Horizon: Zero Dawn was totally snubbed at the Game Awards at the end of last year, picking up no awards at all. It did earn the nickname 'Horizon: Zero Awards' for a while, but that's no longer true.
Guerrilla's action RPG was nominated in the majority of categories at this year's DICE Awards, and it's come away with two shiny trophies. It won the awards for Outstanding Achievement in Story and Outstanding Technical Achievement, which we fully agree with.
That's where the successes end for Sony exclusives, as the awards ceremony was largely swept up by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and other Nintendo titles. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice unsurprisingly picked up the award for Outstanding Achievement in Character, and the award for Role-Playing Game of the Year went to NieR: Automata, which is also well deserved.

To be honest, I think Horzion Zero Dawn, for me, had possibly the best story in an open world game I've played. I liked the characters and there was a central mystery which made me want to go on. I think it was up there with more narrative heavy games. So fair play on the win.
It still baffles me that PUBG is still winning awards.
No colon. You're meant to read it like "Zero Dark Thirty". Why won't people listen to me
I find most of these awards questionable but these two I thoroughly agree with. The game was a technical marvel and I was gripped right to the end with HZD's story and the way it was told.
I have this borrowed off my partner's dad but I am mopping up my Trophies for games I've completed. Just got plat for Batman TT series, Skyrim, Titanfall 2. Just finishing off Lego Marvel Avengers then moving on to this but I am considering in just buying the complete editon for myself via digital when it's cheaper. Only played about 30 mins of it and I can't wait to really get into it.
Looks like Cuphead and PUBG did well too for MS. H:ZD is still my Game of the Year and deserved far more awards than it appears to have received. At least it was recognised and nominated in so many categories. I wonder if its one of the most nominated games with the fewest 'wins'....
If we count all the GOTY awards, Horizon Zero Dawn is the second game with most awards released last year, that's way more important than anything related to the weak Game Awards.
That's huge for a new ip, especially in a year full of great games.
@SoulsBourne128 Exactly, an incomplete game on early access getting awards, that's a disrespect to many developers. These gaming journalists handling these awards can't complain about incomplete releases, lack of content, broken games, etc.
Agree with most of the winners, but Hellblade was robbed in the sound category.
Guerilla can be very proud of their achievement. They left their comfort zone and created nothing less than a masterpiece.
The fact that their new IP won Technical and Story proves the excellence in both aspects of the game.
Injustice 2's focus on presentation and the huge amount of content payed off. Every fighting game is different and personally I prefer the fighting of some other titles but you'll never hear me say that Injustice 2 didn't deserve this award because it's the best overall package on the market.
To those annoyed that Nintendo swept awards
Prob won’t happen again this year... thier releases are just a little weaker than 2017...
@JoeBlogs Even then I still felt like horizon was a better game than Zelda. These people just seem to have a weird fetish toward this game. Zelda for best sound? Something was up.
a lot of the winners would not have won if I was picking. HZD would have won more.
@BAMozzy CUPHEAD did nothing for MS they never made it same with PUBG they cannot take awards for doing jack.
@David187 well don’t expect Nintendo to be on much awards at least this year this time...
@David187 To be fair, they published the games and almost certainly played a role in the development of the Xbox versions. Cuphead especially they would have been quite involved with.
It's astounding that HZD didn't win more awards. Story, graphics, sound; the game is perfect in every way.
@Neolit How so? The dungeons were a downgrade, the story, somehow, was a downgrade, the combat was a downgrade, and the enemies were a downgrade. Rewards were mediocre, and it was plagued with technical issues. I don't understand why they turned weapons into glass and why they decided to make rain completely halt my progress for twenty minutes at a time. It was one of my least favorite Zelda games. Where's the ten?
Similarly to what happened with the Game Awards, there was a lot of PlayStation nominations, even though they didn’t win most of them. A lot of the categories had multiple PlayStation exclusives nominated.
(Man, I still need to play Hellblade...)
Pretty much spot on with the winners, though for the life of me I can't understand NieR not being nominated more, especially in the music category. HZD is an interesting one as it's an excellent game that does everything to a high level, deserving recognition, but without much in the way of innovation. As such it just doesn't elevate those high levels above other games that have engineered certain aspects that touch better.
@JoeBlogs I don't really care about who beat who, what I care about is that perfect score across the board for what I felt was a mediocre Zelda game. I was a Nintendo fan first, and so I should prove I have no bias.
I'm playing Horizon: Zero Dawn and I think this game is such a slog to play.
Looking as some of these winners and its clear the D.I.C.E. award are more of joke than the Game Awards lol
@David187 That's like saying Bloodborne or the upcoming Spider-Man did nothing for Sony as they are made by 3rd Party studio's rather than Sony's own - both Sony and MS just 'publishing' the games...
@Neolit my issue is when I see GT Sport & Forza back - back graphically while nice looking I’m like
Sigh...
Prob cus they’re simulation racers...
