Tomb Raider’s official website has updated teasing an announcement for 6AM PDT (1PM GMT) tomorrow. The blank page shows a solar eclipse, but cyber sleuths have done some digging into the website’s HTML and discovered a 14th September release date. Square Enix did say that it would launch soon after the reveal, so six months is a pretty prompt hype cycle.
The blurb reads: “Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the climatic finale of Lara’s origin story.” There's no word on platforms or any other information, but we know that this is being developed by Eidos Montreal while Crystal Dynamics busies itself with The Avengers. Stay tuned tomorrow for the full reveal, which you’ll of course find here. (Assuming no money hats are involved this time!)

Please let it not be a timed exclusive on either console. Let everybody play it at the same time.
Cool cool cool. Not the biggest fan of the direction they have taken TR, all seems very "me too!" sometimes but it's a new TR game so how can I not get hyped? I'm sure it'll be good. The other ones were fun enough, and great on occasion.
Super excited for this title, although the last two Tomb Raider games enjoyed critical and commercial success, I do feel that they are a little under appreciated as you don't hear them brought up very often (in the same way Uncharted crops up for example).
I absolutely loved these games and while they aren't as important to me as Uncharted, I still think they are incredible titles, a new game in the series will earn a pre order from me.
I hated Rise of the Tomb Raider, so I hope this one is better, because I did enjoy the reboot.
YEah I love Tomb Raider enough to play at launch but was disappointed with Rise of the Tomb Raider.
The 2nd game was super generic with the eeeeeeevilll global conspiracy. Doubt we'll go back to the sweet cult from the first game but eh, we can dream.
@YummyHappyPills you used Star Wars as an example of the second of a trilogy being worse as in The Empire Strikes Back?
well lets hope they don't make it a timed exclusive like the last one, that almost killed the series because it sold so pooly
@carlos82 probably on about the prequel and sequel films
@JoeBlogs I hated all the systems they smothered on top in Rise, and the writing (which was already poor) took a huge step backwards for me.
Different strokes for different folks, though.
@YummyHappyPills @FullbringIchigo to be fair I assumed that too but I'm trying to blank out the prequels from my memory 😉
@carlos82 the prequels weren't that bad just different (and before anyone brings up Midiclorians as Qui-Gon said in Episode I they allow you to COMMUNE with the Force they are NOT the source of it as many people mistakenly think) but coming off over 20 years of hype that the OT created what did you expect, they were never going to live up to that
@Cassetticons Yeah, the 2nd game evil global conspiracy story is cheap, I hope the story is more about the tomb / object that lara seek rather than about her enemy or about her parent like the 2nd one.
@get2sammyb I heard from eurogamers the writer is not free to write about lara, the story is all crystal dynamics choice. (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-01-17-writing-lara-croft).
The quote is ""But quippyness and the devil-may-care attitude suggests confidence and resilience Lara doesn't have yet, so it didn't feel in-line with her character to be that confident and that quippy. Crystal just didn't want the same tone to the character. That wasn't my decision, but I had to write to their vision, and I completely understand that. It's a darker game."
@Bluetrain7 I think it will be funny if the game is a 1 year switch exclusive
I hope after this game lara can become her confident old self like in the ps1 tomb raider. For friends, she only need her butler (that she can lock in the freezer manor lol).
@get2sammyb @joeblogs Honestly for me the Croft Mansion DLC was the best part of the sequel. It was a great mystery that really felt like I was solving fun puzzles.
Dont get the hate for rise to be fair. I really enjoyed it. It was a solid game and was absolutely beautiful.
Im a little concerned that if this is the finale of the trilogy, that crystal dynamics are not working on it to see out theor vision. Eidos montreal are great in their own right, but i would rather they started their own story, rather than finish someone elses.
Regarding the writing in tomb raider and ROTR, Rhianna Pratchett confirmed she wouldnt be working on the story for another tomb raider (i believe there were behind the scenes creative differences) so it will be intersting to see the impact this has
@Cassetticons Didn't get that far sadly, but I would like to go back one day time permitting and give it another chance. I feel like I should enjoy it. Just, ehh!
Oh well, interested to see Shadow tomorrow.
It'll be interesting to see some gameplay tomorrow. I enjoyed the reboot and Rise.
Loved the reboot but Rise is still part of my backlog.
I highly doubt that there'll be any wink wink exclusivity this time around considering how badly it went last time. Also, I preferred the original Tomb Raider to Rise, if I'm honest. When I saw the Rise reviews they were all talking about how much better it was writing wise and stuff and then I played it and I was absolutely bamboozled that people thought it had good writing.
Both games are really fun to play though. Fix the writing, and give Lara's voice actor a cup of coffee before she records, and we're golden.
But the best recent TR is clearly Anniversary.. no?!
Can’t say I’m too excited. Really disliked Rise, so Shadow will be bargain bin material.
To be honest, I enjoyed Rise but for the life of me I don't remember the plot that well. The gameplay outshone the story, sure, but it was a solid game. I think it would've been a worse game if the PS4 release was the bare-bones one the XBONE received. I hope Shadow hasn't any of that timed-exclusivity nonsense either. But I've enjoyed Tomb Raider games since the original on the PS1 so maybe I'm a little biased towards Lara's adventures. The perfect end to the origin trilogy would be best if she starts doing more tomb raiding... Puzzles, lost cities, treasures, and maybe less human opponents?
@Bluetrain7
So what if it was timed exclusive on PlayStation 4 ?
So does this mean we'll hear about Avengers on April 27th? 🤔😏
sigh
Meanwhile, I've yet to play any of these.
