Despite a bunch of information coming out of Insomniac regarding Spider-Man lately, it still feels like the developer is keeping some details close to its chest. For example, we know that you'll be spending some of the game playing as Mary Jane, but quite how her missions will play is yet to be revealed.
Still, Game Informer does have some fresh info on the game's leading lady. According to the creative director on Spider-Man, Bryan Intihar: "Mary Jane is going to surprise a lot of people in this game. A lot of people. She is one of my favorite characters in the game”.
Insomniac's version of the character works as an investigative journalist for the Daily Bugle, and is well aware of Peter Parker's red and blue alter ego. When the game starts, the pair won't have seen each other for six months, though their relationship has been on again, off again for some years. Insomniac wanted Mary Jane to be more than just a damsel in distress for this adventure. "When she was introduced in the ‘60s, it was not unusual for a character like that to be the love interest or the damsel in distress or other outdated roles. So, we thought, ‘What can we do to give her more agency?'" Says Christos Gage, the game's co-writer.
It's certainly an interesting spin, and we're definitely curious t see how she plays in the final game.
Peter Parker, meanwhile, is working as a scientist, but Insomniac is keeping quiet on exactly where. The dynamic between him and Spider-Man is that, while the superhero side of his life is going well, his regular life is tough; he's struggling with money and getting his career off the ground. "He’s on the verge of becoming an adult, and he’s dealing with a lot of the things people at that age dealing with – student loans, trying to start a career, struggling with money – any number of things," Says Intihar.
We're looking forward to seeing the more human story threaded into Spider-Man, and how it plays out. Are you interested in playing as Mary Jane in Spider-Man? Swing by the comments and let us know.

Did MJ get super powers in one of the comics?
Spider-Gwen or bust.
In a perfect video game world Spiderman would have released last September before Kratos, b/c investigative reporting and student loans aren't getting me excited right now. Maybe in August I'll be interested again.
@adf86 She briefly had spider powers during a storyline called Spider Island, where an outbreak of a genetically engineered virus caused a whole bunch of people all over Mahnattan to develop spider powers. There was also a character a while back called Jackpot who they teased as possibly being Mary Jane under the costume, though it ultimately turned out to be someone else.
I'm all for Mary Jane taking an active role in the game, though I'm not sure I like the idea of basically turning her into Lois Lane. There's already more than enough investigative reporters in the superhero world, is that really the best they could come up with?
This sounds like a good design idea because honestly, as hyped as I am for Spiderman, the open world action adventure thing has been done ad nauseam at this point and so games have to throw in something different as far as I’m concerned. Changing protagonists and play styles is one way.
@playstation1995 That's a great idea. I also usually like detective work in games like the Arkham series. Stealth and that would make it interesting. I'm also pretty sure they'll be going the strong female road which suits me fine.
Oh yeah definitely.batman arkham knight stealth is great.word up son
I just got my issue of Game Informer. Time to freak out over Spider Man for the next half hour.
Didn't she die in the comics because Peter Parker's- ahem, web fluid- was radioactive and gave her radiation poisoning? I'm sure I heard that.
EDIT: Yep. Happened: https://www.cbr.com/i-love-ya-but-youre-strange-that-time-spider-man-killed-mary-jane-with-his-radioactive-sperm/
@Clutch_Nixon Gama Bomb
@Donald_M Alright, thanks mate. Wonder whether them saying "MJ will surprise people" is them referring to her having a much more active role outside of been a journalist
Bad surprise...
(sigh) What's the point of having Mary Jane in the game if she's basically Betty Brant? They might as well have Kraven the Hunter and making him look and fight like Dr Octopus.
@Clutch_Nixon That was more of a what-if scenario though. For example, the current series Renew Your Vows takes place in an alternate universe where they have a kid together and fight crime as a family, which would imply that his...webbing...is perfectly normal aside from carrying his mutation.
@adf86 In the Exiles Universe she was the one that got bit by the spider and not Pete. She wears the same costume so she cut her hair to make the mask fit.
@Ryu_Niiyama Ok, that's interesting. Wonder how much story cues they will take from the comics.
Great to hear. I don't know why other people are disappointed, were you really expecting her to have super powers or be costumed?
