Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 got blown wide open earlier this week thanks to the game's big reveal event. The show covered just about everything that's going to be in this year's release, from the usual competitive multiplayer to zombies and, of course, a battle royale mode. If you're not up to speed, you can read all about it by clicking through here.
It's safe to say that we've seen mixed reactions to Black Ops 4. There's undeniable outrage over the fact that the game won't have a traditional single player campaign, and a lot of people are annoyed that the title's chasing the battle royale craze, even if it comes as no surprise. But at the same time, we're seeing a lot of positives, with dedicated players in particular seemingly very happy that boost jumps and wall running have been removed in order to provide a more old-school experience.
And so, as always, we want to know what you lot think. Are you a long-time Call of Duty fan? Are you sold on Black Ops 4 yet? Are you upset that there's no single player campaign? Vote in our polls, and then feed us some honest opinions in the comments section below.

Let's riot against the death of singleplayer!
Haven't bought a CoD since the original Modern Warfare on PS3. Even if I had, as a fan of lengthy single-player campaigns, I wouldn't touch this at all.
I've got Far Cry 4 to finish, and will have the Far Cry 3 remaster at the end of the month. No need for CoD Black Ops Loot Box Edition.
Not my cup of tea
I like the fast paced gameplay, the shooting mechanics and the futuristic style of CoD. So Yea I will buy it. Not having a campaing is lame but not a dealbreaker. Also I am not a fun of BR games, but since it is there I will give it a try.
Interested in seeing more of the battle royale mode tbh.
Waiting for Battlefield V instead.
Last CoD game I sunk a bunch of time in was Modern Warfare 2. Others I've played bits and pieces here and there when others had the copies.
Still waiting for that CoD 4 remaster standalone to get cheaper so I can get it.
I feel sorry for them guys 💀
I do kind of keep waiting for the COD game that will lure me back in. The zombies looks interesting and I like the bots. At the same time, the only value I ever saw in Cod was the epic single player campaign.
I wont buy another until sp is restored quite honestly
I think Activision would be better off giving the Call of Duty series a year off or two. (Or until Sony announces the PS5).
Similar to how Ubisoft gave Assassins Creed series a break for a year. (Besides one small game, and that bad movie)
Happy there is battle royale for that reason will be buying it day one. Not sure the lack of single player will really have too much of an impact on sales. Those who buy it for single player story tend to sell it afterwards therefore not generating money much revneue for the company. Multi-player the game is kept for a decent amount of time reducing the 2nd hand copies in the market place.
I am on the fence to be honest. While it's different (which fans have been shooting for for years) I am afraid it might be too different. From what I have read and heard it's more like CoD meets Overwatch meets Rainbow Six.
While I am not against it I am concerned. I already have Overwatch if I want a team hero shooter but sometimes I just I want a plain and simple FPS that don't relay on gimmicks like special abilites, team composition and such and Black Ops 4 ain't going to be that game anymore I fear.
I think I might preored it at least and try the beta and make my decision after I play it.
We all know the real reason they dropped the single player campaign. It cost a lot of money to make a campaign and with shareholders asking for larger profits they had to cut something. It wasn't a design choice, it was a financial one.
@zimbogamer absolutely that. And yet we, the customer, needs to pay the same for what is clearly less content. I have said it before, why on earth call the game black ops 4 if it is not continuing the story of the previous 3. Call it COD: Online and be done with it.
@Rob_230 it's just cause BLOPS is a popular series within COD so they are using the name to sell copies. Listen I don't hate on COD for the sake of it and every now and again I will play one cause the gunplay is fun. It's just ridiculous that they are saying the campaign is not in for reasons other than. Activision wanting more cash.
This is like the junction in the road for Disco and Rock. Two different cultures with different fans on either side.
Im firmly on the best side. Single player 4 life.
I think the lack of a campaign is a big mark against it, even if it's a pretty predictable move since the series' main demographic prefer the MP. Somehow it seems like yet another COD game. shrug
[Insert single player meme here]
No campaign, No Buy, plain and simple
The game should retail cheaper as it hasn't got a campaign.
I'd be looking forward to the battle royale mode but without a single player campaign I'm not sure If I want to buy it at full price.
If Battlefield has a campaign I'll probably just get that.
I got extremely bored of PUBG very quickly and don't like the building mechanics of Fortnite BR, so I'm definitely open for a different take on the Battle Royale genre.
Can't wait to see what BFV will offer on May 23rd!
@Shepherd_Tallon but why? What is the reason to leave singleplayer behind in a cod game! People can't honestly think this game took too much effort when it looks so similar to blops III...graphics almost the same, weapons similar...so why? To make a battle royale mode that will never ever compete with Fortnite?
I'm pretty much done with Call of Duty at this point. Most modern shooters have gotten stale for me. If I'm gonna play an online game, it's gonna be something like Smash Bros, not this.
I used to like the campaigns in these kind of games, but I don't feel attracted to FPS games anymore. Unless 'Prey 2' pops up some day, it's a genre I don't really care about.
I probably wouldn't have bought anyway, as Call of Duty isn't my kind of game. Without single player, there's no way I'm buying it.
