Don't want to play Cyberpunk 2077 like a first-person shooter? Good news: you don't have to. In Angry Joe's interview with CD Projekt Red, the developer confirms that the open world role-playing game will feature a full melee system. In other words, you can kick arse without having to fire a bullet.
Even better, the Polish studio says that you can wield a katana -- otherwise known as a samurai sword. As if this game couldn't sound any cooler...
Think you might build a melee-based character? Kick and punch your way into the comments section below.

Now i know how i'm gonna be playing this game. Katana all the way
Wut I'm not angry with what weapons can i Use I'm angry about the first person perspective I want third person perspective.
You had me at katana.
@Hapuc They pretty much said why it's first person. It's better for immersion and the gameplay for the world they created, whereas Witcher had wide open fields for the hack and slash combat, Cyberpunk has a claustrophobic cityscape where a 3rd person camera wouldn't be as effective.
@Cornaboyzzz I still say it's too good to be true, but...CD Projekt Red would definitely be the studio to make something like this, them being driven by passion and all (instead of profit and focus-group testing).
@smelly_jr Yeah it definitely looks like a PS5 game as this point. But like you said, if there's a studio who can do something like this, it's CD Projekt. They're the best in the business.
It really does sound incredible. I can't wait to see it in action. Hopefully real soon.
@Cornaboyzzz Sorry, I had to edit your comment down — we can't really have whole articles from other sites pasted into the comments section here.
(It does sound properly amazing though)
@ShogunRok oh... Sorry about that. Maybe I can try to find to link to the article and put it here ?
@adf86
At first I was also a little let down when I found out it had first-person view, but then I rewatched the trailer and I had a flash. I remembered the trailer for Prey 2 (not the one with the weird squiggly monsters, the one that was never finished) and how I'm still pissed that I never got to play that game, that trailer was something amazing for its time (To be honest, put Johnny Cash in a trailer of anything and I will probably buy it/watch it/ play it just because of that )
Cyberpunk gives off some of the vibe I got from Prey 2, so my hype for this game is even bigger than before, which I hadn't thought possible
While I usually prefer third person camera, I love the fact that it's the biggest ''issue'' of this game, first or third person camera. If that's what people are worrying about, then it tells you the rest is pretty much perfect!
This is sounding more like a Bethesda game every day. Hopefully without all the bugs and glitches so the internet doesn't melt. Mind you The Witcher 3 had it's fair share.
I just don't get why there's character customisation if its first person. Like, if it's a FPS then fine but why let us design a character we can't see.
@Cornaboyzzz I've added a link to it in your comment, all good!
@Octane So true. The first person perspective is literally the only thing putting me off this game.
@Kai_ I'm pretty sure you can see your character in cutscenes and in conversations. I agree on the surface it seems odd but thematically it fits with the game's world where constant modification is a way of life and first person offers the benefits that I explained further up. So I think they took a "best of both worlds approach"
@Cornaboyzzz They have reconfirmed that this game is coming to ps4 and xbox 1. I wouldn't be surprised if an up-scaled, more detailed version also appears on next-gen. From all the people who have seen the gameplay, I have yet to see anyone not blown away by it.
My question is.... PS4? Or PS5? 😥
@adf86 Another reason I think they have gone with first-person is so the in-game hud can be explained as what you are seeing through your cybernetic impants. By doing this it's less like a game screen and more just what an enhanced person can see. I just hope this isn't one of those first-person games that make me nauseous after a while.
Ohh katana wielding, fist augmented, guns a blazing! I'm in! I'm in! Cyberpunk is definitely in the right hands.
Im taking credit for passing along the angry joe interview lol that was aallll me! Yep. Im important lolol.
But for real, some great info in there!!! I am DYING to get my mantis blades!!! they allow you to climb on walls too!!! Omg!!! So much hype
Ultraviolence? Gratuitous swearing?
Wow. All of a sudden, I'm so very, very out.
Oh well.
@RogerRoger Do you like The Witcher 3? This'll be fully in line with that. Loads of swearing and violence/dark themes but it's never for no reason. Always well written and decidedly mature.
@BearsEatBeets Do you happen to have a source for CDPR saying that the game's definitely coming to PS4/Xbox One?
@ShogunRok I've never played The Witcher 3, no, but I'm grateful for the attempted reassurance.
I appreciate that these developers are critically acclaimed and have no doubt they'll deliver a fantastic story with reason and purpose. I guess it's just that my preferred dark is "PG-13 Batman-Style Dark" and I don't like games that glorify or revel in the macabre. I also tolerate swearing in many things, but I draw the line at the c-word.
The older I become, the more I seem to get uncomfortable watching or playing such things. You should see me squirming through an episode of Westworld. My partner thinks it's hilarious.
@RogerRoger That's fair enough, perfectly understandable. Just didn't want you getting the wrong idea about the tone of these games!
@ShogunRok I'm really grateful you did, otherwise I might've given The Witcher 3 a try sometime and gotten a nasty shock! All the clips I've seen of it thusfar feature reasonable-sounding people chatting politely amidst well-rendered woodland.
@ShogunRok Someone asked the official Cyberpunk twitter account and they replied PC, Xbox and PS4. It's one of their replies under a tweet this morning about them reading mean tweets. Not sure if that helps
@BearsEatBeets It does, thanks!
But it's still first person? No thanks :/
told yas this was gunna flip sh*t on its head
They could do a 1st/3rd person hybrid, but then cdpr wouldn't hear the end of stupid Deus ex comparisons.
That's neat, still wish there was a third person view though.
