Despite recent news that CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077 will release on PS4 and not next generation, by the sounds of things it's still a long way off.
In an interview with Polish website Bankier (translation provided by WCCFTech) studio president Adam Kicinski claimed that the reason so little gameplay footage has been shown is because the game is still in a pre-alpha stage. He also said that the demo shown at E3 earlier this month "is the most polished part of the game we have now."
We could be waiting at least a year or so for the Polish studio's long-awaited return, then -- although the fact that Kicinski mentioned that 350 people are already working on the game, with more staff to come, shows that they're working hard on it.
Will Cyberpunk 2077 be worth the wait? Get modifying in the comments below.

So announced 2012, teaser trailer in 2013.. still in Alpha stage.. but FF7 Remake is a problem?
So 2020 then
@kyleforrester87 probably because you can trust in CDPR to deliver a polished game, so we gladly give it time. The others might spend a lot of time and it might still turn out bad
@tatsumi because they made one great game that still had its share of bugs?
Cross-gen game confirmed. Coming to PS12 and NinXbox 4 in 2077.
Not exactly unusual for E3 demos to be fair. But yes, it’s going to be cross-gen or PS5 only.
@tatsumi That's a matter of perspective to be fair, personally I found FF15 to be a better game than the Witcher 3 although I understand that isn't a popular opinion. (I do get that FF15 was disappointing overall)
But in terms of "When is the right time to announce a game is in development?", I don't see how you can be critical of one developer and not another for announcing years in advance.
It'll be in a similar position to what GTA V was in at the beginning of this generation/end of last: take advantage of the massive install base of the previous gen while providing an early showcase of the graphical and gameplay capabilities of the incoming hardware.
It will be released on next-gen console.
Woo hoo - 2018 release ahoy!
@kyleforrester87 i agree with you. I prefer Final Fantasy 15 and had a much better time playing it. I know that i will be in the minority here.
I also get frustrated when everyone hailed CDPR as being super generous with the 16 'free additional content' packs they released after the witcher 3 was released. There was nothing in those packs that said anything other than 'hi, this is content that would have been in the game, but we cut it to play a PR stunt by giving it away for free'. Didnt work for me.
Besides, in response to tatsumi, no matter what you think about Square Enix's output, you cant accuse them of putting out unpolished games. They are among the least buggy i have played this gen personally. And there is no way Final fantasy 7 will be released in a poor state. No chance at all. The game might change somewhat and we may be unhappy with it, but it will be super polished - of that i am certain.
I reckon cyberpunk will quietly transition to a next gen title only and we wont see it on shelves before 2020.
Eh. Wasn't expecting to see this game anytime soon, so this isn't exactly a shocker. I can wait.
And maybe during that dev time they can change their minds on the whole "no third-person" thing?
Maybe?
Please?
@Rob_230 To be honest I'm not having a go at CDPR for announcing this so early, just saying it seems a bit off to be critical of FF7 (and others) while giving CDPR a free ride on this.
Personally I'm in the "it'll get here when it gets here" camp and I don't really mind any game being teased early. Rather that than a situation like Half-life 3. I just wish Valve would turn around and say "Yes it's coming, but not before 2030!"
@kyleforrester87 TO BE FAIR KYLE, FFXV came out in 2015 and it's still not finished.
We have a right to be wary of Square Enix at this point. Especially Nomura. The little git.
@ShogunRok haha, that's a fair point. I just wanted to use a Trailer Park Boys gif.
@Welkin96 honestly I'm fine with those games being PS5 games. I'd rather play them in the best possible way (in terms of graphics and resolution) the first time round so I don't mind waiting for them to come on stronger hardware.
I'm absolutely positively sure that the wait will be worth it. Hopefully for FF7, too.
@kyleforrester87 to be fair as well FF games are very well made & look & sound stunning as well seems some give 1 rule to others & more to the rest here mate
@kyleforrester87 Mass Effect: Andromeda is the best game.
@PS_Nation it's a modern classic.
@ShogunRok Im sure that FF7R will be a service game or with episodes just like FF15 which i yet have to play. With the Royal Edition which still is not complete i miss the PS1 times with a Complete Edition game which is the original with a 100 plus hours in there. FF7, FF8, FF9, FF10, FF10-2,FF12 EVEN the FF13 series.
I would love to see the Legend of Dragoon, Koudelka, Legend of Legaia, Suikoden, Parasite Eve but those times are gone. Now we get cut up games with DLC's, microtransactions and live services. Ah i miss those good old times. 😁 😆
I'm guessing 2020 at the earliest. Won't be surprise if it got pushed further. I can wait. Also hoping for a Limited Edition console for CYBERPUNK 2077, either on the PS4 Pro or PS5...
Probably not realistic but if it's as far off as 2020 I'd rather they just make it a PS5 and next Xbox game.
Definitely no earlier then 2020 now.
Honestly, f*** CDPR at this point. I'm so tired of games being announced 10 years before they're ready to even be demoed to the general public. It's officially on the "it comes out when it comes out" list of games not worth being excited for.
@CK97 It was announced in 2013 to let people know what their game was after The Witcher 3. E3 this was Cyberpunk's first proper reveal.
Oh but i'm sure the media will constantly harp on it for being constantly shown off for years with no release in sight like Sony always do, right? Lol
@kyleforrester87 people will forgive anything if it pushes the right buttons... gratuitous, bloody violence and kinky sexual tastes?.. well, we know the baseline of humanities inclines now i guess.
@Gamer83 if they did that it would simply be a PS4 game locked to a PS5 for play.... why? Why would you want that?... its intended for current gen, so even if they do lock it to PS5 we wont see much improvement... just expense... more expense.
Lets hope that gives them more time to make it third person then.
If it ends up as good as The Wicher 3, then it will be worth the wait.
Quite happy for this to rock up whenever CDPR are done - from what I’ve seen so far it’ll be worth the dev time and the wait, and it’s not like I don’t have anything to play in the meantime eyes huge backlog of games 😀
Pre-alpha?
Yeah, I could see this being cross-gen.
Guess we'll see.
Every big game will be on PS4 because of its install base for at least the first two years of PS5. It would be crazy to pass up sales on PS4.
As long as no big mistakes show up Sony will not be able to keep up with demand for that long anyway. PS5 will have a very small user base for several years.
@tatsumi They literally made one good game which is the wild hunt.
Witcher 2 was ok at best and witcher 1 was horrible in every way.
@GAMINGLORY oh lord that would be the one exclusive console I would have to buy no matter the cost -_-
Just remember this is taking so long bc when it does eventually release nothing will come even remotely close to it for the following ~5 years
I'll get this on PS5 then 😉
I'm still not expecting this game to be on PS4, will be delayed to PS5.
shrug.. meh. It'll be a PS5 title and scaled down for the PS4/XB1.
Personlly, the "gameplay demo" that wasn't shown to anyone except press who then came out and had dumb "what I saw blew me away but you can't see it so mwah" articles. Rubbed me the wrong way. So.. meh.
All this next-gen talk and here I am, giddy as a schoolgirl for Sonic Mania Plus to come out on physical disc.