Mario Kart just sticks out
Now if a CTR Remake happens & that didn’t get racer of the year I’d feel like you there because it’s Crash Racing dangit
@Grim-Tuesday Trust me there’s no such thing as NO BIAS you’ll have a form of bias no matter how ya slice it...
@Derpie1 I think the issue with Mario kart winning is because it's just a port. It's not a new game.
NieR: Automata taking an award is cool too. But on topic, I'm happy to see Horizon: Zero Dawn win something. Finally getting around to playing The Frozen Wilds (which I had pre-ordered off PSN as soon as it was available) and it's awesome. One of the best expansions and a prime example of DLC done right just like the brilliant Witcher 3 expansions.
@Grim-Tuesday that's opinions for you, i'm leaning towards it being my fave Zelda game and probably my no.1 game of all time.
@toffeecrit Why?
@Grim-Tuesday I might give an in depth explanation later if you want when i've got more time, but for now because it's the best game i've ever played.
@Gamer83 Yeah, the DLC does some pretty neat stuff. I think I may like it even more than the base game.
@JoeBlogs Specially in 2014. HZD Would have gotten 12 awards easily.
@BAMozzy which is true From Software made the game & Insomniac are making Spiderman that is who I will congratulate if they win things.
I guess MS & Sony support is there so I understand where you are coming from just feel like the developer should get the praise.
@Derpie1 very true just did a google search.
@David187 And the Devs do!! My post was more about the article and how it stated that the awards were very positive for Nintendo and Sony's successes were not very widespread. Guerilla Games didn't appear to get much 'mention' as the devs of this game. The point I was making is that the awards were 'successful' for MS too - not just Nintendo. We ALL know the devs deserve the credit for actually making quality games.
@toffeecrit Persona 5 for me. Bloodborne probably as my all time favorite.
@Grim-Tuesday nice, I literally just picked up Persona 5 last week so i'm hopeful it lives up to the excellent stuff i've heard. Bloodborne is easily my No.1 PS4 game and deffo right up there in my all time faves.
Without going too in depth on Zelda no other game has given me the same sense of wonder, discovery and enjoyment. It's like being the ultimate flĂ neur at times. As an antithesis to some of your mentioned dislikes, I conversely loved the weapon break, and the dynamic rain and weather systems, as it made me think outside the 'open world' box in terms of combat and traversing the 'wild'. The physics engine and enviroment when combined with the 3 core powers is majestic, surprising and never gets boring, as through experimentation I am constantly doing, and seeing, new things, even a year later. Plenty of games have given me freedom but compared to BOTW in so many aspects it was like being in chains.
About time it was recognised.
@toffeecrit BOTW was not what I was looking for in a Zelda game. I imagined that I would find real dungeons out in the wild, find items to help traverse the world, and experience a real story with the announcement that it would feature voice acting. I found the dungeons to all be small and mediocre, the items weren't as valuable as the ball of chain, spinner, and the hookshots would have been, the enemy variety was too bland for this entry, and all the characters I would have cared about were all dead, with the exception being the gorons. They were cool. I don't know, everything just seemed pointless.
@Neolit bro come off it Zelda didn't do anything new besides the climb anything which ac has almost been doing for years now and having the stamina to manage while climbing which was new oh wait I forgot shadow of the colossus did that over a decade ago. Seriously though Botw had a crap story, crap "dungeons" and I say that being generous, crap npc's,crap voice acting, crap bosses, crap enemies and barely passable combat. I just can't overlook those flaws because it's Zelda and Nintendo who omg made such a big comeback from their colossus Wii U cock up.
@toffeecrit dude no game nowadays is innovative or new at least that I'm aware of. Would you care to share some with me
@Tsurii why laugh when horizon has a really good story
@Ryno different strokes for different folks just sad your taste are so "unique"
@BAMozzy to be fair Sony Japan did collaborate on bloodborne
@Gamer83 Yeah, The Frozen Wilds is outstanding. I would love another expansion but I'm sure their too busy making Horizon 2.
@Splat
I'd love some more DLC, hopefully whatever they're up to we learn about it soon. Horizon is easily my favorite new IP so any more of it is a very good thing.
It's about time Horizon won some awards but best story? Cuphead is fully deserving of it's praise too, however Zelda has to be the most overrated game I've ever played. Don't get me wrong it's good and some of it's mechanics are excellent but the world is largely empty with no substantial dungeons and the story almost non existent, not to mention it has possibly the worst season pass I've ever purchased.
Back to the positives, the combat in Horizon is second to none in it's genre and is constantly engaging and exciting, then you have the scenery on offer, a truly beautiful game. I didn't connect with many of it's characters but the history of it's world more than made up for it and kept me hooked to the end.
One of Nintendo's best games continues to sweep up the awards. Horizon did very well for a new I.P., though. I'll have to play it one of these days.
2017 was just a fantastic year for gaming all around if you ignore the Western third party scene.
nice, i think the DICE awards are one of the most reputable