The last COD I played was the first Black Ops. Hated it with a passion.
@Deadlyblack I sent you a message on Twitter with a MW download code. I think it’s for the full game.
Absolute pants.
CoD MP, whilst popular, has always been about playing how you want. Obviously there are a lot of 'team' modes but not many play as a 'team'. Often its a bunch of randoms running around doing there 'own' thing within the set parameters. Take domination, you may get some that just want to run and capture any point rather than playing tactically and trying hold just 2 which can flip spawns and make it difficult for those in the team that try to play tactically. You could get players that won't jump on flags - because that puts them at risk of getting shot and ruining their K/D so you end up getting killed because it takes much longer to capture flags.
In the last game, WW2, they made it far less easy to custom build your class in the way you want to play. This time, if you like a certain specialist, you may not get to play as that because there is only 1 specialist of each type on each team. Its also dropping from 6v6 to just 5v5 too.
To me it doesn't feel like a lot of thought actually went into this. BO3 was successful - regardless of the Advanced Movement BUT that is a 'sore' topic in the community. Black Ops 2 was successful too so why not take Black Ops and remove the Advanced Movement? Now you have Black Ops 4. What's currently #trending? Battle Royale - OK lets stick that in. Lets not do a campaign but give them an extra Zombies Map instead - something they often craft in months for each DLC release. People were disappointed that Mob of the Dead didn't come with the Zombies DLC for BO3 so lets remaster that and instead of giving it as a 'pre-order' bonus that people get free after a few months, we will stick it on the Disc and that will make up for any lack of campaign...
All of the modes can be monetised, all offering different 'loot' crates so people will buy BR, MP or Zombies specific crates...
At least there are games like Spider-Man, Tomb Raider, Red Dead 2, Spyro etc as well as games like BioMutant, Metro Exodus, Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us 2, Days Gone, Cyberpunk 2077 etc to offer Single player gaming - some may do MP too BUT they are all expected to be Story driven SP games first and foremost
If not having SP reflected in an actual improvement to the rest of the package and to the price I would be more enticed but I doubt it does. Still asking for 60, I would want at least 17 traditional MP maps and at least 5 zombie maps to start with.
In its defence, I'm not too bothered about the lack of an SP. It's not a game anyone buys for SP and a lot of people don't even touch it, so arguably it's a good way to save resources. Plus Blops 3's was one of the worst I've ever played so it's probably a good call.
In it's offence, it completely ignores the fanbase protesting futuristic settings, the rap music is cringy as hell, and the aesthetic is dreary and looks exactly like the previous 2 Blops games.
I've been impressed with what I've seen so far. It looks fast and colorful, and that's exactly what I want in my first person shooters. I'll try out the battle royale mode since I have never jumped into the Fortnite scene. I'm likely to be joining the fray Day 1.
I enjoyed single player portion of cod games, I though cod blop 4 will return the single player campaign to blop 1-2 standard, not axe it
@Shepherd_Tallon but there's a thing...I don't mind the microtransations in fortnite cause 1-they are cosmetics...2-the game itself is free!
Now if we spend 70 euros in a game that gives us less than last years game, and the last blops, and the last and the last...then I think we are just wasting money!
I understand they have big costs but don't forget that COD used to be the fastest selling franchise and whatever...so it's going to take lots of years and years and years until activision loses money!
@RegularGameFan Battle Royale is just a quick cash grab
@Shepherd_Tallon if they did this: COD multiplayer zombies and campaign 70 euros. Battle royale=free! Then I would believe they would have massive success!
Meh of Duty
EA: Well at least SOMEONE agrees with us that 1P games are irrelevant to the common gamer.
Yes Ik Crash & Spyro are Activision but CoD is way more popular than either of those 2 franchises unfortunately...
I really enjoyed WW2 last year, but I wasnt a fan of any of the MW or BOps titles. I also am generally SP only, so the combo of no SP and going back to a more modern setting mean I could not care less about this game. Was really hoping that CoD WW2 meant we're going to see more WW12 shooters. Ah well.
@hotukdeals Wait they make no revenue? How about the €60 i pay?
@BAMozzy I totally agree i think they could reduced the price. Because im sure there will be microtransactions a seasonpass and ofcourse lootboxes. As they always complain about the price of the singleplayer. The multiplayer looks nice but the Battle Royale mode for me personally does not make up the difference. 😁
The sad thing is unless sells reflect other wise I'm sure this will be their MO goin forth.. no single player no buy.
COD used to have excellent campaign modes but they have regressed over the years as they chase the child market of streamers, youtubers, twitchers (why do they sound like types of Zombies) and now Battle Royale. Let's face it, Fortnite is so popular because it is free and school children all play it together, I tried it and frankly it was boring.
I will admit that this games version sounds much more interesting but can we not pretend it's new or innovative. Everything they have said about it sounds like every Battlefield game for the last 15 years or so but as a last man standing match.
The FIFA/COD community will lap it up and love it's microtransactions/loot boxes and other free to play mechanics in a paid game. Me, I'll be playing Spiderman, God of War and whatever Nintendo cooks up this year and if I want some FPS action I'll pop in DOOM 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser They were saying that the engine allows them to create maps very quickly - from Eurogamer:
"We have been developing advanced engine tools for our developers to be more effective and more efficient in building large open spaces for a long time.
