Shenmue III was delayed recently, and by the grace of the Phoenix Mirror it looks like it needs it. The title just doesn’t seem to be coming together at all: new footage (skip to 2:15 in the embedded video) shows an improvement to Shenhua’s character model, but protagonist Ryo Hazuki and the rest of the cast still look wrong. The new footage is interspersed with some old clips of environments we’ve already seen – at least these look decent.
The footage is pre-alpha and the long-awaited sequel has been delayed for a reason, but at what point do we begin to worry? Remember that this game was originally due out last year, and while delays and schedule changes are inevitable, the real concern is that the project just doesn’t appear to be making any meaningful progress. It barely looks like a proof of concept, and it’s supposedly due out next year.

This is a three year old Kickstarter that hasn't shown any gameplay yet. It worries me when I lay in bed at night.
I worry that when the day finally comes and we get a developer gameplay walkthrough, it's going to look absolutely terrible. That's when the real panic begins.
Seems more and more like a 10 year development lol
Hope they release 1 and 2 soon!
Is this a horror game because those characters look terrifying against those lush environments.
I dunno, that clip doesn't look THAT bad to me. I guess I expected it to look more similar to Shemmue II than something like Yakuza 6 though.
Looks decent to me.
If this prompted Sega to finally rerelease 1&2 I will be more than happy. Needs work for sure but it doesnt look that terrible.
Don't mean to sound negative, but the character models DO NOT blend well with the environments.
It's like 2017 environments with 2008 models.
It'd be like playing Uncharted 4 with Uncharted 1 models.
Good thing this game is getting a delay, it needs it.
Not everythings got to look like Horizon and God of War to be fair. It's just graphics. If the game play and story hold up it doesn't really matter. Not that I'm a fan of this silly franchise anyway.
@sinalefa those two games ARE being released in an HD collection
Looks like a bunch of Animatronics on a paper stage....
@TricksterTyler
My point is, if Shenmue 3 was not announced, I doubt Sega would have moved its butt to release the collection.
So if 3 ends up being a disaster or is cancelled, it will be worth it for me IF it was the catalyst for the Collection.
The character models need some work for sure. It looks like they’ve been doing a lot of developing the environment and the characters are coming up. The eyes and main characters face (along with others) seem more out of place as a run through the video in my head as a write though...
It does have to be difficult to make a sequel to what was the most expensive game ever made on a budget though.
I really hope it’s a matter of what they’re doing first.
I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and say they are trying to make it look like Shenmue, which was a Dreamcast game nearly 20 years ago, and in that respect they are succeeding.
Not saying it's a good choice, a bad choice, or the right choice, but that's the feeling I get. They are trying to make it look like a modern game yet still look like the old games, but half the team is doing 1 thing and half the team the other and nobody is on the same page.
The environments look nice. Not sure what's going on with the characters though. The game has a small budget, so perhaps expectations need to be scaled accordingly, otherwise people are going to end up very disappointed.
first of all, the original shenmue games have not held up at all and are terrible to play by today's standards. this new entry only has a fraction of the budget needed to even make a game on the same level as those previous titles. this is not going to be the AAA game some people expected. it will be a "iii" game — this term should be used more often. not quite a traditional indi title, but a large scaled indi game... and with that comes many caveats. lower your expectations people.
I really think it's time that KickStarter been banned from funding game development, some have been successfull but the so called top titles like Might No.9 and this have shown nothing but worry and dissapointment. For M#9 people are questioning where did most of the money go for that project and during its development they had the cheek to announce another new Kickstarter for a other project.
I understand Kickstarter and how it could bring back lost genres and past game titles or new titles for certain franchises but it needs to have checks in place that the money is going in the right direction and clarity is shown during the Dev process.
Im sorry what is so terrible it looks good. People should learn that not everything will look like a 100 million game. 🙄
@sinalefa Could not agree less i would be heartbroken if one of my favorite games would crash and burn like that. For a simple HD upgrade game. 🤨😔
Nice environments? Check
Wooden animations? Check
Random kid being weird? Check
Ryo being hilariously awkward around other humans? Check
It's Shenmue all right. Looks ready to me, give it us now
I'm baffled that after all this time, they're still showing pre-alpha footage. I'm all for games taking however long they need to be good, but I wonder how long will it take before we get "proper" footage, let alone a release.
Actually not that bad.
"at what point do we begin to worry?"
If videogames are high on your worry list, I'd say you haven't much to worry about.
These Shenmue stories over the past year and how hilariously bad this game looks have been a never-ending source of entertainment.
@DerMeister I seriously doubt their "proper footage" will look much better than this.
@naruball I'm not expecting it to look phenomenal, but I don't really care about that (I actually wouldn't be shocked if the staff were cryogenically frozen since Shenmue 2 and only came out to make 3, thus can't make current gen graphics). My issue is that this game's apparently still in an early stage despite three years of work. Again, games take time but you'd think there'd be more after this long.
Why does Dragon Quest get a free pass for having similarly hideous character models
I dont know, I dont expect amazing graphics, its a sequel to a cult dreamcast game with a fairly limited audience. As long as the game is functional, has its creative freedom and is true to the originals, I'm looking forward to playing it.
What amazes me are the designs of those faces. The way they are drawn, in a way. They really look wrong, and it's not a question of budget. I'm not talking of animations, or lightning, or else. But just the drawing, the 3d model they use. Who approved that and decided that it was ok to show to people ?
Just give me the originals Dreamcast models ! Maybe they would look dated but they would surely look okay. Here ? That's not Ryo.
WTF is going on with that game ?
Looks acceptable for pre alpha.
Did this series ever sell well? I've never played it so I didn't really get the hype when it was announced on E3.
Looks fine to me. They are not going for hyper-realism but an update of the original's aesthetic and there are more than enough games trying to replicate reality.
@NathanUC I'm with you mate. In my head when I watch it I'm thinking of Shenmue 1&2. Most people are watching thinking of God of War!
@Kai_ probably for the same reason the FFVII Remake gets moaned for being delayed EVEN though both Shenmue 3 and FFVII:Remake were announced in 2015
fanboyisum
if one publisher or developer does something than it's fine but if another does the exact same thing suddenly it's wrong
This is the same footage from Aug 2017. You did an article back then mocking the lame graphics.. why is it here again?
I don't know, I think it has its charm.
Considering I didn’t think they’d even release it, this is impressive. I still doubt it’ll ever come out though. At least it looks like shenmue 😂😂
The character models need reworking over again from scratch. They look like HD versions of the original blocky models from Dreamcast.
The worlds look stunning, by the models look vastly it of place and need evolving the 18 years since the originals, like tekken, like virtua fighter. If Akira looked the same in virtua fighter 5 as he did in 3, there’s be severe concern. These shenmue models are behind virtua fighter 5 which is now ancient but came from the same teams and graphic engines. What’s going on? Bite the bullet, delay it 12 months and give the fans what they are waiting for and what the backers have invested in. These models need to go