Time to get crackin'!
I enjoyed the reboot. Currently playing Rise and finding it a real slog.
I just hope this entry in the series is where Lara finally learns / uses acrobatic combat skills like in previous games from the PS1 & PS2 era, sprinting was missing in Tomb Raider 2013 and introduced in Rise so hopefully the rest of her skill set will follow in Shadow.
@YummyHappyPills except not because mass effect and crash and god of war exist
@Ralizah Hey, same here!
I'm still waiting for PS4 HDR support before I play Rise...
This is getting ridiculous.
Loved both games immensely, love the Metroid approach of going back to old places with new items. Bring it on!
I wonder if this is going to be episodic since Square Enix tends to like that business model.
@YummyHappyPills
what empire strikes back is the best sequel and the best of all the star wars films!
forget what i said didn't read all the posts
I enjoyed Rise Of The Tomb Raider more than the first reboot. Okay so the story was pap but I loved the large open hubs so I'm hoping the 3rd game will be similar.
Will be a definite pre-order!! Rise, for all the negativity I see (bitter about the timed exclusivity??) was easily my 2nd favourite game - had The Witcher 3 not released, it was head and shoulders above anything else. Story wasn't as good as the first BUT the game-play was superior. I can't wait for the follow up!
@YummyHappyPills Hey, I loved ATTACK OF THE CLONES! Still the sexiest Star Wars movie, IMHO. WHEW!!
And to add to @Kai_, there are plenty of other good 2's that have arguably been the apex of their respective trilogies...Turok 2, Fallout 2, Mario Party 2, Resident Evil 2, Call of Duty 2, Modern Warfare 2, Killzone 2...etc!
Let's see if Square Enix shaft the PS Gaming Community again?!
Nooooooooooooooo I wanted a remake of the Original Tomb Raider :-/ But hopefully the next game could be? I hope so + if it goes to Xbox first I will just get this 2nd hand off eBay one day when it's cheap
These new Tomb Raider games are much better, the older ones did nothing for me. So I'm quite excited for this.
@sinalefa lol, ditto....
I bought Rise not long after it was released for the PS4, started it to see what it was like, liked what I played but not returned to it since (still got the disc).....like soooo many other games I own. Oh the woes of 1st world problems: finding/making the time/desire to experience an illusion 😔🤔🤨🙃🤪😉
@Bonbonetti 😱😱😱.....you go and say sorry to Jesus...right now!!!
@smelly_jr I like Attack Of The Clones too, and the rest of the prequel trilogy. For me, they got better with each one. Loved watching Palpatine’s grand manipulations and his rise to power.
@jacobia Yes! It was super cool finding out about all the OG Trilogy characters.
@smelly_jr I’m sure that I’ve read/heard ages ago that George Lucas said that he wasn’t an actor’s director, more a scene director (or something like that), which I think is quite true, but Ian McDiarmid was an epic choice to play Palpatine.
The first one is great. I enjoyed a lot. But the second one is forgettable bland story with no mystery.
@BAMozzy
Had it as my Game of the Year 2015, best bow & arrow play until Horizon Zero Dawn showed up. And in fairness, Horizon is kind of built around the bows, RotTR had an assortment of guns that were also fun to use. I remember receiving some kind of hand cannon on day one for pre-ordering and while it was crazy over powered it was a hell of a lot of fun. Usually one or two shots could get you out of a sticky situation.
Anyway, I hope they stick to the same kind of template, the pseudo open world works fine, but Crystal Dynamics isn't developing it (or at least doesn't seem to have development lead) and I could see this going episodic as SE loves that these days. Hyped, but a bit uneasy at the same time.
I wonder if Square-Enix will be stupid and make another deal with MS.
@Gamer83 I do like the template of the reboots - more RPG like and the ability to upgrade skills, gear etc as well as the more open world nature does open up the game a lot more. I know that its kind of 'old school' where you need to unlock certain skills/gear to complete areas to 100%. The layout of this also opened it up for more replayability post completion - survival for example - much better than Tomb Raiders MP.
You would hope the Square Montreal would follow the same formula that Crystal Dynamics installed. This though is the supposed to be the last of the 'origins' trilogy and with both studios involved in Marvel projects, it could be a while before we see more of Lara. Just because its the last of the Origins though, doesn't mean they won't make more - but more likely an 'older', more experienced Lara. I hope they keep the more open world and RPG format though.
Its a pity that these games have released at the time they did - 2013 had Last of Us for example and 2015 gave us the Witcher 3 - as well as the controversial timed exclusivity but both are quality games and in different years/circumstances, maybe would of got more recognition.
I've enjoyed the origin TR story and games. I'd rank them in line with Uncharted, though not quite as polished in the storytelling, but in overall fun and adventure, Lara holds her own against Drake. But I am glad this will be the last origin game. The movies, including the new one, have all told her origin... kinda like Spider-man... wait! We can tell it better!
@jacobia Dear God! I don't understand how anyone can actually like the SW prequels. They are awful, some of the worst movies I've ever seen. They should be studied in film school: how NOT to make a movie. I hope Disney says they're not canon and remakes them.
I've only played the first reboot, still need to get around to playing Rise.
Regardless, I hope this release date turns out to be true, would guarantee the game being $25-$30 New during BF 2018 sales maybe...
SUPER HYPED!
@HeathenFriar yep, I know what you mean...but there’s no accounting for taste. All subjective opinions and experiences, and what not 👍
@jacobia Sorry, I'm an atheist