This game, actually, from the early days we started a heavy push to build a new technology we call superterrain. It allows our artists and level designers to essentially paint terrain into the map in a fast and fluid way, and also build it into a massive open space that can stream very easily and efficiently for the engine."
This was in reference to the Battle Royale and fact that its only been part of the BO4 plan for a very, very short time. We know they can churn out 4 MP Maps and a new 'large scale' Zombie Map with 'easter eggs' etc every couple of months.
A lot of the specialists were in BO3 and no doubt, a lot of the weapons will be 'similar' to the large database of weapons they have created - apply a make-over and tweak a detail here or there and you have everything you need for a 'new' game - hardly a 3yr project.
They did say the game was never going to have a traditional campaign but I would not be surprised if they were going to create CoD:Destiny but after Destiny 2, Activision told them to drop it to make Battle Royale. Destiny has potential to monetise the campaign if its more open and online - especially if others can see your character's outfit and camo's - that wouldn't be a traditional campaign...
Use to be really into call of duty, try hit max rank, do all challenges. Take part in all the clan stuff when it was there.
Now it's dead to me, I've had enough. They even spoiled my favourite one when they remastered MWR.
Not played one since.
I'm curious as to how they plan on justifying the normal price tag without including a single player campaign. I'm not seeing a wealth of extra MP content. They're not hiring A-list actors for roles in a campaign, so they had better include a HELL of a lot more MP modes and maps if they're going to charge full price. And no, a BR mode doesn't count as a mode, because it's a fad, and they could very easily make a standalone free to play BR COD game and just charge $40 for this.
"The campaign Mason, WHERE IS IT?!"
meh.. i'll pass. i've largely only played CoD for the campaigns since black ops (and some of those i borrowed rather than purchased). the multiplayer has been mostly terrible since MW3 imo. i thought the campaign for WW2 was pretty good, and the War mode in the multiplayer was ok - kinda reminded me a bit of Operations from killzone3 only not nearly as good. only three maps though, so i kinda got bored with it after 2-3 hours (which is the most i've played CoD mp since black ops) - i kinda liked how people didn't seem to play it for their k/d ratios. battle royale in call of duty just sounds like a terrible idea to me.
looking at the trophy stats, 25% finished the campaign in WW2, whilst 21% got to prestige 1 (level 55) in mp. that's a big chunk to gamble on.. i suspect that black ops 4 did have a campaign and it got scrapped after the backlash on infinite warfare with the futuristic stuff, and they didn't have enough time to start over from scratch. will be interesting to see if next year's will have a campaign, as it's back to infinity ward. since most of their best talent jumped ship to create respawn, they've been the weakest of the three teams for me.
I'm not paying 60$ for a Call of Duty Battle Royal. No way.
BR is already getting bland and obviously the market is oversaturated with it as is. I hate to see where things are going to be in several months when BO4 drops.
If anything it should come as DLC, its simply not worth the value otherwise. And for god's sake do something different!! Make it end game content...where the second to last man standing is the "boss" and after being killed drops unique high grade specialty loot for the Last Man standing. Idk I don't get paid for it, but why... WHY rehash something that's been done 100 times already AND show up to the party several months late anyway?
As this poll shows, and anybody with their finger even slightly on the video game pulse already knows- nobody wants that. It's not to late. Good news is the games not out; you can still save face. Look at it as having an amazing DLC on your hands, just add in a fully fleshed out campaign, preferably with some rpg thrown in, and PEOPLE WILL BE HAPPY!
I would gladly skip the annual CoD release this year [that I no longer care about anyway], and give you guys the time you need to fix your mistake and make a better game..... You can have my 60$ next year if you come through, or you can have 0$ now if you decide to go through with this incredibly stupid and greedy endevour. (and probably forever honestly- there are so many other games, especially shooters, to choose from nowadays.)
Your business model isnt going to work. Do it right, dont rip us off, or you don't get our money. Plenty of other options these days.
@Shepherd_Tallon I think they should hire me!
At the start of PS4 life I would buy shooter games on low cost sale just to play the campaign. Today games make me not even care to pay sub $10 for them!!
Will save some cash on this one, its not like anything better coming out that month L
@Shepherd_Tallon I bet they knew people would flip with the no singleplayer thing...but did it anyways
## the zombies, or give us a single player game Only Cheaper.and we can add multiplayer if we want It.✌
Get rid of the Zombies , or give us a cheaper single player game with the option of adding multiplayer if we Want to. Loyalty to your grass root gamers.
I'm one of the few (on the internet anyways, sales figures will tell the true tale) that has been waiting for the single player campaign in cod and similar titles to disappear. I haven't booted up a campaign in cod since the ridiculous airport terrorist scene from way back, lol. I have nothing against the idea of a single player campaign; I just have never thought of cod as a narrative driven experience. I always figured that one day they'd sell the single player game for $30 or so and the multiplayer for $40 or something similar. All told I'm digging bo4 a lot; its been years since I've played and it feels great.
