in Dr Robotnix Mean Bean Machine. I even had tetris on a 'keyring' in the 90's from a cracker (I think). If people are excited to buy and play a 34 yr old game, then so be it. Its not as if there aren't 100's (if not 1000's) of free tetris games - maybe not in VR but that's hardly a 'game-changer' for this. Its not as impressive as the Gadgetshows largest Tetris game in the world...
Anyway the point is, the game has been around for many many years and I bet everyone can play it free - no micro-transactions etc. Its sad that a developer has lost any creativity and ideas that they have to resort in making yet another Tetris!!
As a hard core Tetsuya Mizuguchi fan boy, this announcement has made my day so damn much! This is the gamer's equivalent of discovering that one of your favourite directors is making a James Bond film.
@BAMozzy The C64 version is my favorite. The music!
@GKO900 Good thing you're not in charge. VR is amazing and I hope it keeps getting better and better.
@BAMozzy It's like saying: why are they making Forza Horizon 4? You could drive a car in OutRun. It's a 30 year old game.
@get2sammyb Well I'm glad you liked it but you cannot disagree that it's not for everyone
@GKO900 Sure, it’s not for everyone — that’s fine. Not sure why it “needs to die” just because you don’t personally enjoy it though.
I watched the trailer a couple of time, if the beatiful trailer song is in the game, I think I'm in on this new trippy tetris
@get2sammyb Well that's just my opinion don't take me as a troll I love PlayStation since the PS1 but if they stopped support for the psvita that had more potential and future might as well stop supporting VR that thing didn't sell good as far as I know and now it's bargain bin price level for a reason
@get2sammyb Now you are just being antagonistic as there is a massive difference between an on-rails racer and a massive open-world game that offers much more than just getting from A to B within a set time limit - would have been better to compare Pole Position with Gran Turismo...
I can totally understand that Sony may well of wanted to kick-off with this game - temper expectation, start off at the 'bottom' and then progress up etc. In all honesty though, if this was the calibre of games that Sony reveal, then it wouldn't be difficult for the others to beat this. I am not even talking AAA games but even the indies that we expect - games like Last Night, Ori and the Will O' the Wisp, Below, Ashen, Concrete Genie, Spelunky 2 etc. VR has a lot of potentially great games coming out too - Separation, CoolPaint VR, Torn, the Impatient etc as well as Ace Combat 7 and Psychonauts 2 and that's without mentioning all the big AAA exclusives and 3rd party releases that will be competing for our time and money. Its not like I can't play Tetris for free inc MANY different variations of it on a laptop/tablet/mobile.
I loved Out-Run and that ate a lot of my money up in the arcades - at least before it came to home computers and the consoles but I wouldn't be excited by Out-Run today - even if it is also playable in VR because it is very dated now. In fact it may suit VR because it is on-rails and really only concerned with moving left or right. Its not like having a massive open world with a variety of different races, stunts, exploration etc.
@BAMozzy I'm not being antagonistic, I'm just illustrating how unfair you're being. But I get it: you don't like the game. Let's just agree to disagree.
@get2sammyb Picking a game on a 'rival' platform - especially as you know that I am also an Xbox owner - is being antagonistic. If you had at least picked a game like say Gran Turismo as I did, that would be far less so - especially as we all know you have experience of what that offers and would be more to illustrate the point rather than try to antagonise someone.
Again, you are missing the point. I have NEVER said I don't like Tetris. I used to play it a LOT back on the Gameboy and played it on PC and home computers before that too. Over the years I have played it - maybe not so frequently as I did back then because games 'evolved' and became far more interesting and exciting. I enjoyed a number of the games that took the basic premise of Tetris and added their own 'flavour' to it - such as using 'colours' and overhangs that 'drop' into the gaps (like Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine - which I also played a LOT). I even had a keyring version that had a 'smaller' grid and only 1 'spin' direction.
The point is, I cannot get excited about a game that is 34yrs old that is available on a lot of platforms free of charge - inc many variations too. Its not like getting a game you don't like at all - more like the disappointment of getting a game you already have a a game you have played many many many times when you want something 'new' and different.
We can agree to disagree if you want but you are missing the point. I never disliked Tetris, Space Invaders, Frogger, Pac-Man, Arkanoid, Asteroids etc but I would be 'equally' disappointed if any of these were announced as a 'New' game to look forward to. If you want to disagree that these 'old' games are worth being excited about - that's fine but its not 'unfair' to criticise that lack of creativity or imagination to bring a game that's been done thousands of times before. What's next, Asteroids with some 'trippy, epileptic inducing' light effects and some cacophonous symphony soundtrack because that's their 'style'?
@BAMozzy Have you played Lumines? Have you played Rez? Have you played Rez Infinite in VR?
People are excited because, like you, they already like Tetris — but they also love the aforementioned games. Fuse the two together and you have a match made in heaven.
Again, you don't have to be excited if you don't want to — it's all good. I just think you're being a little bit reductive.
I have played Rez and wasn't my thing at all - not played it in VR as I have no interest in Rez and don't have a VR headset either. I am sure I have tried Lumines but can't say for definite as its not exactly 'memorable' to me but does look familiar.
I am only speaking my opinion, as others are free to do. I cannot be excited about a game that I can basically play now and for free - without the headache inducing visuals and that awful soundtrack. Its not reductive at all and I have clearly expressed my reasoning for my disappointment too. Its not just a VR game after all and the vast majority of gamers who 'could' buy are not VR owners either.
Anyway, we are going round in circles here and if rehashing very old games is exciting for you, so be it. I was hoping for something more. Armoured Core was mentioned which could have had a bigger impact. Maybe it is that Sony wanted to start off 'low' and raise the bar each day rather than start high and then drop as the week goes on...
Not long now and we see what day 2 offers - hopefully from my perspective it will be a lot more interesting and exciting...
